Funny. I'd say Netherlands were worse than Japan. :D So I guess it's a very well deserved draw haha.

Game was very good though imo. It was a very hot time they played and they tried their best not to lose the game since they are both going for #1 and #2 in the group. Would have been stupid for either of them to go guns blazing

We were better for 75% of the game. At some point we had 7 shots on target vs 2 for Japan with 70% ball possession. Stats don't tell you everything but they do tell you enough when it's that lopsided. After Koemans weird subs Japan was clearly better for a period of 15-20 minutes. That said, I agree with your conclusion that it's a deserved draw. We conceded the goals way too easily. You can't do that if you want to win the tournament.

I don’t share your view that we were playing not to lose. We were playing to win. Japan's game plan was to defend and counter. We were just not capable of properly breaking the Japanese defense most of the time. Which is probably worse.

That is a crazy stat but to be fair we failed to qualify a few times in the 2010s.

Your subs were pretty clearly playing to not lose after going up 2-1. Bringing on Ake for Gravenberch and going to a back 5 demonstrates that.

Holy did Arne Slot mind control Spain? Looked like a Liverpool game, all possession and no teeth.

No need to drag Slot into it. Spain has that tendency in their worse games. And this looked WC 2014 levels of bad. Uninspired passing around, not enough movement, and no individual sparks of brilliance. They were obviously missing Lamine Yamal for most of the game, and when he came on, it was his first game in 2 months. They were also a bit unlucky to not have one of the many shots go in, which would presumably have opened the game up a bit. But yeah, Oyarzabal missed a million chances. Gavi and Torres were worse still and should have gone off at half time. Not sure what de la Fuente was thinking leaving them on so long.

Just 2018, right? So that's 2010 (finals), 2014 (third place match), 2022 (quarter finals). That's quite a lot of games to not lose in 90 mins in, actually!

You're right. I included euro 2016.

As Drone says defending a lead isn't the same as playing not to lose.

Surprisingly fun game between New Zealand and Iran. Both clearly playing to win and scoring twice. First goal from NZ was sick.

Christian Wood looked like a man amongst kids whenever he received the ball. Dude was on one.

This WC shaping up really well so far, very exciting matches thus far.

The stadiums seem to be at least 90% full. The media coverage about dynamic pricing and hotels being empty led me to believe the games would be empty. But everything I have seen so far (around 5 games) looks great with a beautiful atmosphere in the arenas.

I've seen varying reports about empty seats: Sometimes about 5000, sometimes 400. Depending on who is playing.
About 180.000 tickets were on the re-sale market a few days ago. Guess some of those have been sold for a discount

Yeah I'm gonna be looking on the market for cheap tickets for Netherlands vs Sweden hopefully.

i just turned the tv on and unless this france senegal game has a lot of people still taking their half time break despite the second half already started, there is less than 90% capacity there for sure.

Seats have colours which makes it harder to tell but still, that lower section accross the field is mostly empty right now.....again i just turned on so not sure if it was better before the half time and people have yet to comeback but at 48mins it looks bad.

Norway-Iraq was a great game! I was very impressed that Iraq came to play, and had a good game plan to exploit Norway's weaknesses. Alas, their attackers are good, but not world class, so their chances only resulted in only 1 goal. In the end, they were too tired to keep pressing.

As for Norway... That was messy! Players running on top of teammates, bad defending, invisible midfield players... But, the team has so many great attacking players the goals will come. The first game was vintage Haaland. Nusa showed some beautiful details. 4 substitutes made a huge impact at the end, should some of them have started?

I think it's a stonewall yellow but not a red after watching the replay. There's not much force even with the studs up high on the leg. I think if the challenge was more forceful it should've been a stonewall red but with how he went into it, yellow should've been more than fair but it's also Messi so there's always going to be controversy with refs wanting to favor him and keep him on the field.

Norway was dreadful tbh. Probably the worst performance in an official game since the 1-5 loss to Austria almost two years ago. Really flattering result - I think 2-2 would've been more fair.

I do think the team will look better in the next two games. They were obviously really nervous - now, with a great result from game 1, they can relax a bit. Iraq also had a great gameplan - they must've noticed that Sander Berge is always part of the build up, so they kept marking him and then our CBs just didn't know what to do. After 25 minutes we adjusted through Berge dropping down to the CBs so he could get the ball and it looked a bit better, but the midfield was just a big mess. Aursnes and Haaland were both way below par, while Nusa had a few nice moments Iraq did a good job neutralizing him as well.

Amazing result, though. Now, even if we lose by 1 goal vs Senegal and 2 goals vs France, we're actually quite likely to advance as one of the best third place teams.
