Day9 makes a big deal about not assuming the string is homogeneous, but he then assumes in his solution that it is isotropic. An inhomogeneous string does seem a bit more likely than an anisotropic one, but it's still an assumption not covered by the set boundaries of the problem, which was kind of the point he was harping on. Allow me to elucidate my quandary: Your string burns from end to end in 1 hour. This we know, however, if the string is not isotropic, perhaps the left half of the string burns slowly from left to right, but quickly from right to left, while the right half of the string burns quickly from left to right, but slowly from right to left. The string burns in an hour in either direction, but lighting both ends it burns for more than half an hour. You're going uphill both ways: burning the left half the hard way - from the left, and the right half the hard way - from the right. (I still love you Day[J]) /geek

Take an average (lets say homogeneous, just to be easy) string, and put it in a bowl, such that each end is at an opposite lip of the bowl, and the center is in the bottom of the bowl. As we all know, things burn more quickly up than they do down. If I light this string on the right side, it burns down to the center in, say, 45 minutes, and then back up to the left side in 15 minutes, for a total of one hour. If I light the left side, it burns down to the center in 45 minutes, and then back up to the right side in 15 minutes. Therefor, if I light both sides, each burns down to the center in 45 minutes. I don't think it's possible to solve this riddle without assuming at least one of isotropy or homogeneity.

Pre-release: People complain how nobody uses reapers. Mass reaper vs zerg strategy appears few weeks and is the most terrifying thing ever. Day9 PvT macro oriented daily: People trash it, think day9 is stupid. Few weeks later tip-top diamond players try to sneak an expansion even in PvP where all people did was 4 gate. What about 1gate FE build going around? Now people nuts said reaper is completely useless unit and yet again people find the ways to make it work ![]()

Yeah, that's a one off then. I have a reaper opening but it only works against gateway only builds.

I'll bet you are but your secret is safe with me. I bet one of your practice partners is tristan too. I do see a few consistent people you play against. Highly doubt it is him. For one it would be higher rated probably (then again he says he ladders with whacky stuff and isn't afraid to lose so maybe not). But the main thing is, he has posts on TL and mentions Day[9] as his favorite caster "because he seems to know the most" and I highly doubt that Day[9] would say that about himself. Also I don't think that he would say on his profile "my code is XXX, who wants to be friends? " because Day[9] probably doesn't have a lot of free time lol.http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=145303¤tpage=2#35

But I would bet my money on "SpaceMarineManfred". He talks a lot about him on the stream. That's why he obviously can't resist to name his smurf after him. ![]()
