The close-by gyms didn't end up having real squat racks... only smith-machines. So I'm going to the free one. First time lifting in over 2 months; my legs feel like jelly.

My first day of not feeling like I had a good workout today. I did my lifts, posted gains on every lift, did my C25k workout, then left. Didn't really break too much of a sweat, wasn't really breathing hard at any point, and I don't feel sore at all right now. I don't know if my body is adapting to more consistent exercise, but for right now I feel like I didn't get enough work done when I left the gym.

Soreness isn't an indicator of progress or the amount of work done in the gym.

Meh I don't particularly like it when I'm very sore, like right now =.=. It makes me feel weak. Yesterday I could bust out chin ups with 15 kg attached. But today I can barely do 5 with my own bodyweight. Lifting means being strong 3/4 days a week and being weak the rest of the week for me haha.

Chest and arm soreness is so good. That soreness warming up on your 2nd session of squats after a long break is awful though, motivation enough to not take a long break.

Flossing hamstrings and sitting on a lacrosse ball at work is pretty incredible.

Since I'm almost done with finals, do you guys have any recommendations for improving flexibility for doing chin ups?

I can do pull ups with no issue (prone grips that is) and my arms feel nice and loose and comfortable, but when I do chin ups my elbows/shoulders feel a bit tight. Obviously I could just do more, but are there corrective stretches I could do?

That's strange, what muscles are limiting that range of motion? Your triceps or something? Is it when you're shoulder is in flexion or extension?
Good luck with finals

Thanks. Mainly, it's when my shoulders are extended and my arm is at its longest when I'm in the dead hang. It just doesn't really feel comfortable to me.

If I'm doing a pull up though, I have no tension whatsoever and no discomfort. It's not really pain, but it just feels a little bit tight and definitely not comfortable. I guess I should also note that I can do like 12 or 13 near perfect form pull ups and that I can do other exercises like dips with no problem, just have a bit of a flexibility issue when my arms are completely extended.

My first thoughts are you can just work on the dead hang in that position. Just try holding it for consecutively longer sets as long as there isn't pain. Second, I can't recommend enough taking a lacrosse ball to whatever muscle/tissues feel tight and restricted and just working in to them. Tacking and flossing. Google mobilitywod shoulder lacrosse ball and I'm sure you'll find something that helps.

I'm on day 2 of having a ball here at work and just working my hamstrings, gluts and even back throughout the day. It's really quite incredible how different my hamstrings feel and I can tell there's still tons of room for improvement.

The good news is that pull-ups, imo, are more difficult than chin-ups so you can look forward to beasting those out soon

I've been thinking of taking some supplements. Going through my diet, I seem to be low on some vitamins and minerals. I can't really visit the doctor because I don't have insurance, but I know supplementing certain things (like Iron) can be dangerous. What other vitamin/mineral supplements are dangerous outside of iron? Are the one a days and various multi-vitamins actually pretty legit, or should you evaluate your diet and find what you're deficient on and supplement those specific vitamins?

I am having a problem with being very tired and sleeping more than 8 hours. I've been feeling this getting worse over time, and I don't have good energy levels especially during the day. I am getting pretty noticable bags under my eyes even sleeping 8-10 hours a night. I'm hoping rounding out my vitamin-mineral intake will help out. If not I'm going to have to visit a doctor, which is going to be a huge deal for me since I can't really afford insurance at this point :/

Any supplement can be dangerous if the dosage is stupidly high, but I think you really have to try in order to hurt yourself with stuff like magnesium, omega-3 and kalcium.

In unrelated news, I'm currently cutting, and as I went to the bathroom a few minutes ago I was calculating in my head how much weight I just lost. That's fucking weird.

Meh the main issues with taking supplements is how much your body actually absorbs out of the stuff that you take. I'd recommend trying to improve your diet, since it should be killing two birds with one stone. How many vegetables/fruits do you eat a day, and do you eat dairy products?

I've also heard that multi-vitamins are basically useless for your health, and that they do next to nothing in terms of reducing risk for certain diseases. I'd recommend trying to get all the nutrients in your food if you can, since you'll absorb more of it and you'll probably fix that energy issue of yours as well. I'm thinking about taking a pro-biotic, but that's about it.

Best supplements in terms of effectiveness, imo, fish oil and vitamin D. You can almost always use more and there's little risk of overdoing it, as in, like Osmoses said, you'd have to be trying something extreme.

if you aren't taking an hour of sun daily, Vit D is supplement with the best ROI; 10 bucks last you 3 months. Its a noticeable difference. Also, nothing wrong with sleeping 8+ hours daily. PPl who sleep 6 hours regularly can get away with that because the don't do sports, and you still feel like shit anyway
