However, I tried to go into this with an open mind and the more this tournament went on the more annoying it got. How do you expect to draw European football fans if you constantly tell them that they should feel bad because of the pay disparity between men and women. And that with every article mentioning that women's leagues that actually pay what they might "deserve" are completely unsustainable. So after all I will once again be happy that it will just go away for another two or four years, because in the last two weeks the journalism about this tournament became worse than the refereeing.

Even if germany vs USA wasnt close, it might still be the closest game the US had to play (in the knockout stages at least, I cant tell from my own opinion about the groupstage since I havent seen any of the US mateches there). Who would be your top4 then? For me, the US clearly were the best team, but after that, I think any of germany/england/france/japan, maybe also canada/australia showed such varying performances throughout the tournament that any match within this group could have been (or in fact, was) decided on daily shape.

The German clubs are dominating Europe, even mighty Lyon lost to them again and again during the last 3 seasons. Their success is mostly based on German players, so something must have gone wrong in the national team when they look worse than England or France. Either Neid is right and the players were too exhausted coming from their clubs, which means the preparation time was too short. Or the tactics and the training of the national team were inadequate, which would be Neid's fault.

And Tue/Wed the Gold Cup starts, but the start times are even worse than they were for the Copa America.

The referee didn't decide that game for them. Germany just shit the bed after the RO8, playing offense like a bunch of clueless chickens and embarrassing themselves. Germany vs US wasn't close... Germany never really threatened to score the whole game. Well, considering that the referee completely decided that game with two wrong calls, and Germany had a penalty (that Solo wouldn't have saved if Sasic had just put it about two feet to the right), Yes. Yes it was close. So after the mostly disappointing final rounds the final showed what I already thought during the group stage, women's football has improved a lot and can be very entertaining. I'm up in the air about the women's game. On the one hand, I'm a pretty dedicated feminist, and there's obviously some level of sexism going on in women's sports. The women's game is entertaining, I care to an extent, and I want to care. On the other hand, the women's game just isn't that great. Sure, the game can be entertaining, but the level of play is significantly lower than the level of play we see in U-18 men's games, and saying "They've made progress" is more of an indictment of where they were previously than a complement of where they are now. The technical skill is lacking, the tactics aren't there, the refereeing is awful, and fuck I hate the media surrounding the women's game. All of that parity that people kept on yapping about is also not actually there. The final may have been mildly entertaining (finally we got to see some goals), but it still just ended up being a display of atrocious defending. The U.S. didn't do anything incredible to score, they just lobbed the damn ball into the box. Fuck, one of their goals was from the halfway line, and this was the final of the biggest competition in women's soccer! There still isn't much parity in the women's game. It's the U.S. and Germany consistently at the top + a couple other teams being kind-of there (it use to be Sweden and Norway, now it's France/Japan/maybe England). As much as I call for equality between men and women, it seems suspect to call for sports culture to treat two things equally when they aren't equal in terms of quality. The performance of the German team when it actually mattered was hugely disappointing. First loss to England says it all. I think most of it can be put on Neid. I think it's a combination of selection and tactics. Every level of both sides of the German team has the exact same problem; slow, suspect defense and an offense that has no creativity. New tactics need to be employed and some pace needs to be brought in, at both ends. Neid is done now, so hopefully the next manager can bring in some change. A new manager and another season will do the team some good. Hopefully they'll look better at the next Algarve Cup. And I'd put the world rankings at: 1) U.S. 2) France 3) Germany 4) Japan 5) England Germany had a very legitimate chance to win the game against the U.S. if the correct calls were made (or if Sasic just would've buried a PK she's taken 1000000000 fucking times), and I would've been absolutely terrified for the U.S. if they faced France. France is so damn quick and has such technical ability that I might have pegged them as favorites against the U.S., especially if they had been riding the momentum they would've gotten after defeating Germany. Japan's absolutely atrocious showing in the final means they shouldn't get to move up. While France lost, they looked so damn good that their place is speculative (I think they will be that good in the near future). Germany, as I mentioned, didn't actually perform as poorly as us fans make it sound (they just sucked it up offensively), so it's not like they should drop into oblivion.
