On one hand, a lot of these play on situations are great for the flow and it's a much more enjoyable experience for viewers. On the other hand, clear yellow cards and penalties are getting no called as well and that's also horrible to see. Players should be properly punished and it feels like there's so much getting let go that we've totally gone the other way with refereeing this tournament, when most players are not used to how lax the refs are being with their whistles.

The refs are coming from very different leagues, with very different standards for what is acceptable. They have to be consistent throughout the match, thoguh.

Generally, I think the officiating standards of this tournament has been good, and VAR works pretty well. Many important decisions have been overturned, both ways.

I find mistakes made during the WC are so bad that they leave a bad taste for the general referee performance.

Why?
Ref mistakes happen, always have, always will.
It shocks me how badly people take them. They are just a part of the game.
I'll have a moan about them sometimes, sure, but if you take a step back you realise the game is ridiculously hard to referee and this stuff just happens. There's never any need for conspiracy theories. Its the same for a percentage of every fan base, every decision that goes against you or for a particular player or team becomes evidence of some deliberate ploy among the powers that be.

There are 50/50 situations where you have to live with the refs decision.
And then there are blatant mistakes by both the Ref and VAR and 99% of the world population see this mistake at first glance and ask themselves how dafuq could that have been missed?

Yeah Argentina have been blatantly advantaged last WC and it seems this WC too. We used our luck defying referees with Wemby vs SGA/OKC already this year, I am not super confident France can overcome Infantino’s Argentina, Yamal’ Spain or even England. Germany don’t look as scary as they were in 2016 or even 2018, but it’s still a scary opponent

Still, good showing so far, and Mbappé can make miracles happen so I have some hopes for a third star

I know mistakes happen, and I am fine with that BUT:

- the mistakes are grave and shouldnt happen at THAT level especially during the most important competition
- the mistakes happen in favor of some teams/players more often than to others

ESPECIALLY when you have all the tools you could possible come up with to fix the mistakes before they could impact whole games...we have so much technology, VAR, 4 refs etc etc and still stuff happens that are so obvious.

Bellingham was seen covering his mouth while talking to an opponent. I guess it wasn't either caught live by refs or considered confrontational.

I thought confrontational would imply any banter towards opponents, but now I'm not sure. I hope this doesn't turn into another mess of varied interpretations. Just draw the line on talking to opponents and there's at least some clarity on how things are ruled

No question our offensive players are much better. Ajer is decent, Ryerson is good, but LB, GK and the other CB is where we are mediocre.

I think both teams are gonna rest a bunch of players. Which probably hardly matters for France but Norway B is significantly worse.

The Norwegian substitutes so far have had a lot of impact, to the point I think the starters might not be the right ones. There are some very hungry Norwegian players on the bench, eager to show their skills on the biggest stage.

I hope they give Haaland at least 60 minutes. Ødegaard needs to play too, he has been injured too much this season, and needs to get in rhythm if they want to go deep.

Korea is horrendous. I hope they don't make it through. Awful, boring, no energy football. Deserve to go home off those last two performances. Compare them to Japan who play with such energy, togetherness, and exciting football.

Yes the game is difficult to referee for on-field referees. That's why we need technological help. We do have that with VAR and the big tournaments were actually really good with using it but this world cup it's a disgrace.

The big teams profit even more now with all the smaller countries not getting the correct calls.

I’m with Jock mostly here, I haven’t seen too much to indicate conspiracy versus the odd mistake.

Scotland last night got a Vini Jr goal chalked off by VAR for a pretty soft foul most viewers (and commentary team) completely missed, and they’re the small team in that equation. Ok it’s just one game mind!

I haven’t minded the refereeing this tournament chiefly because it feels quite consistent across games. Refs are being a bit more lenient in calling fouls, and the threshold of VAR being invoked being a little higher, which as a policy one may quibble, but it does seem a pretty consistently applied one.

Without going too deep into my thoughts on VAR (handballs argh), and it being used too much on very marginal infractions, and interrupting flow, all it seems to have done is change the focus of people’s moaning from on the field errors (or not) to ones made via VAR.

Can I point out the obvious?

The big teams, when decisions go their way, tend to get given penalties and goals that they wouldn't have originally gotten.
The smaller teams tend to get given free kicks, offsides and handballs in their defensive areas because the big teams are usually the ones attacking.

So when the big team gets a decision it drastically changes the match state, whereas when the small team gets a decision the game state is more likely to stay the same

So an intuitive judgement will be wrong because both sides of the equation are not balanced.

Well the two big wrong calls were Messi not getting a red card in the Algeria game and Ghana not getting a penalty vs England. Two big decisions for two smaller teams
