I'm always curious about where the top players stand. There have been great 3rd party ways to do this (e.g. starcraftrankings.com) but I've discovered a fairly reliable method to see the top diamond ladders in game.

As you probably know, all users have access to all other user's profiles, unlike at the early stages of the beta. To find the top ladders:

1. Go to your match history
2. Go to your most recent loss
3. Go to the person's profile who defeated you
loopstart:
4. Look at his ladder
5. Select the 1st ranking person in this ladder
6. Go to that person's match history
7. Select his most recent loss
jump loopstart

This consistently gives you views of the top ladders. In the second stage of the beta, I found the ladder with IdrA, WhiteRa and lots of other big names in it. From here (and this might bother some people) you can even see the custom games that the person has participated in. For example, Idra did a best of 7 against WhiteRa as practice games and even played a little BattleCraft .

This poses an interesting problem: if we know 2 players are scheduled to play in a tournament, then we can see the RESULTS of their play before the official results are released unless the games are cast live (assuming they use their main IDs to play). I think this issue is at least interesting enough to bring to everyone's attention. Feel free to discuss!

Here are a couple of examples I just did:

That's nice there is a way but we have to admit that it's really really stupid and unintuitive, when it doesn't have to be.

Personally I do not like the idea of getting this info from someone you have not even played. Mods should get rid of this thread before the whole world is just mirroring what their favorite player is doing and no one has any secrets

Hogie, I think it's a mistake to say that this thread would be at fault. If there are in fact negative issues with the current ladder system, teamliquid is a good way to discuss them and bring them to Blizzard's attention if need be.

Besides, this thread doesn't enable anyone to see other people's profiles, everyone can already do that. I'm just pointing out a reliable way of finding the best players.

Personally, I wish the ladder rankings were more open while maybe the match history was more private.

Is there any real reason for the divisions though? Personally I'd rather want to know I'm #2352 world rather than #10 in division #178 :/

Edit: That being said, excellent way, though I'd be way to lazy to use it

This system makes more sense when you are not top 1 in diamond division, it makes your goals seem more obtainable. However, I think once you reach number 1 in diamond, you should be re-ranked against all diamond divisions.

The real reason, as stated by Blizzard, is to make the casual player feel better about himself and makes him feel like he's progressing when he rises from #20 to #19, instead of #4944 to #4943. Yes, it's another ploy to keep casual players playing. They're trying to bring in the Farmville crowd.

Pro league solves this. If you're in the Pro league then you'll have a single ranking. If you're not, you're not good enough yet to need a single ranking.

I'm not a big fan of the division system myself. I really think it needs some work. For the most part, I don't really care what I'm ranked in my division, I want to know my overall standing. Being ranked 3rd or whatever in my plat division doesn't really mean a whole lot to me. Yes, I feels good to be near the top in a division, but what does it really mean?

I think what would make sense is for the lower divisions to be broken up as they are now.

Bronze - Gold Divisions of 100 people each
Platinum - Divisions of 1000 people each
Diamond - One division period. All diamond players are in the same division. Players are dropped from the division after a month of inactivity to keep only active players in the rankings.

I think this would allow more casual players to get that feeling of accomplishment of being ranked high in their divisions, but the more competitive players will get a better indication of where they rank overall..

Another thing I would also like to see is an integrated tournament system. Would love to see it support up to 64 players per tournament. Have options for both Group placement and Bracket placement, and best of 3-5-7 options etc. I think the scheduling side if it would be difficult to work out though, since playing a tournament with random people could make it hard to play a game at your scheduled time, or your scheduled opponent and you may have different schedules. But I think it would be a lot of fun to play in Bnet tournaments, in a setup like that.
yup, I'm a nub.
