Algerias keeper is the son of Zinedine Zidane btw. And he switched nations from France to Algeria a while back

the 3 gk's for algeria have a combined cap count of 13 which is absolutely grim

even looking at their wiki, within the last 12 months the most capped gk they've used has only 21 caps.

I think it's a stonewall yellow but not a red after watching the replay. There's not much force even with the studs up high on the leg. I think if the challenge was more forceful it should've been a stonewall red but with how he went into it, yellow should've been more than fair but it's also Messi so there's always going to be controversy with refs wanting to favor him and keep him on the field.

Yeah. I'm fine with yellow on this one based on the angles I've seen.

One notable thing also is that the studs connect after they've had quite a bit of body contact. The usual red card offences are in situations where player leads with their leg and is in full control of where they're placing it. Meanwhile over here it seems that the initial contact is body to body and that makes it much harder to consistently judge where you should place your feet when both are shuffling for balance and all that mess. It's a bit similar as handballing when knowingly blocking a shot or cross vs handballing in a goal front scramble where you're actively being pushed around and all that.

I don't think red is completely off the table here considering how wild the rulings sometimes are and how clumsy the initial move is by Messi, but I do think this is probably the more sane decision unless there's clear malice involved in the tackle. On this one I'm not sure, he's definitely looking at the feet, but it's a scramble and the reaction seems pretty genuine once he connects with the studs.

Oh wow Ronaldo doing basically nothing at 50 years old, who’d have possibly thought that might be an issue?

yeah we decided to play with less 3, Ronaldo, Bernardo and Bruno Fernandes didn't show up and the coach let them play (well BS was subbed at half time).

Terrible game all around.

Its ridiculous how penalties are taken nowdays...the taker can basically do everything to fake the shot and the keeper has even less chances.

Not bad England, not bad at all Tommy Tuchs

Not a sparkling performance but pretty thoroughly dispatched a decent Croatia, probably more a 5-1 on balance than a 4-2

Thought Bellingham had a pretty good all-round game which bodes well

I think it's a clear red. Studs into the back of his legs is dangerous play no matter the intent. He's lucky here because he's Messi. Var should've intervened.

Loving the British media right now.
They do it every time.
One win and suddenly we're going to win the whole thing.

Watching that yesterday my main thought was 'there's absolutely no way a team with this defence wins anything, ever'

Entertaining match though, more of that is good.

Offensively you look stellar. Pickford probably the worst gk for any top 10 team by a mile? (I actually don't have a full overview so maybe I'm off).

Everything concerning referee decisions in the box makes me want to not watch any footie ever again. Stupid handball rules, stupid penalty rules, stupid decisions in general.
I mean, teams are actively practising how to create stupid penalties.
At this point we should get rid of penalties altogether IMO. There HAVE to be better solutions.

Compared to my memories the media is pretty chilled out compared to how they hyped things in the 2000s and 2010s

Agreed that the defence is looking a tad ropey, although probably worth noting that Croatia’s first was a pretty exceptional low-percentage play, the second a cracking hit and they didn’t create all that many chances.

It feels to me that maybe that midfield trio, Kane putting in a defensive shift and wingers who work their arse off like Gordon will restrict most non-elite teams to very little. But if a team does get to have a crack at the defensive unit they might get some joy based on that performance.

On the flip side it’s not a bad unit on paper, so could just be a bad day at the office. Maybe would have gone with Guehi if I were the coach. I think the only real problem is England haven’t gone with many orthodox left backs. Lewis Hall had probably the best season of any English player in that position, Luke Shaw actually had a decent second half of the season and has a lot of tournament experience.

I think there’s a good case to take at least one of them, instead of relying on natural right backs who can do a job at left back, natural midfielders who can do a job there, or a giant centre back in Dan Burn who can play there

On paper probably, he might not even be the current best English keeper, although I don’t think Germany are too hot in that department right now. Pickford does tend to bring it in tournaments though, if his usual level is a good but not elite Prem glovesman, he tends to outperform that. Plus he does seem to be a real leader in these groups

He wasn’t great first half but even a bad half Bellingham will have some good moments, and he did step it up a bit second half. I think because he’s so ludicrously gifted as a midfielder people can forget he really does frequently work his arse off

The problem is we are most likely to play against those elite teams (at least, one of them), and when our midfield is matched by one equally as good and hard working, our defence isn't enough to cope.
I imagine us playing against France with their front line and I can only see embarrassment.

Rules be rules, least in the Croatia England occasion the Croats were double infringing by having players encroaching into the box too.

I do agree penalties are getting a bit silly in various areas. A 70%+ chance of a goal from any handball no matter how intentional or advantageous feels a bit much.

In terms of penalties themselves, I’d be in favour of clamping down a bit on stuttered runups a little. Feels the balance between taker and goalkeeper can be a bit skewed

Maybe give both players complete freedom of movement after the whistle. Like the tender can literally attack. That'll teach the taker to hurry the fuck up

It's beyond ridiculous at this point. He did not even get a yellow for that, while many a player would get a red. No card is just a joke. I don't even want to watch him play anymore, it's pretty easy when you can do no wrong.
