General Rules The latest official Patch version will be used throughout the Event. Players may not appear on a Station with sponsor insignia that is not approved by MLG or conflicts with MLG sponsors. Players may be asked to wear MLG apparel for all Matches. In the case of a Computer/Monitor malfunction, the Game will be restarted from the beginning. No Warm-Up Games may be played outside of scheduled Warm-Up periods. During scheduled Warm-Up periods the winner can stay, but the loser must get up. During scheduled Warm-Up periods, Players who haven’t been eliminated from the Event have priority over other Players regarding the use of open Stations. Players who break General Rules #4-6 may be given a Foul (See Pro Circuit Conduct Rules). If a Game is started without the approval of a Referee it will be restarted. If a Player fails to report to their Station within 5 minutes of the announcement, they will Forfeit the 1st Game. 10 minutes after the announcement, a Player will Forfeit their Match. If both Players Forfeit their Match, the higher seeded Player will win the Match. Players may be disqualified if they leave their Station without their Referee’s permission, or are otherwise unable to play. Referees may set a time limit for a Player who has requested that they be allowed to leave their Station, however, Referees may also deny a Player’s request to leave their Station. Players may be disqualified if they haven’t returned by the end of the Referee’s set time limit. In order to dispute Game results, Players must notify their Referee that they would like to Protest the Game. In order to dispute Match results, Players must notify their Referee that they would like to Protest the Match. Players must notify their Referee of their intent to Protest a Game before a new Game has begun. Players must notify their Referee of their intent to Protest a Match before the Match’s Score Sheet has been submitted to the Tournament Director.
Gameplay No Pausing a Game without Referee’s permission. If an issue arises that requires a Pause, Players should contact their Referee immediately. Referees may approve or deny a Player’s request to Pause the Game. Pausing a Game without Referee’s permission will result in a Warning. If a Player receives a 2nd Warning they will Forfeit their current Game (See Gameplay Rule #17). Players may not look at an opposing Player’s Monitor or projected screen. Players may not chat in-game unless they are engaging in pre-game sportsmanship or surrendering the Game. Players must disable Toast Notifications in the Battle.net options. Players must set their status to Busy. Breaking any of Gameplay Rules #2-5 will result in a Forfeit of the Game. Any sign of cheating may result in a Forfeit of the Game, disqualification from the Event, and ejection from the venue. The Map for Game 1 of each Match will be selected by MLG and announced prior to the Event. Prior to the start of a Best of 3 Game Match and the Blind Pick of Races, each Player may select one Map, from the list of Maps, that can’t be chosen for Games 2-3. The lower seeded Player will be given the opportunity to select a Map first. The higher seeded Player will then be given the opportunity to select a Map. The loser of a Game must select the Map for the next Game. No Map may be played more than once in the same Best of 3 Game Match, Best of 7 Game Match, or in the Finals. Referees will conduct a Blind Pick of Races for Game 1 of a Match. The loser of a Game may select a different Race for the next Game. Players who quit out of a Game before it has ended, without Referee’s permission, will lose the Game. Players who are disqualified prior to the start of a Game will not be allowed to play in the Game. Players who are disqualified during a Game must quit out of the Game. Players who are disqualified won’t receive any Rank Points for their ranking in the Event. The higher seeded Player must host all Games in a Match. However, if a Match is broadcast, an observer will host all Games in the Match. Only MLG Staff members may connect to the server as an observer. Inviting someone to observe a Match without Referee’s permission will result in a Warning. If a Player receives a 2nd Warning they will Forfeit their current Game (See Gameplay Rule #2). If a Player loses their connection to the Host during a Game, the Game must be replayed. If an observer loses their connection to the Game, but both Players remain in the Game, the Game must continue. The higher seeded Player must play as the Red team and the lower seeded Player must play as the Blue team. If all Minerals on the Map have been consumed and no Units or Structures have been killed for 5 minutes, the Game will be replayed.

Nice player list, there's some big names on there :-)
|
Great to see, with that said Go SLush!
|
Definitely getting the HD stream for this :-)
|
I have a question-- on the first news post about this, it said that if you were wearing a certain MLG shirt from Hot Topic (yikes), you could get in for free. How does that work, do I need to register anyway if I have the (cheaper than a ticket) shirt?
EDIT: ALSO, the spectator pass link is broken. Double edit: it's fixed, awesome.
|
Holy crap, Silver's gonna be there. Impressive.
|
:o
Day9, JP, HD and Husky! I hope i get to meet them
edit: also, it looks like kulas has been swapped out for xel'naga caverns

This applies to spectator attendence only. Doesn't get you in for the competition. If you have the shirt, just show up!
|
Also I'm going to be there. Hehe. It's going to be freaking epic!
(Will write more in a bit when I get a look at everything.)
Edit: Is Tyler NonY?!
|
Is ThisIsJim on your player list supposed to be ThisIsJimmy?
|
If i cant go(most likely cant ) ill watch streams!
goodluck to all
|
Yeah, that is ThisIsJimmy, he likely just had to shorten his name for MLG's site to register. =P
|
When they say that day9, jp, hd, and husky are all commentators does that mean at once? Or maybe something like each duo takes a game each? I am not really too familiar with how MLG works. Hopefully is isn't 4 people at once trying to commentate the same game >.<
|
looks like a very competitive group. Should be a sweet tourny to watch. i cant wait . looking foward to seeing the brackets.

We'll be rotating them thru.

Presumably this allows for GL HF, And GG (WP)?

Yeah i think that's exactly what it means. To stop some retard from spamming chat everytime he has a spare moment to screw up the vision of his opponent.
|
Really great players attending, but isn't it this date when there is like 3 big tournaments?
|
There's some qxc guy on there, think I've heard of him. Silver, too, hope he does well - was fighting impressively against Huk and IdrA and came across really really well in interviews.

Group Stage Matches will take place August 29th-30th.
I guess the finals for MLG is on Sunday the 29th, how QXC, Silver, ThisIsJimmy and HuK will balance this, no clue :D

GO HUK. I can't wait for this.

I can't believe TeknoBoy isn't bolded, this is a travesty.

Can't wait to meet some of you guys, I'm competing at the WoW tournament there!
Also nice to see two wow players competing, nadagast and masq
|
I'm calling it now: xxjondxx is going to take this thing all the way.
This event looks like it's shaping up really well! Happy and impressed with the way MLG has handled things so far and responded to feedback.
|
I think LAN experience is going to play a big role.. previous bw players who has been to alot of big tournies should be able to perform well here.
Nony and Machine should have an upperhand, Purely skillwise without outside factors? HuK, qxc and Slush probably..
Going to be intresting!
|
Wait what is this: "Referees will conduct a Blind Pick of Races for Game 1 of a Match."
The referees pick which race the players will play? .___.
Also the 5 minutes after all minerals are mined rule seems pretty poorly thought out, nothing is said about inaccessible minerals, or a player simply leaving 50 in a patch to drag out some ridiculous situation. The rule should probably be something like: "5 minutes without either player mining any thing or any structures/units being killed results in a rematch" Not that it's terribly likely of course.
|
Hope it's a big success!
Maybe in the future you guys can take the lead and support community made maps that facilitate more exciting and balanced play than some of the blizzard ones right now.
|
super pumped for this, gonna be freaking sweet

This has been asked 50,000 times in the previous threads -_-
It means that each player will tell the refs their race before they join so they can't choose it based on what their opponent has picked.

Oh, because they are allowing race picking, that's unfortunate. However it will take more than a couple of dirty race pickers to ruin a nice tournament like this!

Great players and great casters... EPIC EPIC EPIC! Wish I could be there... =/
|
For a long time I was not a fan of MLG, but now...............................................
|
|
I've been working at MLG for a long long time and this is by FAR the most excited I've ever been for an event.
Going to be EPIC.
And guys, that HD pass is a double-edged sword of awesome. Firstly, you get some ridiculously gorgeous true HD streaming to your PC. Secondly, sales of the passes are pretty much our main source of funding for future SC2 competitions. Your sales go directly towards bigger and better events in the future.
<3 TL, looking forward to meeting a bunch of you in person at Raleigh as well, Cheers!

We are looking forward to a great broadcast with an amazing cast. You will see the familiar match commentating duos of HD &Husky, as well as Day9 &JP, alternating match commentary and live interviews with players, video features and much more. You guys asked for it and we have worked hard to deliver an amazing player list and an amazing cast of commentators. Thanks to all you guys here at Team Liquid for your advice and suggestions, see you in Raleigh!

A strong list of players. That's more like it MLG! The tourney should be fun to watch, hopefully Nony can practice enough to dominate it.

Halo events are usually uploaded the day after the event I think, vods split game by game; they do good work.
I'm gonna get the HD pass and I hope lots of TLers do, this is gonna kick ass :D

Very, very stoked about this. Been working on SC2 for MLG Pro Circuit for almost 18months now.
Hope everyone enjoys the stream.

This is gonna be a pretty epic tournament. If I didn't have to drive 9 hours and skip three classes I would be there in an instant to watch. MLG Columbus the last two years has been sick, and they didn't even have a game of this caliber on the circuit. Fuck. I might end up going anyway... who knows.
Either way I'm really really looking forward to this.
EDIT: How is the spectator setup going to be? Will it be like Halo/WoW's section where you really can't get anywhere close or will it be similar to Tekken/SSBB?
|
|
This is super super exciting. i love the new rules and the extended player list. This is just amazing. I cant wait to watch the live stream its going to be siiiick

Meh, your loss. I'd go for the bigger prizepool where you're guaranteed moneys if I were you.
Plus, didn't IEM announce first by like 2 weeks?
MLG should've checked schedules to make sure there wasn't a conflict. Why should an event change their dates because of that kind of incompetence?

So what does this mean exactly for the Dallas portion of the circuit? I'd love to go to Raleigh but it's not exactly a quick or cheap trip
On the other hand, I live in Dallas! I don't really see much info on the MLG site about what the Dallas portion of the circuit is going to be like. Will there still be Starcraft 2? I've never really followed MLG so I'm not sure how the circuit works.
EDIT: It says on MLG's website: "Culminates in National Championship in Dallas, November 5-7" So MLG SC2 Championships will be in Dallas I guess?

It's interesting that you talk about 'incompetence' while displaying your own inability to understand the very thing you're whining about. No, MLG should not have "checked schedules," because their events aren't dedicated entirely to SC2. There are several other games on the MLG pro circuit, and the MLG event schedule was planned and the venues reserved long before SC2 came out (even long before Phase 2 of the Beta started). If you had bothered yourself to do even the least amount of investigation before jumping to conclusions, you probably wouldn't sound so ignorant in this post.
It's great to see how many changes MLG staff put into effect after listening to the community's opinions, though. Can't wait for the event, and I'll definitely be watching in HD.

blind pick of races? this leaves room for randomness and "luck of the draw". imo not good for tournament play nor the development of sc2... agree/disagree?

Could we please add an annotation clarifying this rule.
Thank you,
Our collective sanity.
P.S. Blind Pick = Players inform the referee prior to the match of the race they will be playing. This makes it so that a player can't change their race to counter their opponents choice.

I'm surprised SjoW's coming. Sure he can do well, maybe win, but the trip itself is going to be so expensive.

Not worth to fly from Korea. And i'm not sure is he doing some other tournament at the same time. Might be GSL.

Headsets must utilize a standard 3.5mm stereo headset jack with a separate 3.5mm microphone jack. Players may not use USB headsets. Mice and keyboards must utilize standard USB interfaces. Players may not use PS2 interface equipment.
Why? A lot of rules seem unnecessarily strict. Why do colors have to be red/blue?

Has anyone experienced the HD channel at MLG thus far? Personally, I already purchased it at $10 its value to entertainment ratio has gotta be high but I'm just curious about those that have already used it before?

Firstly, interesting choice to have 65 players.
Secondly, for those who don't know, MLG will be pounding your face with games all weekend. On the WoW circuit they would broacast EVERY GAME for about 8 hours straight, hardly any gaps.
So hyped for this MLG is something to watch and enjoy guys.

Can someone confirm that the MLG HD stream is available outside of the US?

Also, is there any way that there can be an alternate HD stream implementation other than through Octoshape? It's a common curse around here with Roadrunner internet that we get decent (>10mbps) download but shitty upload, so using Octoshape renders the internet nearly useless for all my roommates due to its p2p nature (google pings start averaging ~1000ms). It would be nice if there were some livestream-like HD source >_>
But then again, I suppose it won't affect me in particular too much, since I plan to attend in person!

HD Feeds are available anywhere, so yes, outside of the US, you can get the HD feed. I was watching it on an iPhone during some testing once. As someone else mentioned, we use Octoshape to deliver our streams.
There's also a 1hr rewind function, which is always on. So if you tune in at 10pm, you can rewind an hour and watch the 9pm matches, even if you weren't tuned in at 9pm. Octoshape handles that end for us.
Also, player list fixed here on TL. Should be fixed on MLGpro.com shortly.

I use it for instant replay all the time, but you can rewind for up to an hour to watch an entire match.

By the way... @TL Community. Thanks for all the feedback and for keeping it constructive. It's been very useful in our deliberations. MLG knows how to run tournaments. It's probably one of the most successful organizer in the world. But each game has its nuances, and we're very aware of that.
We'll be revisiting rules after Raleigh, but these rules are now locked in.

Ah, random thought. If I recall correctly, you guys use a special interface / server for WoW arena? Do you know if the "Blizzard professional-only LAN-thing" that was mentioned in Q&A before with Blizzard making its first appearance anytime soon? I'd imagine it'd be at an MLG event if such a thing actually existed.

Good list. Go ROOT gaming!

Lee, what's the story on VOD's? Will player-view VOD's *and* live stream VOD's be made available after the tournament? Or just the stream? Will all of what was streamed be available post-tournament? Seems to vary by game, so I'm curious how you guys are approaching SC2 in this regard.
Thanks! Sooo looking forward to this.

IEM has a prizepool nearly twice as big for NA than MLG's.
MLG has more than SC2, the SC2 portion of course it is bigger for IEM, but the overall picture MLG is a bigger weekend. If i was able to travel to one of these and compete I would pick MLG since they have been doing this circuit for years without a lot of hiccups.

In the past for their other games they have posted rebroadcast and POV games after the event.

For the most part, yes. But for Halo at least, the broadcast streams (i.e., what is seen online) from Saturday/Sunday morning/early afternoon are *not* posted after the event. Ideally, everything that was streamed online plus the player POV videos would be made available.

It varies by game because our ability to record matches (aka replays) varies by title. it's hard enough getting high quality (aka HD ready) signal from each title (alot easier when you're just capturing it from your desktop, but try switching it live with motion graphics, keys, and audio)... sorry, rambling :D
For SC2 in particular, we'll be making available (in roughly this order, with no promises on timeframe, post production can take a while): -VODs of every broadcast match -VODs of every match played (with commentary featuring HD, Husky, Day9 and JP, assuming they have time) -the Raw sc2replay files.

There's no LAN mode to SC2 if that's what you're asking. That was a rumor. I think the QA you're referring to is a matchmaking GUI for tournament administration, which afaik, hasn't been released to anyone yet. Unlikely that would ever be public facing if we used it, so you'd probably never see it :D
|
Thanks for the response, Lee -- good to know you guys are trying to get everything online after the tournament :-)
Another question: how exactly are y'all going to address the 'no LAN mode in SC2' issue? Will folks be authenticating to a Blizzard-blessed server in the venue, for example?

Indeed go. You can always get like 100 free DR.Pepper bottles and sell them to get your 25 dollar back.

Yup, just be a little patient on the delay to get it up on VOD. We have to process hundreds of hours of video footage (and conversion) after each event.
RE: no LAN mode. Yep. That's how it'll happen. Same way every event has to deal with it.

when they say top 16, do they mean top 16 from the winners bracket ? or top 16 over all with wins?

This is great and all and I really do applaud MLG for keeping in touch with the community and supporting E-sports as a whole but...
4 commentators for 1 event seems too much, I don't want any commentators to hold back their emotions because they have to let the other guys talk.

IIRC, it's going to be 2 casters at a time only, with D9/JP and HD/H alternating.

Top 16 in placement at the event, which is determined by winners bracket, not by wins.

Those players don't have to compete at MLG. If you would rather keep your builds "secret", and miss out on a good amount of money, thats your choice.
If you are a pro player, and want to be the best, it should not matter what the other person knows/does, you should adapt your game-play to beat them. That's what the best always do.

I was just wondering why there weren't any thread about this in the tournament section.

Can't wait to watch these games. Should be epic. I'm so glad they expanded the players' list to include some of the top players instead of just a first-come-first-serve basis. Nice work MLG!

In the game rules it states
Players may not change the in-game video settings to Ultra.
Why is that? I would assume the GFX cards could handle it.
It would be odd if you are used to playing on ultra, then find out you can't.

Show nested quote +# Referees will conduct a Blind Pick of Races for Game 1 of a Match. # The loser of a Game may select a different Race for the next Game is that normal in tournaments? The first one is normal, yeah. It just means that you can't change your race based on what your opponent picks. It really doesn't come into play much because most people play only one race. So if you have any knowledge of your opponent, you are 99.99% certain of what your opponent will pick, but it doesn't matter since you aren't going to change based on his pick anyway.
Changing race game to game is kinda weird but it happens. I know it used to happen in OSL (OSL is the most prestigious StarCraft: Brood War league) because Grrrr... did it in a finals. But this is so rare because most people play only one race.
On August 15 2010 03:16 troynt wrote:In the game rules it states Why is that? I would assume the GFX cards could handle it. It would be odd if you are used to playing on ultra, then find out you can't. More stability on lower settings. Avoiding broken computers is one of the biggest necessities of a smooth event. I don't even know what the differences are between high and ultra. They aren't huge. But any serious player that plays on ultra could change to high and have plenty of time to get used to high. So if the MLG tech guys think their computers will be better off avoiding ultra, and if the refs think that this will have virtually no effect on the players, then it's a good rule.
|
@Liquid`Tyler thx for clarifying, for some reason I read it as Refs picking a random race for you. Blind pick makes sense.
|
Yeah they really should explain that rule on the official page. Sounds really awkward as just "blind pick of races".
|
I'm really pumped to watch the streams of this event! It's very cool to see how seriously the field of e-sports is exploding in response to the release of StarCraft 2. Almost every time that I log onto TL.net, it seems like there is some major news about tournaments and the community, which is very exciting to be a part of, even if the majority of us are only watching. Blizzard and TL.net have really gone balls-to-the-wall (pardon me), especially in the recent weeks, and it truly has created a whirlwind (ineffective against Rock and Ground Pokemon) of excitement.
I've also been really impressed with the way that MLG has responded to community criticism, shaping Raleigh, and hopefully all of the MLG events in the future, into must-see events. The tournament roster for Raleigh is pretty sick, and while I don't have a huge preference as to who will win, I hope that either NonY (to keep the excitement going for TLAF-Liquid', of course) or one of the many strong Zerg players (Sheth, Slush, or Machine) will win. If that happened, maybe some of the "Terran is horribly imbalanced" threads will disappear, not that I necessarily disagree with them. Way to go MLG, and keep up the great work!
|
Players may not change the in-game video settings to Ultra. This is due to a bug on Ultra setting where you are unable to sometimes see the red dot from a Nuke.
|
Actually more looking forward to playing without lag and not dc'ing every other game
|
I'm counting on you, Tyler, to win this. That would make me soooo happy.

Was where you can see the games casted. http://www.mlgpro.com/content/link/307596/Columbus They only have WoW for their PC circuit rebroadcasts as of now, but once Raleigh starts, they should have the complete SC2 rebroadcast under the Raleigh tab.
Pretty much any type of video-content you want of the event, they will provide...free. Unless you want to pay 10$ for a HD stream during the event, but the SD quality is free.

I'm still curious about how one would go about getting a press pass? I sent Lee a PM and an e-mail after some direction from JP, but still haven't heard anything back. I realize you guys must be fully swamped at this point with the event only a week and a half away, but I'd still like to know ahead of time if a press pass is going to be possible. A simple "no way" would be fine even, since it will give me a realistic expectation for what I can and can't do during the weekend. Let me know if/when you get a chance!

How would you get a draw? Terran loses slightly but lifts off a CC to a corner when the other guy has no air army left? or I guess the only armies left can't kill turrets/cannons/spine crawlers??

At first I thought that this was an open event and that a bunch of random no-name players would be playing, but I am very pleasantly surprised to see that players list, and I assumed that MLG would pull some big name casters.

Referees may approve or deny a Player’s request to Pause the Game. Pausing a Game without Referee’s permission will result in a Warning. If a Player receives a 2nd Warning they will Forfeit their current Game (See Gameplay Rule #17).
I have a mouse that sometimes freezes and requires me to divert my attention to fix it it's a very infrequent problem but if something along this line occurs the player would have to either look away and try and fix it and hope nothing important happens or stop doing anything to call a ref for permission to pause :/ It's not a super uncommon issue for a mouse to mess up on occasion either idk there are rules about a computer or monitor malfunction but theres also random keyboard issues in sc2 where it won't respond and said mouse issues.

Not trying to be confrontational but why don't you get a new mouse? If I were your opponent, I wouldn't mind you pausing if you had a freak mouse issue, but you KNOW that your mouse does so occasionally and yet you still use it?
However, I do agree that having to summon a ref over to pause is ridiculous. A rule that punishes a pause without reason AFTER the fact would make sense, but as all gamers know there are pressing issues that require pause.

What ocedic said.
You should use the same rule that Kespa uses in Korean Broodwar matches. If you have some problems, you tell it to the chat by (pause,pp, etc) and then the tournament Referee pauses the game. Then you start fixing your problem. Its ridiculous to 'summon' the referee to ask pause.
Imagine a somekind of fight. Player1 loses control of his mouse for example and he needs to summon the ref to get to the player and tell what is happening. It'll be too late to do anything by then.

It's an $80 mouse that I got for free for helping someone with a contest but because of the transactions that occured it's hard to get warranty to exchange it. There is a valid warranty but in order to file it I need to have the order number as well as the serial number. The Serial # is fine but since the organizer received the mouse as a prize to give away there is no order number so red tape is a pain in the ass. I have tried on two occasions to exchange it but get told without an order number I cannot. So now I have an excellent mouse with a bit of a flaw that is under warranty and I cannot currently afford to replace it.

im possibly even more excited about the casters than the player pool lol, day9, husky and HD riffing off eachother should be great.

Like the mix between well-known players and guys I have never heard about. New blood is a good thing.

i will fight my urge to bash MLG and call them out for what they really are and just say im very excited to see the games and commentaries from this......hopefully we will have better finals than the IEM IMO the dimaga vs tarson games were way better than the finals.....sad but true.

I just hope the bracket is even, random seeding with a bunch of unknowns is kinda scary just because of the possibility of getting all the good players playing each other first :p
|
I just hope we see some Protoss representation this time.
|
I don't understand why chatting is still banned now that kespa doesn't control tourneys.

Keep in mind the 32 not-well known people have not been accounted for race-wise.

I'm so excited to see this. I live in Raleigh, so I definitely am quite lucky!
Day[9], Tyler, if you guys want to go out after the games, let me know, I know all the best places to hang out in Raleigh, even if you don't want to drink. But if you do, I can get you guys out into the female scene.
