i am not sure if these players, if they are really guilty, are dumb enough to think that people would believe them when they say shit like "I’m a sporting professional, I don’t have a great understanding of taxes and law”. like do they not have accountants?

Taxation isnt exactly straightforward when you make that much money. And its not like they werent paying basic taxes or taxes period. They just werent paying it on what was deemed taxable incoming. The kind that cant be with held by the govt and the onus is on you to pay.

Masch and Messi are not the only ones guilty of this, it has happened quite often in the past. And if they get advised poorly and improperly they arent going to go around figuring out tax law. I mean all the football related arguments aside, just look at his face. The ability to analyze or even process this sort of information is what people go to college for. These guys have basic educations at best.

Accountants are A) not exactly saints and B) try to save as much money as possible because that means more money for them to play with.

Its imaging rights money that he admitted to concealing, his accountant probably moved it here or there and thought he could get away with it. Or maybe the flip side, maybe he did know that he should pay tax on it but didnt think it a big deal or was told that if they do certain things it wouldnt be an issue. Either way his lawyer said, "bro they got you. Just take this one on the chin."

You really think these guys are going around checking whether their income is being properly taxes themselves ? I doubt it.

Mascherano wrote a letter explaining exactly how he hired a studio of accountants to manage his money/taxes, and then he changed it for another one when it looked like he might be on trouble (and they confirmed he was), because that stuff is way too complicated for him.

If it was someone else I might doubt him. But Masche? He's a saint.

Yes whilst i agree footballers are way to dumb to tax evade, im pretty sure the courts take this into account right? Masch "i had no idea about this until the police came knocking, my money is sorted out by this accountant firm". That stands surely in a court of law? then the whole blame is shifted from Masch to the accountancy firm no? I thought he would be able to plead ignorance here but when they are sentencing him so harshly surely they feel he is lying and knew about it?

He should be glad he hasn't "been done" in America because the IRS take no shit xD

Also wtf at the laws in Spain where the first offenders don't have to go to prison for 12 month sentences ?

If it's your first offence and the sentence is under 24 months actually, you are like on parole I think, never set foot on prison. Also have to pay big bucks too.

CR has been paying his taxes to Madeira since forever and was never on court for it. Messi paid his taxes to countries he was working on tv spots and had to pay like 30M € for it. Just RM/Spain things.

Every footballer does what masch does everyone or at least the ones on £€$100,000 a week plus. It's a joke, England and the premier league arguably probably pays the most wages to footballers probably get lets tax off of them than Drs and Nurses!! Every stupid footballer like Rooney for example, sets himself up as a "business" and with said loop holes will probably pay less tax than me because of it!

That's how everyone rich does it. The less you pay in taxes because of avoidance the riskier it usually is though. You can get fucked pretty hard like Messi and Mascherano if you make a mistake.

Pretty sure top footballers pay heavier taxes in Spain after their first four years, compared to most other similar countries. Like 40-50% of most of their income.

Players have left to other countries for that very reason.

Yeah but don't they all "get around" it with dodgy shenanigans which is the way they do it in England. They should all get 60% tax on their wages in England. Anyone over £100,000 a year is 60% tax bracket. Yet i highly doubt they pay that much because its a joke
