According to these rules the russian champion will be guaranteed a first seed, possibly at the expense of Barca/Real.

Edit: it's a decent change but in the end it doesn't really do a lot to close the gap between the top and the rest. There's just too much money going around nowadays.

I think it is completely justified. While I don't think it will make much difference by the time you reach the quarters, I think it will make the groups a lot more interesting, giving "smaller" teams who win a strong local league a shot at qualifying without running the risk of getting put in a group they have no chance in. The champions of the top 7 leagues plus the previous winner seems like a more interesting way to seed than the top 8 teams regardless of league (which could end with something as ridiculous as Barça, RM and Atletico all getting a pot 1 seed).

Picture this happening then: Group A: Bayern, Barca (2nd, lol steve), Liverpool (pot 3 2014), AS Roma (pot 4 2014) Group B: Zenit, Basel (pot 2 2014), Olympiakos (pot 3 2014), Malmo (pot 4 2014). Group C: PSV, Shakhtar, Bilbao, Maribor (same as group B) I only think it adds to the group randomness and it doesn't really add something at all. Yes, some average teams could now make it out of their group, but I think the amount of boring RO16 matches is big enough as it is now.

The same can be said for Barça (more likely, imho) or Bayern (league is pretty much won already). Hell, even Juve could fit the bill, although I don´t see them reaching the finals vs. any of the other 3 teams, let alone winning it. As for your horror scenario, I still think it´s better to have a good mix, and give more league champions a better chance at getting to the Ro16. It would simply make the Ro16 more interesting than having it be dominated by the Spanish and English teams (who will be there anyway, but they might have to work a bit harder in the groups).

(only to get roflstomped by the big teams, just now one round later...) but oh well, everything is more interesting than this year's barca/psg/dontevenrememberlol group, or last years bayern/city/bate/cska group (with a difference of 12 points between the 2nd and 3rd place team... 12 points after 6 matchdays...) sure, most fans wont care about who advances from a zenit/basel/olympiakos/malmö group, but with groups like that, one can at least not say "see you at knockout stage" right after the group drawings. so overall, i approve this change. it will make the group stage slightly more interesting. but the semis will continue to consist of "[3 out of bayern/barca/real/chelsea] + 1 outsider team from a top4 league".

I'm really glad Juventus made it all the way to the semis, though the games against Monaco weren't too impressive or interesting. Maybe they can beat Real! EDIT: Actually now that I think about it those new seeding rules won't really change all that much. Teams from pots 1 and 2 will still remain so for the most part, only portuguese and russian teams in pot 1 are out of place but that will just make two pot2 teams lucky and that's it. We won't suddenly get an invasion of mediocre teams from mediocre leagues or a group with Real, Bayern, Juve and PSG.

They beat the most difficult opponent in the quarterfinals and did so in a pretty commanding way (not dominating the games visibly but never been in danger of being knocked out) AM kept beating RM all year and this time they played without two vital players and did a very good job.

For me Barca vs Bayern/Real would be great, as long as we get to see those games i don't mind the final + semi final draws. Nothing would be more fun than seeing Pep vs Messi and seeing how he handles him or what is more fun than El Classico finals!

Juve won't be a finalist. Every non Barca/Bayern/Real finalist earned their spot by playing really good football on their way to the final (and kicked out some high profile team in the process) Juve just lucked their way into the semifinals... They shouldn't really belong there imo.

Ajax/Ajax/Ajax/Bayern/Bayern/Bayern/Liverpool/Liverpool/Nottingham/Nottingham were the winners in a row, with Feyenoord, HSV, Aston Villa and 2 times Liverpool again also winning it from '70-'84 That's 3 different leagues in all those years. Can't be arsed to look up second places, probably won't look much better.

I see the 2016-2025 being higher, i can see PSG maybe making a semi final with a decent draw, English team for sure will make it there again in no time. Then you're back up to 5, maybe a lucky run from Porto/Benfica and you could get a 6th but when the 5 leagues in Europe are so far ahead of the others it makes it hard for your Dutch/Portuguese/Turkish teams to go that far.
