Yeah, but if you do it only for that reason (to look good to the community) is that really any better than any of the others.

Teamliquid forgets nothing you know? It's a bit like Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather. Being nice, or even doing a favor pays for you. Probably not today and probably not tomorrow. But TL wont forget you can be sure of that.

I can't believe that after all of this you're really surprised at the outcome.

I was one of the first 5 that opted out, and I gotta say that I'm glad none of you got keys. Not one of the remaining contestants seemed to care at all about each other. The arguement I heard time and again was "I really really want this blah blah".
You guys say this like the rest of us don't want it. I want a beta key. A lot. But I understood that SOMEONE getting a key was better than no one getting a key, so I opted out ASAP, without a moment's hesitation. Throughout the last 48 hours I saw many follow suit.
The later that this went on, the greedier you guys became. The later the contest went, the more impact your opting out had. I hope none of those left in the contest at the deadline get a key. Especially those with >500 posts.
Give the keys to FA or Day[9] or kenningit or riptide (etc.), and let them hand pick who deserve to win. There are far more deserving then those left in this contest. (IE those who didn't self nominate in the first place).
PS, what's the opposite of altruist? Is it nihilist?

Not surprising how we lost. But how many BETA keys were there???

Dear List Members,
Stop sending me PMs. If your name was opted out, you either missed a deadline or you chose to opt out. It doesn't even make sense to try to get on the list because
1) the contest is over 2) even if it was not over, adding your name to the list means everyone is more likely to fail 3) there is no use to add your name to a list of people who did not receive anything
There is no benefit to being on the list anymore.
Thanks.

I wonder how many people opted themselves in, when there are a limited amount of keys being given out and that there are people more deserving than them out there. I wonder if those same people are trying to act superior to those who are doing the same thing in this contest.

Well I tend to disagree with your choices of who to hand them out, but I know there were plenty of people nominated (excluding the self-nominators) in that earlier thread that didn't get keys. TL staff could give some more out to them.
I wouldn't oppose another contest to lose at, though.

My pattern of thought was similar. Opted out not because of face saving (i took part in original competition, only for fun, with very low/nil expectations for winning, and after seeing this was taken too seriously, didnt bother to 'game on' ), but because you guys could actually have a shot at those keys.
But speaking of greed, i disagree, not that most were greedy, just most didnt care that much about overall chance of winning keys. From the 'player' point of view, they didn't actually 'play' the game, they just drifted along the line.

1) It's been pointed out several dozen times already that Hot Bid has already said this is NOT the case. 2) If there were 50 keys, the people who stayed opted-in would have won.

[Smug, sanctimonious, one-upmanship] Of course there are some keyless people who nominated other people instead of themselves in the first place, so don't pat yourself on the back TOO hard... [/smugness]
PS, what's the opposite of altruist? Is it nihilist? Nope. Nihilists believe in nothing. Egotist or individualist might be closer, but doesn't quite have the same connotations.

can you please explain where are you getting these numbers from? Oo Initial competition did say they had 10 keys to distribute, however, with this thread, that couldnt be true, because there were still people who got nominated by others. so there should be less than 10. However, Hot bid denies the answer This is over, so whats the point in hiding the number. (Unless... the number was wicked and evil, like 1 or 2 keys rofl)

The first 50 out may be more selfless than the other 101, but on paper are far more selfish than everyone who doesn't have a beta key but didn't self nominate but saw the chance to.
