Humans are born hyperopic. The human eye ball can change shape in six months.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7001530/

The current myopia epidemic is fascinating. There is a tonne of lobbying going on for sex reassignment surgery in Canada as the country removes funding for basic eye exams. LOL.

It is critical to see an ophthamologist once or twice a year.

Weight goals -- I'm going for a basic body recomp but keeping it at the same weight. If it fluctuates I don't care.
Training goals -- I'm gonna participate in my first 70.3 at June Lake in California. It's a tough race and I'l probably finish worse than average but just finishing is the goal. Placing in the 50th percentile would be fantastic.
Nutrition goals -- At least 100 g protein every day, and otherwise get a good balance of macros and micros. I've been advised I'll need to increase the protein intake to about 175 to have the bodybuilder amount, but my gut needs to work up to that.
Sleep goals -- 8ish hours every night. A little more hopefully. I get home at 8:40, so if I'm asleep within 15 minutes, I'll be able to get up at 5 and be okay
Misc/stress goals -- Can't let things pile up, so I'm just gonna spend a TON of time at the office. Otherwise, mom is home to help with food and cleaning. Gonna need to quit weed soon, too. That's the last major vice I have that obstructs my training / health. Hopefully I'll be off it by Feb 17.

Just gave me flashbacks to making these posts at the beginning of every year when we used to make a new thread yearly.

You'll definitely want to make sure you're getting enough protein for many reasons related to performance and fueling your workouts properly with carbs. I actually came across a really handy nutrition guide for endurance athletes while I was browsing NLM NIH yesterday:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6628334/table/nutrients-11-01289-t001/?report=objectonly

FWIW: it's probably a good idea to quit weed but as far as vices go it's not gonna ruin your performance capabilities unless it's causing you to skip training and eat like shit all the time or whatever

Random updates:
7 weeks out from first proper weightlifting comp in a few years outside of a couple random fun ones. I managed to recover a good amount of the strength I lost since my ankle dislocation + hip tendonitis + elbow bursitis at the end of rugby last fall. Snatch at 105kg, CJ at 125kg, squat at 165kg, front squat 145kg. Making good progress week over week even on top of cycling ~100 miles/wk and bit of rugby to get my fitness back as well. Will prob dial in my diet a bit to drop a couple kg so im walking around at 102kg by comp time.

the life expectancy in the USA and Canada continues to fall.

Big cities have a growing population of homeless incoherent zombies roaming the streets. Its almost like a game of BOrderlands1 with random "Psychos" running in all directions screaming and yelling incoherently. In Canada, the "Handsome Jack" character is played by their Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

My squat has been low in general the past few years from not focusing on it, haven't squatted 200kg in ~3 years and it's probably been 5 years since i squatted 205+. I had finally got my squat back up to 182kg/400lb in october about a week before the injuries started. I tried to push through the right ankle dislocation for rugby playoffs but my left hip completely died on me from overcompensating to the point where the tendinitis made walking/standing painful and lost nearly all the strength from nerve compression. The random elbow bursitis was just icing on the cake ^_^ Was pretty much only able to do bodyweight, empty bar, very scaled down rehab, yoga, and mobility work for 4-8 weeks before I could start lifting again in December. I've definitely got legs for more but still hammering out my hip imbalances/deficiencies and core work.

Dang, rugby really beats you up. I lift twice a week now and play beach volleyball the other days which is really good on the joints and that. I got back into lifting properly 11 months ago and beat my best 5 rep that I have proof of last night, 130kg for 5 @ 64kg bw. Really happy to hit a good lift like that after training again.

Over double bodyweight for 5 is very impressive, nice work! Yeah rugby isn't great on the body but man is it fun

As the myopia epidemic continues with no end in sight the next step will be a glaucoma epidemic.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3530820/

We are ramping up towards an unprecedented level of glaucoma and blindness in poeple over 40.

What vision habits are you employing to maintain and improve your vision?

no clue dude... see ur doctor. i had a corneal ulcer once. it healed. as a precaution i went to the Doc though.
the cornea is an inert structure kinda like your fingernails and toenails.

regarding Myopia and Glaucoma... the longer you are myopic the greater risk you have for elevated intraocular eye pressure. Also, the surgery to "cure" your vision does not help lower eye pressure because the shape of your eye remains the same.

That was a joke, I don't do anything for it but apparently i am unintentionally avoiding it just by doing things that make sense to me, i.e. being outside a lot (sports), having a comfortable set up for my work monitors, and lots of natural light in my office/apartment. The epidemic seems mostly to be an asian thing so I guess i'm preventing it by not being born there. And from the study you linked (and studies cited in it) it doesn't seem like they've made a causal connection between myopia and glaucoma, just a population correlation despite researching the connect since 1925.

Myopia in the USA is rising sharply. 100 years ago it was rare.

the increased eye pressure present in myopic people increases the likelihood of glaucoma in later life. people with myopia have higher eye pressure as they age. the increase in myopia results in a myriad of eye problems in later life.

myopic eyes have a degenerate vitreous that is more likely to collapse and separate from the retina, also increasing the risk of retinal tears

keep on dreaming dude.

ignore myopia at your own peril.

Not dreaming, just reading the studies you shared. We have little understanding of how the eye grows, it's mostly done by the time you're a teen, and things associated with lower myopia don't reverse myopia once it started. The only reasonable recommendation I would make at this time is to make sure your kids spend time outside if you have any, and if you are already myopic talk to your ophthalmologist. Outside of that I don't think it really needs to occupy your waking moments or health and fitness goals.

i think an annual appointment with an ophthalmologist is a wise move. and it is part of maintaining good health. Furthermore, eye health in the NA is going down hill. Several jurisdictions in Canada no longer pay for eye doctor appointments.
Thus, i think its a relevant topic regarding maintaining over all health.

I project the next series of surveys done this year will show higher rates of glaucoma in the USA since the problem has been tracked.

What do you think will happen with glaucoma rates in NA?

due to the change in myopia rates in NA it is related to vision habits. The average North American today has very different vision habits than in 1950. The eye can change shape at any age. People develop myopia in the 30s , 40s and beyond. And people sometimes get a different perscription every year. So their eyes are changing.

Idk, a bunch of people that are statistically going to be dealing with obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular disease in a world heading towards disaster might also get glaucoma? Pretty low on the pecking order in terms of low hanging fruit rn so maybe I'll just invest in mid market PE fund buying up vision clinics and hope for the best.

Haven't pulled anything heavy lately so took a quick rip at 207kg after my lifting and it moved better than expected which was nice. Not quite pulling it for 3-5 like I was yet but mostly moving like I was in the fall. If anything I'm feeling a bit more explosive especially running, all that forced time to work on my imbalances that I was compensating for is paying off.

Welp, I'm officially mad. Decided to get a bit more serious than usual about my cycling this year, had an okay time in pre-season, treated myself to a fancy new bike and all which just came in last week... then today while doing some light openers for my first race tomorrow some drunk guy on an ebike decides to cut across the lane for no reason and takes me right out D:

No serious injuries thankfully, but the fork and the fancy carbon wheels on my bike look completely fucked, not sure if I can recover the hype to wake up at 4 am for the race tomorrow, given the road rash and the bruises -.-

Still plenty of months in the season of course but man, being all excited for a fancy new toy only to have something like this (completely unavoidable from my side, IMO) happen right after is some serious 'we live in a simulation' level nonsense.

it is fascinating how scummy the Ophthalmology profession is. Lasik is a bad procedure.

There are plenty of good Ophthalmologists out there. There are also lots of scumbuckets. As with everything in 2024: one must be a diligent consumer of any and all medical services. It does not matter how many letters the person has after their name. Caveat Emptor.

issues with glaucoma , optical nerve damage, and capillary damage around the eye are intertwined with cardio vascular issues. so you can get an early warning of upcoming cardio vascular issues with a thorough eye exam.

Previously you gave the "mostly an asian thing" comment. Now, you've made this comment about impending world disaster. I'm assuming this is all just disingenuous babble. I'll conclude with: its a good idea to get a thorough eye exam every year. Twice a year is even better.
