All GSL matches will NOT be airing on OGN.
Something is getting really effed up between Gretech, Kespa, OGN, Blizzard and MBC games...
Edit: The news page says something about the broadcast being cancelled due to 'internal reasons'
Edit2: I now have some time to translate.
안녕하세요 GSL입니다. Hello, this is GSL.
9월 4일 개막되는 2010 GSL StarCraft II Open 시즌1 케이블 TV 게임전문채널 온게임넷을 통해 The GSL SC2 Open starting September 4th was to be broadcasted on OGN, 방영될 예정이었으나 , 내부 사정으로 인하여 방영이 취소되었습니다. But due to internal reasons the plan was cancelled. 관련된 기사 등을 접하신 후 기대하셨던 시청자 여러분의 많은 양해 부탁드립니다. We ask your understanding for those who anticipated the broadcast after hearing the news. 이후 지속적인 조율을 통해 방송이 가능하도록 노력하겠습니다. We will continue to work towards broadcasting on OGN in the future if possible.
감사합니다. Thank you.
Also Korean replies speculate that Gretech gave licensing rights to OGN under the condition that OGN will air GSL. OGN complied, but by playing recorded matches, not live, and 12 at midnight. I guess both Gretech and OGN is now back at the table about it.
Further community speculation: http://gall.dcinside.com/list.php?id=starcraft&no=5685535&page=1&bbs=
-OGN and Gretech makes a deal for Starcraft1 license, and in return, OGN will air GSL.
-Kespa jumps in and stops OGN from airing GSL. Pisses off Gretech
-OGN can't go against Kespa with OSL final in few days. Kespa may pull the plugs on players.
-Gretech may nullify the SC1 license it gave to OGN due to broken deals, effectively making the league illegal along with MSL.
That's it so far. Will be updated as it progresses.

Too bad. That pretty much means almost nobody will see GSL matches :o

:O It was too good to be true...

FUCK! i hoped to watch the korean streams for free. Now hate rages wild in my heart towards gretech & blizzard.

I also posted this on the GSL stream thread, but since not everyone will read 80pages to see it I'm reposting it here:
It seems like GOM is listening to the community. I just received the following e-mail (I added bold for emphasis):
Dear our valued user, This is GOMtv.net Support Team. We’ve found you purchased Season Live ticket($19.95) via Paypal and we are sending this email to inform you very important issues. We are sorry to say this, however, we would like to let you know this information as soon as possible. As you know, we do not have free streaming service on GOMtv.net. Since our service has been opened to public, lots of e-sports fans have requested for the free streaming service. We’ve thought this issue over for the last few days and we’ve decided to release the free service for the users. Therefore, we will service 1 season premium ticket which includes VOD service and Premium Live service, and the price will be $19.95. With premium ticket, you can watch High Quality(500K) streaming live matches and VODs. Free service is the Standard Quality(below 250K) streaming live only, with no VODs. You can ask a refund if you are not happy with this new premium service. However, if you keep your purchase, we will reward you the premium ticket for 3 pre-seasons which is valid for all season in this year. Please reply to this email if you want to refund your VOD ticket before the first live broadcasting starts(at 7pm KST). Otherwise, we will consider that you keep your purchase and accept the premium service for 3 pre-seasons. Again, thank you for your purchase. Sincerely, GOMtv.net Support Team
It looks like still no free vods, but free LQ stream.

Well, I feel really bad for the foreigners who finally get to play in what was supposed to be a really nice professional tourney. Too bad I lost interest. Too much nonsense. Good business guys.
O, a free LQ stream is nice. Maybe I will watch after all. Still tastes bad.

Who ever would have thought Starcraft 2 would struggle so much in Korea of all places
|
We just need to hope none of the other good US / EU players disappear into the black hole of Korean eSport to keep the regular free tournaments high in their quality. Sad to lose TLO to it, but we already had our entertainment by him, lets hope someone can replace him on the innovation side of the game.
TheGunrun demonstrated the "premium quality" streaming this morning and it was not what I would expect from something called "premium". A resolution of 640*360 is less than the original BW reolution of 640*480 [yes, I know its different screen formats] and thats not really acceptable on the internet anymore. Technology advances and you need to keep up with it.
Doesnt GOM have someone to check the grammar in their "standard letters" for english? The one pasted by rasnj has quite a few errors ...
|
Wow, so there isn't much cooperation between Gretech and OGN after all, despite both being partially owned by CJ.
Guess it does lend credence to the "small company hanging on by a thread" image that Jukka(sp?) projects on these forums.
I was half hoping to see exactly what would have happened had the tournament proceeded with streams only available to those who paid and how small the audience would have been, but they listened...haha.

So 20$ for monthly hi res live stream and VODs... That seems like a reasonable price, though I still don't trust the streaming quality from Korea to Europe, but at least you get access to hi-res VODs.
Great move by GOMTV (I guess whining on the internet persistently can achieve results)

I'm still laughing (crying) inside that they think 250kbps is "standard" and 500kbps is "HQ."
Do they not realize random amateurs are streaming at 1000kbps or better? That HQ is more like 1500kbps? MLGs was 1600kbps, iirc. Even just 800kbps is miles ahead of 500kbps in clarity.
Ridiculous.
|
Well I'm a happy customer, I bought the stream for 20 dollars and got the VOD's ontop of that price now :D [edit] and all 3 seasons for that 20 dollars! I'm so happy ^_^
But damn all that whining... I hope I never have to witness teamliquid in that state ever again.

Wow this is bad... reallllly bad... :/
Can we get a translation please? Google translate suggests there's a bit more to it than just "all GSL matches":
Hi, is GSL. 4 September 2010 GSL StarCraft II Open Season is opening a cable TV game through professional channels Ongamenet But it will be broadcast, broadcasting has been canceled due to an internal matter. After jeophasin related articles, and viewers expect a lot of folks appreciate your patience hasyeotdeon. After sustained efforts coordinated through the broadcast will be available. Thank you.
Google translate is terrible, of course, but seems like we still need a proper translation.

Probably due to the proleague issues, well hopefully it'll sort itself out .

Yeah, not the greatest tbh. But because of the distance a lot of people can't get above ~250kbps anyways.

Ridiculous. Well it looked like the bandwidth check was mislabeled, it said Kbps when it was actually measuring KBps. It may be that the 500Kpbs stream is actually 500KBps = 4Mbps which would be extremely good quality. We will find out soon enough.
Edit: Never mind, samples are up and it's just 500k. And the bw check seems to have been fixed.

Does the topic mean For Koreans, they can attend the GSL live or they can watch it with via internet (afaik gomtv is only internet, or am I wrong there?) and not on a normal TV channel (like OGN would've been)?
|
hmm... interesting... better than nothing!
|
I wonder what is happening behind the scenes. Probably Kespa threatened that they wont allow the players to participate in the OSL, if they working together with Gretech. Anyway for now we can just speculate. I hope that we will get some clarification soon.
|
I am going to buy the service now that they offer a free stream, just to support the fact that they listen to the community.
Still sad that its not going to be on OGN.
|
Hmm so this is a good thing I believe, but it does not really save the GSL for me. If all I get for free are livestreams in KST I can now choose between either
a) too little sleep b) no sleep at all/freaked out teachers and bad grades because I leave my courses at "random" times
I would not even stay up until 4:00 AM or something for a Fantasy vs Jaedong OSL finals, not even if I knew how amazing it would be in advance. I'd much rather search hours upon hours on the internet for some extremely low quality VOD of a re-restream with tons of ads and messed up sounds, possibly filmed with a mobilephone.
So - any chance something like the above depicted will be available for people like me? I really don't like to think I am going to miss this event because of the crappy timezones... Also I assume this does apply to most other Europeans and people from NA, too. Sounds like the overall GSL audience is going to be quite manageable...

Much better @ $20. Though I would support an optional micro transaction model for VODs.

$20 for everything is a good price. Like this plan a lot better. Yeah I agree, 20 $ for vods and livestream isn´t as crazy as 30 for vods without stream. Also I could get the 500 kb/s. If that offer is true I might consider buying one.

Bah, not good at all. Thought this whole thing was on it's way to being resolved:\

Most peoples' connections to the server aren't bad; I think they could do a 750k or 1000k stream. I'd definitely pay for that.

Yeah, definitely ... the manly thing to do is to obediently and silently eat up any outrageously overpriced crap any SC2 related business might come up with. /sarcasm
By raising a shitstorm, the community gave the only appropriate response.

It looks like still no free vods, but free LQ stream. i really appreciated your post here. thank you.
i think their business model is flawed. the matches are likely to be aired/streamed live when its 5:00AM in North America. Basically due to time zone difference, it is hard for them to accommodate all viewers. i think they are better off offering free (but limited) VOD but charge for the live stream. besides, live stream is expensive on bandwidth because you pay extra for congestion.
|
20 bukcs :D i sold :D but hopefully things gonna get better with all that e-sport blizz kespa .

I am starting to think if this 'listening to the community' is real or is just a marketing strategy: Greetech: "We want to sell live stream and vods for 20$. Let's tell the community we want much more(50$), they will complained and then we will 'listen to the community' and reduce the charge. The community will accept the offer and will pay! They will pay for low quality stream!".
|
$20 for BOTH HQ stream AND VODs is much more reasonable pricing. Too bad they remove the VODs after a limited time though, if active subscribers could always access the VOD archives that would entice people to keep paying $20/month for the access.
It sucks that what they consider HQ is only 500kbps and pretty weak. What does that translate to anyways, 480x360?
|
$20 for the good stuff, and a free, albeit lq stream, this is pretty much a best case solution.
|
stop talking about gom pricing. This thread is about OGN not broadcasting.

So disappointing
Instead of collaborating and profiting (GSL broadcasted on OGN, Proleague goes on) they decide to keep shitting on each other.
I actually feel bad for Blizzard. They had to sign with Gretech because KeSPA was throwing tantrums, now Gretech tries to get their revenge on KeSPA and struggles for power, but in the end it only makes it worse for both SC1 and SC2
|
was gonna watch this on OGN, i'm not going to pay to watch poor quality streams...gonna have to sit this one out. i'it's ridiculous thinking that somehow a 500kbps stream is considered HQ and worth the $20 to watch it.

I doubt it becouse many people could only hear about they 50$ offer, and not get the updated information later on. They also had not updated they site yet.

My solution to this problem:
- Have the Free Low-Quality stream (500kbps) air LIVE. - Have a second airing of the Free Low-Quality stream during the evening in North America.
- Charge a ONE time fee ($20.00 USD) for the High-Quality stream and VODs PER season. - This gives you access to High-Quality streams at both airing times, as well as to the VODs and any extra content that my arise.
- One-Two months after the season ends, offer HD VODs (ALL of them) to the public for a price of $10.00 USD
---------------------------------------------------------------------
On a side note, I would like to point out to all of you, that $20 for an ENTIRE season is pocket change compared to the price of that of a regular season Hockey or Baseball game (depending on your seats and what team of course). You are usually happy to shell out that money just for a few hours of fun, that you cannot relive (unless you brought a video camera yourself).
GOMtv charges $20 now (reportedly) for an ENTIRE season, as well as VODs so you can relive all of your favorite games. So to be honest, you have nothing to complain about other than the airing times, and that's understandable considering their main audience is probably in Korea (not to mention its easier on all the staff and players to produce something like this when they are regularly awake : ))
|
20$ for stream+VODs seems reasonable. I think they should do it like the NFL (Gamepass HD Europe) and charge whatever they deem appropriate per season and allow full access to the entire VOD archive as long as you have an active subscription
I'm more than willing to pay the 20$ because that's how the quality of the stream will get better and how good casters will be signed long term. Can't really complain about how "expensive" this is and at the same time want esports to become more mainstream
I think it would make sense to also offer some package that reairs the games (not live) during good US and/or Euro times and allows access to the VODs
|
How to mess up what is probably the highest competitive tournament so far...
So sad...
|
Most of you are focusing on the fact that GSL is now more accessible to foreign fans.
But if it's not televised in South Korea, the majority of the potential audience for this tournament has disappeared, greatly reducing the value of this tournament to sponsors. I'm now really curious (and probably will never found out) exactly what was stipulated in the contract between OGN and Gretech, since apparently OGN can back out of televising this tournament.
|
Durn it...
But can someone who knows Korean please translate that?
From my terrible Google Translate skills, it seems like there might be still be aired matches in the future...
|
Just updated with the translation.

I...I just...wow. What a total mess. Seems like every institution involved in e-sports is laboring as hard as they can to destroy it.

Yea, whatever emerges from the flames is going to be a broken mess. It's a sad state esports business has evolved into.

So KeSPA is fine with proleague, MSL and OSL all ending this season.... just so they can punish Gretech for trying to operate a SC2 league....
|
fucking kespa.. Interfered in ogn and goms dealings again.
Tehy are really gonna fight tooth and nail for sc2 to never be on the same stage as bw.
So in summary,
Gom; hey guys we own bw now. In exchange for the rights to play bw on tv how abt u air our sc2 league on ur channel as well? Mbc: maybe... [a bit later] actually nawwwww. Ogn: well, we dont like the idea of being forced to play ur content. But its our 10 yr anniversary, fuckit ok. Were going to shanghai! Yeeeeeeeeee Kespa: if u air sc2 we are gonna ban ur tourney and pull the players. Ogn: something came up, my dogs sick, gotta bail. Gom: fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
naw really. Politics is so retarded. Blizz gretech should of just given bw away so they could actually get sc2 running.

Nah it's a response to Gretech refusing to sign off on Proleague. They're going to do this until pretty much Gretech decides to let KeSPA do proleague.
it's quite petty but whatever

This will get ugly, but this also might open up the door to something better in the long run... maybe.

This majorly sucks for this tournament in Korea. More fighting between Gom/Blizzard and Kespa is -__-.

More like Kespa is killing SC2 to keep BW alive.
But yeah, if rumors are true, this is evil puppetry by Kespa pulling the players. I don't think they will because it would essential cut off their balls in the process.

Uh..... no. BW is pretty much dead from all of this drama at this point anyway, but KeSPA isn't "killing SC2" to keep "BW Alive". If it weren't for all of this drama BW would still be going strong. SC2 can't really compete with BW at this point in stage, but hey, Gretech did the damage they wanted right?

Yeah we did, gretech's side was the first news post

Okay... well then the two sides are saying different things. KeSPA claims that they offered to pay fees for Proleague to go on, but GOM refused. GOM claims that they can't let proleague go on, without being reimbursed for it, and KeSPA refused to pay. So... contradicting statements again. I'm not going to take a side, but either way this is a shitty situation.

Well they finally lowered the ticket price for Live HQ + HQ Vods to 19.95 for both, instead of the original 49.90. Twenty dollars to watch nearly 100 pro-level matches is more than worth it to me, but having to pay TWICE for Live and VODs was just absurd. Some of the live games I can actually be awake for but for the most part I will be watching VODs only. Definitely a good move on the pricing change, but still kinda sucks we can't get VOD support for free (or I should say legally, because someone could always re-stream it).
I really hope they don't cripple Brood War, it has easily two to three more years in it at a pro-level, destroying that potential just so the infant SC2 pro-scene can start to grow. Don't misunderstand me on purpose thought I want SC2 to go big, but I want BW too - there is no reason both cannot co-exist for a while yet (except of course for corporate greed/power hunger).

Actually those statements don't contradict. KeSPA did not agree to reimburse GOM for any prior pro-leagues that were held, instead KeSPA offered to pay broadcasting fees for any future games. As far as GOM is concerned that is not good enough, they want payment for the previous proleagues that have been happening for some time.

ghaa so much politics! why cant we just have both games peacfully coexisting together?
or better yet, use bw as a tool to promote sc2 - rather than shut down bw to force ppl to move over.........
i wonder what the players have to say about all this bullshit

Do they not realize random amateurs are streaming at 1000kbps or better? That HQ is more like 1500kbps? MLGs was 1600kbps, iirc. Even just 800kbps is miles ahead of 500kbps in clarity.
Ridiculous. Do YOU not realize they have to stream to tens of thousands of users?

Still it is kinda strange, before Gretech it was Blizzard and they had the same problems. On top of that Kespa seems to be the only identity that seems to be having problems. All the other leagues and cups have had no problem of any kind when running their SC1/SC2 tournaments.

KeSPA is not killing SC2. They're just not investing into it, why would they? Are they obliged to or some shit?
On the other hand, Gretech actively tries to to kill BW.

Sounds awesome theyre going to be streaming at all even at low qual. Bandwith isn't free or cheap you know.
And in business sense it only makes sense that kespa wants sc2 to not be successful

Kespa's way of 'not promoting' SC2 is not letting SC2 be promoted. Forbidding all teams to play SC2 and having doing anything to do with SC2 is pretty pro-active to me.
|
this all seems pointless to me OSL finals are soon. then whats left for kespa to regulate? OSL/MSL/proleague can't operate without a gretech deal. is kespa going to postpone all 3 leagues until after they try to win the court case? BW will die in that time and in that time SC2 will be the only thing to watch. unless OSL renegotiate a deal after the finals are over.

i wonder if this is why we are getting a free lq stream now.. since there will be no free ogn stream ?

yeah because as you all know we are all heartless pricks that dont like it when a company listens to its fans complaints.

just want to say that gretech uses very modern codecs and its own filters whatever, and partically p2p technology as well. also they pull VFR. i mean their live 650kbs is better than 650kbs most of u imagine. it is very advanced 650kbs.
at least their 900kbs garimto tournament live stream was reeaaaaly good. so don't really blame the quality before u even see it.
at least this is the case for gomtv.com.

At this point, I think it's fair to say both sides are actively trying to kill each other. [sarcasm] Isn't it lovely? [/sarcasm]

i agree, this is very much a power struggle the problem is KeSPA has much more on the line in the form of a successful business KeSPA really only has pull with the TV stations GOM has the whole SCBW and SC2 franchise's in its hands and really dosnt have very far to fall
|
Wouldn't an SCII broadcast on a television network (in high quality, at a time when people are actually watching) pretty much kill BW?
-it looks much better than BW, -has mechanics that are very similar to BW, so spectators who haven't played SCII will know what's going on, -has improved controls, so it looks more exciting than BW, even if the the SCII players don't have the technical skill of BW pros.
If you believe this, then KeSPA can't afford to allow televised SCII broadcasts...
