So the Benfica/Porto business model requires buying cheap, developing players, and selling expensive. They have arguably the best scouting systems in the world and a great organizational structure that so far have been quite consistent in turning diamonds in the rough into great players. The huge debt comes in part from the stadiums built for the Euro 2004, and from the fact that borrowing was relatively cheap until the crisis. Nowadays, with borrowing costs going up, Portuguese clubs are forced to deleverage and actually present operating profits to remain viable. | ||

Nowadays, with borrowing costs going up, Portuguese clubs are forced to deleverage and actually present operating profits to remain viable. while it is certainly true that benfica and porto have some fantastic scouting, they (and the whole portuguese league) have the huge advantage that they offer talents from brazil an environment that speaks their language. due to this language advantage over non-portuguese speaking countries, the portuguese clubs have it much easier to get young brazilian talents accustomed to european football. benfica and porto just get the greatest talents from brazil as they are the top-dogs of the portuguese league... but they are nonetheless doing a marvellous job, dont get me wrong. | ||
