I don't understand why Germany didn't experiment with the roster more, tested some things, rested some players and gave others a chance, like the US did. This was the game for that.

Because of Nagelsmann. I really hope the rumours are true that Klopp will take over

Never been a fan of Nagelsmann. He coached the rivals of my club, when he started in the BL and was always too full of himself. He's never taken responsibility and prefers crying over everything, keeping his arrogance no matter what.

Seriously, you got to play with more than one striker at some point if you don't dominate every opponent, which they obviously won't. And i don't mean only Undav for Sane, which was kind of the main topic considering the roster over here. This was the game to stop being so fucking predictable, be bold. The result was not important and no one would have cared.

Klopp probably has the most cozy high pay job in European football, but he is destined to coach Germany at some point. Can't wait for it to happen.

Japan vs. Brazil might be a banger, won't miss that.

Edit: I fell asleep after the 1-1, but watching the highlights in the morning, the second Ecuador goal is on Neuer. He should have caught that going against the ball, but he just stood there waiting for it to fall into his hands.
After the 1st CL game against PSG everyone thought he was HIM again, that probably netted him the starting spot and trust, but he's not the same anymore.

Those are all good games!

Canada should win, good to have hosts with us a bit longer.

Brazil could slip against a disciplined and efficient Japanese squad.

NL vs Mar is a tossup for me.

USA could also slip, I expect a banger, with very enthusiastic Bosnian fans!

I expect 2 of these to go to penalties.

I think Canada will win as well.
Brazil has to win or be shamed a lot, I like how Japan is playing but they are the underdogs here.
Nederlands vs Marocco is super crazy, both I think are equally good so either overtime even penalties.
US will lose I am afraid and this can kill a lot of hype.

I am disappointed Norway fielded a full reserve team against France. Sure, it is nice to rest some players and let everyone play, but momentum is also important, as is giving the starting 11 fresh gameday experience against a quality opponent.

France knows this. Dembele and Mbappé both play, and the former is having a field day😥

I wonder a bit if Norway is not only resting the players, but also playing a bit to the dark horse role of theirs. They've got a lot of good attacking pieces and likely some defensive vulnerabilities. You probably don't want to reveal too much of that against the tournament favorites until it really matters.

It is plausible, but I think letting everyone play to keep the team spirit high was more important. The coach also got scared when he saw the state of his players at the end of the Senegal game.

There is no institutional knowledge of how to go about long knockout tournaments in Norway. France chose a very different strategy, going out hard with the starters, but saving energy in the 2nd half.

The coach Solbakken will be seen as a genius if this works out, but a fool if they bomb out of the ro32.

i think bad referees are a staple of WC's first rounds. Much like worse teams get knocket out, bad referees also get sent home as rounds go by and usually the final rounds have the refs most people are used plus one or 2 that are decent enough to not be remembered.

Hence why usually its not something that is usually remembered, but i feel this is pretty common.

PS with the caveat that i've watched a lot less games than usual in a WC but still from the things i've seen they dont feel that far off from the usual when you get a lot less experienced refs in a field with much faster or physical players than they are used to.

I don't think the referees are that bad. Almost all the league have controversial ref decisions every week. Refereeing gets a disproportionate amount of attention.

There's also a lot more games in the group stage this time than normal, more refs required and the standard gets diluted as a result

Of course the best African referee was denied entry as well

Any idea how common the VAR is right now in top tier leagues? Top 5 leagues definitely have it, but I'm not sure if all the refs in the tournament run into VAR in their weekly matches or so. And even if they do, I'm not sure if all the conventions are always similar when you're working in a different competition with different people in a different country.

Western Europe for sure it's in all leagues. But what about Paraguay, Congo or Uzbekistan? Might not even have to go that far: Bulgaria or Ukraine?
E: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_assistant_referee
Assuming it's up to date: yes for Bulgaria, Ukraine and Paraguay. No for Uzbekistan and Congo. In fact, very few Asian or African domestic leagues use VAR if that wiki is right.
