Someone has to explain to me why Tuchel didnt sub sooner and why they thought its a great idea to give Argentina the ball after the goal and do nothing at all! This was 100000% deserved.

Tuchel is a coward and completely misdiagnosed the entire match and what was needed from him.

might be an unpopular opinion but i think tuchel maybe didnt shit the bed as much as people think.

after englands goal the same 11 failed to get any control of the game for at least 15 minutes before tuchels first sub.

as a utd fan id blame tuchel for not playing mainoo at all and only relying on rice/anderson, a pairing i thought wasnt good enough for this tournament.

but if we assume tuchel was never going to sub mainoo on no matter what, maybe his assessment after the next 15 minutes from englands goal was that england just didnt have the legs in midfield to get a 2nd.

still a massive risk to try and park the bus for 20 minutes, but if for 15 minutes youve just watched the same 11 that got you the goal completely fail to control the game again, then you could consider it pragmatism to make the judgment call that your teams not gonna get a 2nd goal no matter the circumstances.

i dont know if anyone from england has come out and said they were specifically instructed to park the bus immediately after the goal, but i find it hard to believe tuchel would have done so. i think the players dropped deep themselves because they were getting dominated after argentina decided to chase for an equaliser and tuchel thought even with fresh legs in attack they were never going to beat argentinas midfield, so just hope dan burn and co. can clear all the danger away

the team decides to park the bus and the coach lets it happen is still kinda the coach's fault.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

Also the subs were way too late against the subs Argentina made to be more dominant, which worked well
It doesnt make much sense in hindsight, players like rice were finished way before 90 mins were up

yeah tuchel clearly hates mainoo and was never going to play him. but it seems that basically its only united fans criticising tuchel for not playing mainoo. everyone else doesnt seem to think mainoo would have been the solution.

so then i ask, what else could tuchel have done? theres not a single player in the england squad besides mainoo that tuchel could have put in to save that midfield. theres no point putting in rashford, saka, madueke, eze etc earlier because theyre never going to get the ball. rice/anderson/bellingham were getting completely smothered in midfield and just couldnt play out of their box at all.

so then from tuchels perspective, why risk opening up the game and exposing yourself when your midfield is never going to play out of argentinas pressure? maybe using your physically dominant defenders and hoping to shut argentina out is the better decision.

obviously in hindsight it didnt work and everyone will kill tuchel for it, but personally i can see why he made the subs he did. england were getting absolutely dominated in midfield with their "best" midfield combination after the goal. nothing was saving that midfield if youre not going to give mainoo a chance.

also the fact that tuchel let the goal scoring eleven continue to play another 15 mins before the sub makes me want to give him the benefit of the doubt. it seemed like he waited to see whether they can compete like they did the first 60 minutes before making the judgment call that they couldnt

Tuchel is way too smart for this.
My guess is, he saw how England couldn't control anything after the goal anymore. He saw the players were scared and in their own heads. He then made a decision to double down on "scared" play instead of going against his players, trying to get at least some counterattack play online

We won the battle against Messi in the first half.
Spence and Anderson largely kept him quiet.

Then Tuchel decides to concede the exact ground that Messi occupies to Argentina, giving him 5 seconds on the ball every time to measure perfect cross after perfect cross.

The fucking German twat couldn't have lost us that game more effectively if he was trying to lose the game.

if youre saying messi was the sole reason you lost, well can you really blame tuchel? its not the first time a team has lost because of messi's godlike brilliance.

to be fair, with a cb combination of guehi, stones and burns, youd be pretty heavily favoured to clear all the crosses that come into the box. messis 2nd assist was literally inch perfect. messi has shown for 20 years now that you cant coach against him. the shape of your team is irrelevant, because hed find a way like he always does. the only real way to stop him is to reduce argentina's time on the ball, which england were clearly incapable of doing after their goal.

england were mentally and physically drained and so tuchel reacted with the less risk, high probability play of packing the box with big defenders. englands 1st goal was a lapse in concentration and maybe a lack of legs. 10 men parking the bus but no one out to press fernandes quick enough to block the shot isnt tuchels fault. and messis inch perfect cross that goes perfectly above stones' head to martinez whos 15cm shorter isnt tuchels fault.

on another day with the same subs and same game plan england still win because 1 player is 1 second quicker to close fernandes and messi's cross is 10 cm off its trajectory. england came pretty close lol

anyways im only defending tuchel against criticisms that arent mainoo related. i legitimately think the only correct answer was bringing mainoo on for rice/bellingham/rogers, or even kane. you could also criticise tuchel for his overall squad selection if you wanted to go further back, because not having anyone to bring on in midfield besides mainoo, who youre not even gonna pick anyway, is pretty disgraceful.

this is some trump 4d chess logic haha
Time and time again Tuchel showed us that he isn't that smart and plays exactly like England did the last half an hour

Fabulous.

That isn't what I was saying though, is it?

I said we had Messi sorted. He was still dangerous because he's Messi, but we limited his influence, until exactly the moment Tuchel decided to abandon the space that Messi operates in. It was a series of bad choices on Tuchel's part that led to Messi being able to do his thing.

While I was clearly right about Colombia being good but not PT good, I’ll give it to you that tuchel made an absolute mess of himself yesterday! :D

Edit: I’ve seen the rest of the comments and I feel the need to note that I have not watched the full game as I’m travelling in Spain and the hotel lost power when the 2nd half started. There were a ton of English fans that were reaaaalllly sad when power went out but props to them, they kept partying pretty much until the game ended without watching a thing but knowing the scoreline.

well yeah i said earlier on in the tournament that anderson/rice would get england rolled against better teams didnt i? its why i laughed at andersons price tag. hes a solid dm, but hes no world beater or someone who can carry a midfield, let alone a whole team, yet he got sold for prime pogba prices.

and england didnt lose control of the game (or messi) when tuchel made those changes. you lost control of the game literally when argentina kicked off after your goal. that was 15 minutes before tuchel made any changes at all. so no, it wasnt tuchel that magically let messi start doing his thing. you were already getting bombarded by crosses and shots for 15 minutes before tuchel decided maybe he should add some more players to deal with all the balls coming into the box

This. I know people have a hardon for hating Tuchel but it is very much not his fault when the players cede control to Argentina after scoring. It is not very likely that they were instructed to do that. Anderson has been phenomenal all torunament as well.
Still, the doubling down on the bus was close to admitting defeat prematurely.

I understand the Anti-Tuchel sentiment in the moment because obviously you guys are devestated.
But objectivley seen, losing the semifinal by a slim margin is pretty big success. And I guess 80% of the Englishmen would have signed that before the start of the cup. You got carried by Kane and Belli until they broke down under the pressure. The end

If you go by results, yes it was a big success but it was messy and they lost against he first real opponent in the top 10 of the world....while looking shaky against good but not top teams like norway, mexico and damn DR kongo.

With a bit less luck England is out against norway and peoples reactions would be harsher than now.

Also I think almost everyone knows that if England had worse group or bracket luck then they would have been eliminated much sooner. This was probably the easiest road England will ever have had to reach a WC final
