She just won the 2009 World Figure Skating Championship, held in LA, by obliterating the field and shatterring the existing new world record.
Figure Skaters must skate two routines: a "Short Program" where the skaters must perform a set list of moves, and a "Free Skate" which is longer than the Short Program and offers the skaters more freedom.
Since the International Skating Union adopted a new scoring system in 2004, no female skater has ever broken 200 total points... until yesterday. Kim Yuna now holds the world record for short program, free skate, and total score. Basically, she is the dominant female figure skater today.
I admit I know little about figure skating, (sometimes I'm not even sure it's a sport) but I'm man enough to admit that whenever she performs, I'll be watching.
Don't be shy all you closet figure staking fiends... reveal yourself!
There's a lot of spinning in skating. I was spun around one and a half rotations yesterday, and I felt mildly dizzy afterwards. How do they get used to that shit. ;p

Yeah I agree, what the hell? There's no way I could even stand up after being spun round at that speed, yet she skates off into a triple salko or whatever the hell that was.
I've always liked yuna kim. I knew she was a really good skater but I didn't know she was capable of setting a world record... But, I only liked her because she is pretty and she did the nobody dance during a skating performance.
I've watched her perform on TV here a few times now and she's such a beautiful skater - she has a real depth of feeling on her face when she performs. I'm totally unsurprised about this news.

OMG WHAT THE HELL HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO BE HER AND BE SO BEAUTIFUL AND ADORED AND SO TALENTED AND SO LOVELY LEAVE HER ALONE SHE DESERVES TO BE WORSHIPPED OK?
So I linked this thread to a friend who does figure skating
hahahahahaah i like how half the comment posts are "omgsshhhh hawwt" .. miki ando has bigger boobs, the end
but yeepppp kim yuna's pretty epic, although she won this years worlds kinda shadily because she wasn't as good as the other skaters technically (ie, in terms of points from jumps, spins, step sequences) but won on the components scores (which are more subjective, scores on artistry and "choreography"). but the edge she rides out on out of her jumps are -perfection-, and she connected with the audience really well in this performance, which makes it a pretty epic gold-medal winning one.
i don't like her music this year -- it doesn't suit her as much as some of her old ones.
my favorite program of hers is actually from when she was jr level (she was -just- as good back then.. either a good thing or a bad thing, because she hasn't really improved, although she really doesn't need to !)
junior worlds 2006 SP [short program] (won gold here over mao asada, the best japanese skater who she still is 'rivals' with, and arguably the best technical womens skater -- asada has a triple axel, which is basically a man jump haha [3.5 revs])
her FS [free skate, also abbreviated LP for long program] from 2006 junior worlds is also good. 'lark ascending' which she used 06-07 was amazing, also. i think the lyrical style fits her much better than the brass-y/ethnic stuff she skates to now.. 'lark ascending' was "ethnic" i suppose, but not like 'miss saigon' which she skated to last year
my teacher made me skate to 'memoirs of a geisha' last year to suck up to the ancient white judges hahahaaha. i was like "durrrr...not japanese..."
skating is an annoying sport to follow (or fun to debate?) because it's really subjective. there are always 'favorites,' and despite the new code of points system (they don't use a 6.0 scale anymore), judges definitely inflate the points of those that they favor.. that was -definitely- the case for yuna, this year. hella politics in skating (a judge was bribed in salt lake '02, thus they changed the point system up to make it harder to rig)
i take back what i said before- yuna won in the technical marks, but only because the judges added HELLA 'grade of execution' (GOE) points [given for entering elements in a difficult way, or doing them exceptionally well.. see how it can be pretty biased?]. from the base value of points, she actually does LESS jumps than the rest of the skaters.
hahahaha you probably don't want to read all that. just c+p onto the teamliquid forums x)
So proud of her : ) I remember reading that at one point, she HATED skating and wanted to give up because of how it consumed her life but I'm glad her hard work has finally reached fruition... watching the medal ceremony and seeing her cry as the Korean national anthem started playing made me tear as well. <3 Huge props to her.
I'm not that much into this sport, so no jumping from my side (although undeniably she is a top-class skater). I just wanted to say Thank you to the topic starter and all those who contributed to this thread, as I learnt a lot and was able to impress a girl who is interested in figure skating. Without this topic, I wouldn't probably have even known there was a World Champs. You all have my thanks.

She's been on the wikipedia page for South Korea for quite a while.
You mean none of you read that before hand? Also, while on the subject of figure skating routines. This guy is actually incredibly good as well, obviously a exhibition performance.

also if your not a pro at ice skating (which i myself is not) its hard to find teh little details that give u extra points
Dear Korean-Americans, stop going crazy over sports you didn't care about until our nation got competitive. Thanks.
Seriously, korea's group mentality is like fucking hitler germany: One athlete or team places high in any sport and the entire fucking nation is behind them with crazy behavior. I know like 30 people adults and people my age that are telling me how great Kim Yuna is even though they don't follow figure skating at all. Same shit with World cup 02.

Our nation in general does that.
For an example, we didn't give a shit about badminton until Lee Yong Dae won Gold for Mixed Doubles.

It wouldn't even be bad if it was like normal national pride...Koreans are just fucking insane with the group shit. But yeah good example.

lol, although I'm not Korean, almost every country is like that. Sometimes it doesn't even relate to one's ethnicity. An example would be in the NHL, the San Jose Sharks started to get good around 2004/2005 and suddenly so many people in San Jose (and surrounding counties) jumped on the bandwagon and started to "like" hockey.

dude all nations do that. sure maybe korea maybe does it more, but did american's care at all about swimming till phelps started ownign shit?
and what do u mean group shit?
edit; ok c wht u meant by "group shit". thing is thou, if a person is winning in a sport that the nation was relatively weak or unknown in, y not support them? im not korean but am a huge fan and bandwagoner on her after worlds. its normal for national and regular non national fans to go crazy and cheer for their favorite athlete/team
o.O thats normal though, isn't it? i.e. korea isn't too good at many sports, sure they're skilled but they really don't have many athletes at all, so when someone does well, like really well, korea goes crazy to support them
Its not just that...I think the best example I can give is the 02 world cup. I know there countless more nations that love football more than S.Korea but if you looked at the audiences it was just retarded. And I'm talking about audiences outside the actual country too. You can argue that because it was held in Korea there would be more fans but even in places like the Staples center in LA, California people were filling up the stadium and I guarantee you the majority of them were just there because of bandwagoning. And then for the next 2 weeks at my community/church/newspapers in GA people who had no idea I even played football would come up to me to tell me about it.
Like all these years I try to talk about football to others my age and they ignore it, but when BE THE REDS shirts come out everyone and their brother wears it....lol what a joke.
We as a nation excel in golf/archery/skating/taekwondo etc...there's tons of sports we're good at and most koreans and korean-americans care about following. My complaint is that most Korean-Americans don't care about soccer/figure skating/greco-roman wrestling yet they go apeshit only during olympics when one of the koreans place or get close to placing.
sounds like more of a rant about bandwagoners than korea itself
anyway there's always gonna be people like that. i guess ill include myself as that since i didnt realize about her till worlds (thou if u watch livestreams of korean shows/sc events its hard not to c her)

Korea probably wouldn't care about golf/archery/skating/taekwondo etc, if they sucked at those events though... I guess it's just coincidence that they like those things and are good at those things too. This is how popularity for a sport emerges, you follow an idol, and she becomes the figurehead for that sport to become popular.
Golf = social status in korean culture. Taekwondo + Archery = Traditional heritage sports. Skating = Popular in korea as a pastime.
But your point is still valid...I just feel like with the above sports, korean people would still care and talk about it even if koreans weren't involved whereas with figure skating Koreans wouldn't really care about it if Yuna disappeared.
^ they didnt give a shit about figure skating before Yuna appeared so your point is proven i guess
but your post saying korean americans to shut the fuck up and stop pretending to follow sports that they didnt follow previously is overdoing it. seeing a korean doing well in something makes us proud, even if we know jack shit about what it actually is, and we cheer and go crazy over it. something wrong with that? + we liked soccer to begin with, we just went overboard in worldcup 02 because it was at home + it was the first time our team made it past RO32 (we made it to RO4 i believe)
edit: didnt see your post saying you were done sry
Well Korea was and is one of the great powers in speed skating (All their medals thus far are from speed skating). I think figure skating had to come one day.
Perhaps we can get hockey too. But that's just my wish (Miracle on Ice, baby).
BTW, Miracle on Ice was one of the greatest things I've ever seen. Such a historic upset.

Nobody gave a rat's nut about figure skating before Kim Yu-na the great. I'm a korean by the way. No, not a korean-american. A korean. The only reason I started even remotely caring about figure skating is because of her. This is how sports become popular.

Agreed, its perfectly natural that this happens (someone gets good, nation likes that someone, sport becomes popular). There's nothing wrong with this, it's completely fine and happens everywhere with every sport. I don't know what he's complaining about.

What's wrong with wanting to back up your nation and exhibiting some national pride in the Olympics?
I don't know shit about nearly any Olympic sport, but I feel good when a Korean wins a medal. Am I a lame bandwagoner because I feel proud that a fellow Korean excels at a highly competitive sport?
I'm glad that all the pressure of a whole nation's expectations didn't put her off (well so far). She's a true champion and more importantly she has the same birthday as me (September 5th).

Yupp. To give you an example, I'm Austrian, and as you might know (or morel likely not, because who gives a shit about Austria lol), Alpine skiing is the only thing we're any good at. And guess what discipline gets the highest viewer ratings in Austria? Nothing else is even a blip on the radar, and nobody cared about the summer Olympics.
Happens with any country, sports bring out our nationalistic pride. Not saying it can't go overboard, such as it does with hooligans and, from what I hear, a few isolated instances of Germany-hate after the defeat of Korea in the '02 World Cup, but within reasons it's far from a purely Korean phenomenon.
All that said, I live in Korea and the Yuna frenzy is infectious. I really like her from her interviews, she seems like a very level-headed and controlled young woman. I always get the impression from her that she is really good at blending out everything else and just focus on what she needs to do, which allows her to perform the way she does even with the ENORMOUS pressure she carries on her shoulders. Admirable qualities. I'm rooting for her.
Now let's just hope I don't have to eat my words if she falls on her ass on Thursday. XD
All this bandwagoning happens here in spain just as much and I actually understand Ack1027's feelings because if you look at it in a certain way it really makes not sense and it's actually quite annoying. But this is a pretty common thing to every nation so there's really no point in getting worked up by that.

Soooooo awesomeeeee!!! She did magnificent and her scores showed it with her shatterings of her old record(s). Definitely head and shoulders above EVERYONE and else. Kim Yuna HWAITING!!! <3

If I'm thinking of the right skater, the song was Prelude in C sharp minor by Rachmaninoff. I know the song from piano, but I've never heard the concert version that was played during her run. It was probably specially choreographed for her skate.

not just koreans are excited about her win... hes so excited he cant spell right
wow, im still shocked by how frigging good yuna was.... she crushed everything there is or has ever been in ladies figure skating. and i didnt even realize how much pressure was lying on her shoulders.
and what amazes me the most is that she still is only 19, so her only "maybe sort of weakspot", the charisma, will grow even more by the years. not to speak of the ease and certainty with which she performes her jumps, i guess she will show triple axels and quads in the future aswell...
228.... thats like flash reaching 2450 elo.....unbelievable. even though i was rooting for the european girls, she really made a fan tonight.

and the japanese girl was at 205 points, which is higher than what the world record had been only 1.5 years ago. with this performance, 1.5 years earlier, the japanese girl (damn, whats her name again XD") would have set a new world record, and now she gets owned by over 20 points... sooo sick.
Yuna practically lives 10 minutes away from where I live, knew this like a year ago but never really bothered lol, gotta live my own life too
She was magnificent tonight! I also thought Asada was ridiculously good as well, if it weren't for those itty bitty mistakes! Was cheering for both tonight, Kim and Asada - Glad my country won the gold but at the same time I really think Asada was just a hair short

It's because the ISU replaced the old 6.0 system back in 2004, so the records aren't really mature yet.

still it shows how much yuna has developed during the last 2 years. what the skaters show on the ice hasnt changed in 2004, its emerging relatively slowly over the years. 2 years ago asada was holding the world record at 199, under the same system that today gave yuna a score of 228.

From what I remember, they asked her what she thought of her making the sport even more popular in her home country, and she said that she was happy to have done it? I'm apparently really bad at short-term memory tonight, so someone else will probably correct me :p
She was definitely the Queen tonight. Despite the tremendous pressure on her (I know how much Korean media likes to hype a top athlete, and how badly the media trashes that same athlete if he/she fails to live up to expectations - most of the time, of course, 1st place or gold), she handled herself extremely well in both her short and free programs, what a performance, I'm only a mild fan of figure skating (hockey is my favourite winter olympics sport) but I'm the biggest fan of Yuna and tonight was a great night to be a Yuna fan.
Kudos to other women's performers too though, I thought the last 5 skaters of tonight's program all did a very good job.
Even the Japanese net folks agree who is the deserving champion, but there's lingering doubt (idk if it's justified or not, since I didn't watch a single second of figure skating) as to why the points are SO high.
Korean Netizens storm into the 2ch 801 forum thinking it's the "cheating forum". The 801 forum is the boyxboy / manxman love forum hahahahahah~~
(one of the ways to say cheating/rigging is 八百長, while 801 would be 八百一. )
Also, a Newspaper for Koreans living in Japan posts an article saying how "even 2chan netizens admit that Kim Yuna is the champion, even one poster says -wow they should give here 1000 points, she is so good!-". Writer is completely oblivious to the fact that the poster is making a backhanded comment at the unusually high points being awarded to Kim Yu-Na.
Some other forum in 2ch is chucking at said newspaper. (and the fact that a newspaper actually quoted 2chan)

ahahaha~ drama~. ^^
Seems like the Japanese are trying really hard to discredit her, but it seems like epic fail imo.

lol, srsly? If you look at all the other records she's broken it's not too big a surprise. Doesn't feel like drama to me.
she owned Vancouver Olympics...wow amazing...i didn't see any figure skating but i saw the points..20 pts higher than 2nd place girl...damn... it seems as everyone else was competing for Silver lol
Wow what a retard. Soccer is HUGE in Korea, from every little kid to adults, I assure you soccer is a big favorite.
So you think its weird that in their homelands, the nation cheering for their team especially when the team reached 4th place? Before 2002 world cup, Korea never even broke out of the group rounds and the country was STILL crazy about the Korean soccer team. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about
Ya but Yang took down the biggest name in all of sports.. Tiger Woods who has never lost a major that he lead. Ice skating is pretty popular in Korea, but bigger than golf? And Women's Golf is beyond big from what I see.
But yeah.. she (Kim) kicked ass. I was impressed. triple-triple perfect and with such grace. She blew everyone away.

I can assure you as a Korean living in Seoul... if Yang has 10k fans, Yuna prob has 10 million fans
Alright thnx for the insight. I just figured someone like Yang would be huge. Countries sure do love their women figure skaters and gymnists that's for sure!

In elementary schools, guess what most playground are shaped like? A soccer field with other monkey bar shit next to the field, with the great majority of the kids playing soccer whenever they could (especially at the one I attended, I think our entire class except one fat boy who didn't like it played every recess).
And yes, Korea is huge about cheering about their successful teams/players in particular. Look at Kim Yuna, lol (and this thread). And when a lot of koreans love a sport (soccer), and their players in their sport are doing really well, guess what they would do? Cheer, as they did in fifa. And it's not like Korea is alone in cheering on their successful players; look at America + Michael Phelps, look at how NBC did nonstop coverage on Apolo Ohno and whatnot this olympics, etc.
Rough summary: On 2ch (large Japanese forum) there were some people not speaking glowingly of Kim Yuna after she won gold. As a result, some Koreans decided to DoS 2ch as an independence anniversary.
Feels like a high-tech version of an elementary school catfight, hah.

Err sports fanaticism in general is frightening to me.
It always made me laugh in that a country is TOTALLY behind "their" players as if they really had anything at all to do with how good they are. Hell, Kim Yuna is in freaking Canada.

man just let them have it. shes an awesome skater and no reason for her country not support her 100% its liek if an american spent most of his life in america. he then decides to train in another country for coaching reasons. he got training in another country but hes still american. y not cheer for an athlete born in your country?
its not like the NFL in USA, where its bad for a fan to be a fan of whatever team is currently owning. bandwagoning is pretty bad, but in korea its more like "we are such a small country and don't have much exposure, so why don't we mass support and be proud of whoever or whatever team is owning at whatever sport."

Yuna's exit interview (in Korean) after the medal ceremony. I don't trust myself to do an accurate translation, so perhaps someone else can do it? Going to miss seeing her on the ice
I'm on board with the rigged voting. Way too shady for my liking. Would like to see a rescoring with a new panel, or maybe even a second go. Yuna wasn't the only skater robbed. Everyone else suffers from a falsely judged competition.

Translation from beginning of Yuna's interview, 59 seconds into the video:
Reporter 1 (right): This was your second Olympics. Vancouver and Sochi. How do you feel? Yuna: My bearing these tears... because of the scoring controversy... people may be misunderstanding... just ... I am relieved that this is over. I think that's the reason for the tears
Reporter 1: Thank you. After your free skate [and learning the results], I was wondering how you would respond. You weren't smiling brightly. But you weren't crying either. How did you feel? Yuna: Well, I am also kind of curious. I don't think I had a specific thought... just that it's over. Just relieved. I think that's all.
Reporter 2 (left): So far, you have received unfair scoring. It must make you angry, right? Yuna: (Smiles) Fans around me show anger for me. I am just satisfied it's over. (Sniffles) ...
Today when I was watching your programs on TV, I thought my heart was going to burst. I know that the music to your free skate program, “Adios Nonino”, is originally a tribute for a father and because of this people asked me how I felt as they felt like this program could’ve been a tribute to me during your last program ever.
But I did not hear anything. I could not feel anything. The only thing that came to my vision were the detailed moments of the rise and falls in your movements. My feelings when watching your competitions over the past seventeen years were the same as when I was watching your last competition; it was difficult to watch.
10 days before, when you left for Sochi I did not tell you “Bring home a gold medal”. Instead I only told you to do your very best. Because it was your last competition, I told you to show everything that you wished to do, to pour every fiber of your being into this endeavor, and to not let your supporters down. I told you that the Olympic Gold Medal is something that only the heavens gift you with and that if you did your very best wouldn’t the proper results follow?
Even as I said those words to you, in my heart I had a wish for a gold medal. That is because more than anyone in this world I know of your incredible skill and work ethic. A couple days before, I dreamt that I had won a game and collected all of the money from my friends. After I awoke, I thought to myself that the money in the dream could signify another gold medal and my wish for your 2nd gold medal grew bigger.
However, during the competition I saw an earlier competitor’s, Adelina Sotnikova’s, score and thought that it would be very difficult to overcome this mark. After Vancouver four years ago, because of the scoring system changes I knew that unless you received extra points it would be very difficult for you to get the winning score.
Our Yuna was last to skate in the competition and how nervous you must have been! What would happen if our Yuna makes mistakes? As I awaited for your turn my lips turned dry and my heart felt like it was going to rip apart.
At that moment, the 17 years and 7 months that I have spent with figure skating flashed before my very eyes. Do you remember? The times of countless tears and hardships…I then fervently prayed that in this very situation you would unfold and perform everything that you wanted to perform and leave this stage happy regardless of the result. I sincerely wished for my dear daughter , just as always, to humbly accept reality, to not make excuses, to not complain, to not argue, and to not blame others.
In your last competitive stage you didn’t falter even once. Even with that score, you accepted it, kept the tears back, and smiled. The moment I saw your smile was the happiest moment of our entire journey with figure skating from when you were only six years old to now. I thought that even in adverse conditions you did your best. You didn’t cling onto the results and gave a self satisfying performance. You confidently faced reality and moved forward. I am so thankful that you were able to smile for me like that.
Our loving Yuna, standing here now and looking back at these 17 years and 7 months the countless moments of triumphs and disappointments are coming to mind. The joys were but only fleeting moments while adversity was continuous. When we first started figure skating, our family could not even imagine that you would eventually win an Olympic gold medal. We could not forsee the incredible hardships of figure skating but sacrificed everything while slowly taking things one step at a time, ending here at this point in our lives.
When you competed at international events and received scores that did not reflect great judgment, as your father I was very sorry. I once told you, long ago, that I was sorry that I was not able to give birth to you in a more powerful country known for its figure skating might. Even here, in Korea, without a proper skating rink you trained hard while getting injured over and over again. And every time I sent you off to international competitions while knowing that you were so injured, my heart was deeply troubled.
Despite all of this, you never lost a medal even once in any of the events in your competitive career. Without adversity there are no results, injuries are the evidence of hard work. Once you set a goal, don’t even bat an eyelash and solely focus on the road ahead to run towards your goal. With all this, I am so proud of everything that you have done.
Dear Yuna, you can rest now to your heart’s content. You won an Olympic Gold Medal, you’ve received so much love from so many people, and you’ve even blazed a trail for future Korean skaters. Now, let us return back to being normal people from being celebrities. As your father, I wish that like normal people you will be able to enjoy common, everyday happiness while living a normal life.
Now since we have so much time, let’s ignore the public eye and go out to eat delicious things. Let’s go out to cafes and drink coffee while chatting endlessly. Let us allow for you new dreams to blossom. As your father, I will do everything in my power and will to help you in your new journey.
As soon as your program finished early this morning, I texted to you “Yuna~ You are the real champion” to which you replied “Thanks, I’m fine”.
No my sweet Yuna, thank YOU for boldly overcoming everything in the face of adversity. A job well done. For all these years you have gone through so much. I am incredibly proud of our great Yuna.
Sorry for the continuous bumping Just getting it out of my system....
Apparently, Yuna has been skating with a 1.5cm fracture in her right foot. Since her left leg has had to compensate, she's been experiencing periodic paralysis (?) in her left leg. On a lot of painkillers to get through her skating.

Doesn't say paralysis but a lot of swelling. The other stuff you're saying is right though. It's fairly common knowledge in korea that kim yuna has a lot of health issues now because of her skating career and she's even more revered for it. I forget what other problems/diseases she has but it's safe to say that it wasn't just a fracture she has been dealing with. There were reportedly other health issues that will continually affect her throughout her life
