Unless Man Utd are gonna buy someone better soon, or his new system doen't require anyone in that spot. EPL finally starts in a few days, can't wait to watch some games! could be Van Gaal really wants to stick to his 3-5-2 formation in which Valencia would do better as a wingback than Rafael? and keeping Smalling means because he can cover both centreback and rightback when needed. Not sure but I do feel it's kinda weird also, while Rafael is not top class, he performs decently enough

Not sure but I do feel it's kinda weird also, while Rafael is not top class, he performs decently enough The concept of Valencia displacing Rafael makes me sick. Rafael is an incredible talent, really under-rated due to a string of injuries. Valencia even at his best was never Rafael's level and his form is so far very erratic. I'm also pretty worried how Van Gaal plans to fit in januzaj, he needs gametime at this point in his career and was showing signs of being a world beater, with the wing positions gone where will he start? RVP, Rooney, Welbeck will certainly be above him in the pecking order for number 9 and 10, with hernandez and/or James Wilson looking to get games in (also zaha as well maybe? which is what makes the "rumor" of Cavani so ridiculous). Then there's the number 8 Role, Mata is first with kagawa second, and Rooney probably 3rd(Fellini 4th if hes not sold!, also Herrera can play here too), so unless kagawa is sold, he won't get a look in there either, and even if Kag is sold, that's not a lot of games without UCL football. Then there is just wing backs maybe, but i really dont see him playing here. I like what Van Gaals doing so far but it seems short sighted. SAF seemed to be the only one with the balls to sell rooney (or RVP would do too). It seems madness, but we should only have 1 sure starter for the striker role, makes squad selection much easier and can fund a good quality winger like di maria. We are gimping ourselves with this formation just to fit in rvp and rooney and at the cost of the development of good young players like januzaj, and also pushing Kagawa out of the team too.

I personally think the wing-back role is made for Rafael with how he's constantly trying to get forward from right-back, so I don't understand not wanting to keep him there. I guess the problem for Rafael is that Ashley Young seems to have caught Van Gaal's attention in the wing-back position, which means he and Valencia will be fighting for it. I'm told by my friend who is a Watford supporter that Young played wing-back for Watford back in the day, so maybe it isn't the strangest idea in the world; and Young did perform well at wing-back during pre-season. Smalling cant cover wingback, but if Van Gaal decide to switch back to 4-4-2 Smalling has been played there before. Yeah I would also rather keep Rafael, he had his ups and downs, but mostly due to his injuries that limit his growth. Also he is younger than Valencia, so I am confused by the rumour. And I hope Van Gaal can find a place that fit Januzaj. It would be incredibly wasted to put him in some odd position and hinder his growth, like what happened to Kagawa T__T (or may be Kagawa just cant fit into the more physical style of EPL). And also Zaha, didn't see a lot of his plays, but he seems to have the pace and potential

It's three coaches now that have forsaken him (and Moyes' decision was just stupid because Kagawa was always one of the best each time he played). I just don't buy the "can't fit into the physical style of EPL". I mean Messi wouldn't "fit into the physical style of EPL" but he still destroys EPL teams (with the exception of Chelsea) wit Barcelona. So that can't be it. Maybe it's a problem of fitness. I just would love to know. ![]()

But SAF still played Rooney over him behind the striker because that was the only way he could fit RVP and Rooney into the squad. The plan was to sell Rooney, and play Kagawa there after a year of adjusting to utd on the wing. Then Moyes happened. Moyes gave rooney a new contract and bought mata, which isn't the worst decision in the world, but basically spelled out the death of Kagawa. So even though LVG has a system that can incorporate two strikers and an AM, we have Mata now as the AM, so Kagawa starts behind him.

Still, mostly it's down to the erratic nature of his opportunities. He got few chances to really make his mark and then frequently out of position on the wing. I would have hoped LvG could give him a real opportunity to shine but I suspect he will simply be backup for Mata. I'm never a fan of a 3-5-2 formation personally. I think Louis is making a mistake adopting this for the season proper. It's ultimately a defensive formation with 3 CB's which is somewhat unbecoming for a huge club with means. It's also very difficult in my opinion for the players to adapt to a new system they haven't used before in a truncated off-season. Going to be especially hard on the defense and I think it pretty likely they will struggle a bit early on. I'd much prefer some variation of 4-3-3 which Louis is of course known for. Either way, it's gonna be an interesting season.
