Haaland with another hattrick (despite missing two penalties) - meaning he has 12 goals in 6 qualification games so far, and 51 goals in 46 matches for Norway, and Antonio Nusa continues to look absolutely amazing for us. Didn't even have Ødegaard as he was out with injury, but the top 4 with Haaland, Nusa, Sørloth and Bobb is genuinely one of the best in Europe. Defensively our players aren't great individually, but they're decent enough, and nicely gelled as a team. Now to beat Estonia (at home) in a month and then we're going to the WC for the first time in 1998. If we get there without any big injury blows (Haaland, Ødegaard and Berge are irreplacable for us), we're a legit dark horse.

I know a lot of individuality and creativity has been killed in Europe by academies in favour of team, discipline and following instructions - but I always thought Brazil still has this free-flowing spirit with athleticism... | ||

I am talking about the "other" Brazilians: Lucio, Gilberto Silva, Ze Roberto, Maicon, Adriano... None of them have been world class their whole career but at their peak they definitely were. Brazil isn't producing those sort of players anymore | ||

and aside from the performance level vini doesnt really strike me as a brazilian player in that classic sense. he seems to be a far more typical modern product of the game. maybe cunha gives me that old vibe a bit | ||

I think before his stupid "I am upset I did not win Ballon d'Or" Vini was definitely world class but since then his form has dropped so much. He isn't even a sure starter at Real anymore. But like I said if Vini had more of a work ethic like CR7 and less of a temper he could have been great for years. Like on a just below Messi/ CR7 level. Just like Neymar... | ||

It’s better to have 11 8/10 players than a few 10/10s and some 6s. It’s really only England and France that don’t have that issue, and even they have minor headaches. According to Tim Vickery, part of the problem is that Brazilian domestic football operates in such a manner that it’s not conducive to producing elite midfielders, or specifically ball-players. Teams have destroyers and most of the magic is left to wide forward/10 types. This was less of a big deal when they also produced great full backs and centre forwards, but that pipeline is a bit more dry too. I mean the 2002 World Cup-winning side didn’t have an incredible midfield, but they had Cafu and Carlos as probably the two best attacking full backs in the world, they had Ronaldinho, they had Rivaldo, they had Ronaldo. Nowadays they possibly have a better midfield actually, but it’s not one that holds up versus a Spain, or a few other top sides. The problem becomes a problem when areas of historic strength no longer are. There’s probably some obvious person I’m forgetting, but I was racking my brain for a bit. I don’t think Brazil have produced a genuinely world class centre forward since Adriano. A player whose peak at Parma and initially with Inter I followed weekly as a teenager. I’m 36 next week! And it’s unrealistic to have full backs of the level of Cafu and Roberto Carlos every generation, but it doesn’t feel even close right now | ||
