Echoing the wtf no handball and overall I thought Germany was slightly superior, but that might just be because Spain was in the lead most of the second half - which was the period where Germany looked better. Even though Germany lost in the quarter finals I think they can be happy with how their team performed, along with Spain they are the one big team to not disappoint. France Portugal was boring, but both teams are very strong defensively. I hope we get an early goal from Spain-France, or else I think France might succeed in turning that into a snoozefest as well. Gotta say that while Ronaldo's tournament was very disappointing and he's finally showing his age, Pepe playing like this at 41 is impressive as hell. A couple occasions where he's been exposed on speed but he's also played with incredible smartness. Never pictured myself saying anything positive about him, tbh, but to me he's been Portugal's best player. And even for a defender, that's practically unheard of at 41. I guess Maldini retired at 41, too, dunno to what degree he saw a dip in form at the end. I don't understand why this should've been the finals. Germany's tournament has not been that good. They've had a good game vs Scotland, drew against Switzerland, required a very soft penalty to finally score against a weak Denmark, and are out against the first top country they play. They were better than Spain for parts of the game but this is also because Spain subbed off their best offensive players to defend the lead. There were also multiple fouls that should've been yellow. It was an okay tournament for them but not much more than that. Especially so if you take in consideration the quality of the team, the coach, and it being a home tournament.

Given the first 4 games, who looked more deserving of being in the finals? Certainly not France or England, who.have looked like crap for most of the tournament. A case could be made for Portugal, but while they had shown brilliance they have struggled to score in every one of their games, leading to a penalty shootout vs Slovenia. Netherlands got smashed by Austria, who showed their defense is shockingly bad, and Turkey have played entertaining but not great football, and got drubbed by Portugal. That leaves Switzerland. They certainly dazzled vs Italy, but they also had one of the least inspired matches of the tournament vs Scotland. Germany had looked comfortably better than all those teams, which is why it seemed like Spain - Germany should be the final, not a quarterfinals. But it's just the way the cookie crumbles. Just like sometimes Serral faces Maru in the Ro8.

So is the notion that germany was better overall yesterday. They finished regular time strong and were above in the end but most definitly not for the whole game. I would also bet germany would be out against either portugal or france. Just see games against switzerland and denmark. If it wasnt for the toe nail offside denmark would have taken out germany. They were not going to score that game the way it was going before the penalty opened up things. Also france vs portugal was that much boring than the other game of the day? Take the desperation part of the final out and the aggressiveness of the tackles and you get the same game. It looked like there were more near misses in the second than the first game, the 2 teams just dont play with as much flair as Spain.

And yes, for some reason suspended players can't be subbed. I'm having the same issue, but l have enough slacking players for it to not matter... And finally: UEFA declared that unlike shown in game stats and TV broadcast yesterday, Morata did not get carded. That was an 'accident'. Therefore he won't be suspended.

There are still a lot of games to be played.

Sure, and by the time the finals rolls around we'll have a different storyline about how it's coming home, or Switzerland or Turkey's Cinderella story or even the Netherlands is looking mighty with Gakpo and Depay being goal scoring machines. But Germany and Spain were the strongest teams so far and one had to smack down the other to advance from the QF. By the very definition, one of their stories ends here, and they don't get to show they are indeed the two best teams by both making it to the finals.

Depay honestly hasn't done much to deserve his spot imo. Would much prefer to see Koeman giving Weghorst a chance. RIght now it feels like Gakpo has to hardcarry us and having another finisher might ease the pressure on him a bit. Depay's main strength was from free kicks and distance shots in the past and he hasn't really delivered on that in a while.

Yes their offense has been as impressive as it should be due to the players involved, but at the same time their defense has been great, and on average they had to play the toughest set of opponents of all remaining teams by some distance. Aside from Rafa Leao seemingly beating Kounde every single time, yeah they’ve been pretty solid. But it feels like their defence has been solid because they’ve been so defensive, and by being so defensive it’s affecting their attacking balance a bit. More so than even previous Deschaumps sides. A StarCraft player turtling on 3 bases can defend their territory well, but IMO to be a good defensive player you have to do so while simultaneously being a bit more adventurous, taking more bases and making attacks happen simultaneously. It could just be personnel not quite bringing their best too, Camavinga is a player I’ve seen be more dynamic in the past, but I don’t know if that’s his issue or what he’s being told to do. Griezman’s been tidy but not quite as incisive as previous tournaments. Dembele was dangerous last night but it seemed every time he broke the line he didn’t have many options but shooting I get the feeling that this gameplan is heavily reliant on Mbappe bringing close to his A game, with him doing that they go from being a huge threat on the counter especially to kinda just defensive and somewhat impotent.

Going to be another classic Southgate masterclass today, best right wing back in England, Trippier going to start and show Trent how to run up and down the flanks while foden and bellingham get in eachothers way causing Kaners to drop back into cm to play throughballs to himself. ITS COMING HOME!!!!!!!! 3-0 its in the bag.

Lets gooooooooo England have been luckier than other teams in that they’ve had plenty of warnings about their issues, but haven’t yet been punished and knocked out. If they can fix 1 or 2 of them, if their top players really show up then there’s nothing to fear from Switzerland. Plenty to respect and not take them for granted, but England are the better side if they can get it together. If we see the England we’ve seen so far, oh dear. It’s really only for the football and the cricket I get my England hat on, in general English jingoism deeply annoys me but the team and manager are a pretty likeable bunch.

Add a back 3 now so we can actually defend in a shape and Stones can play his game, we can now have two number 10s! Foden masterclass incoming!

Does not look like a 3 at the back formation to me.
