I just feel that you PL followers and me have a very different opinion when it comes to what profile a defender or a GK should have to be considered 'good'. In my opinion, only Cech in the Premier League is better than Valdés, but I guess for you there must be at least 10 better than him...

Valdes does have some strengths that other keepers lack. His command of the area, ability in one on ones, and speed seem to be significant. But I can't say that he pokes his head above the aforementioned keepers in many categories without being beaten by them in others.

I guess Valdés will always be remembered for his silly mistakes and never for his huge saves like in the 2006 CL finals or his semi finals and final of 2009, or his 5 Zamora trophies, or... As I said, you'll probably come out with 10 or more GK better than Valdés and you did, congratz you made my point.

It's true that I have to work off speculation because there aren't many games where you can say Valdes 'saved' barca because they almost never need saving lol. Cech saves Chelsea about 10 times a season lol. Zamora trophy is a pointless award that shouldn't mean anything. It should be the ratio of shots on target to goals conceded. BTW I might even personally place Reina above Cech. He just saves things he has no right to all the time and he's built like a brick shithouse. A very physically capable keeper but also very agile with a great football brain. Oh yeah I forgot Joe Hart and Sczesny.

Yeah I said it, Cech is better than Valdés. The ratio shots on target/goals conceded is really bad. As previously mentionned in another discussion on Barcelona's defenders, the shots received by Barcelona are far more lethal because of the way the team plays; it will always be a very favorable situation for the opposing team, most of the time outnumbering Barca's back line, and often 1 on 1 with Valdés. In the EPL players also tend to shoot a lot more from a medium-long distance, and that kind of shot cannot be considered as real threats excepted for missils like Pogba shots of last night. Valdés CANNOT shine in this team. He get in these situations I mentionned where he has few chances to save the goal. The corner kicks are also really difficult to deal with because besides Puyol and Piqué (Busquets isn't even good with his head), nobdy in Barcelona can compete in the air, so he's often conceding goals in these situations or during free kicks for the same reason. Another difficulty is to stay focused during a game where your team controls the ball the whole game... I'm not saying he's the best by any means, many GKs are better than him like Buffon, Casillas, Neuer or Cech. But in Barcelona's playstyle he his the best, and I think it's too easy to say he's bad when he has no opportunity to shine. Next year, he'll probably end up in an english team and we might see what he's really worth.

About that, I agree with you on the fact that the overall quality of GKs in the EPL is great, but I think it's not specific to the EPL. Right now even in Spain, France, Germany and Italy (and probably more leagues) there are many many great goalkeepers. It seems that the average level of GKs these last years has really improved. In France for example, GKs are MVP for maybe 30% or 40% of the games, that's due to the poor attacking level of French teams but also the great quality of our GKs. Right now I can't think of a good team in Europe having a bad GK, which happened a lot in the past.

Casillas had many of his best moments in the Spanish national team.

This is some pretty good research which shows how over the past 5 years the EPL has had more accurate shooting but a lower ratio of shots on target to goals. This may be because of people taking more long shots or it may be because the keepers are in general of a very high standard. I think it's a combination of the two.

Hell the backup to Chelsea is in the 3rd place team of the liga. Athletico is the 2nd place team. They are 7 points above Real madrid. Anyway, some stats about Athletico. They have got 18 consecutive wins in their stadium. They haven't received any goal in their stadium in their last 10 matches.

Its just the matter of day in day out goalkeeping where he doesnt get to do shit, Casillas on the other hand does.

Transfer News! Greece international Vasilis Torosidis has confirmed he has no intention of signing a new contract at Olympiakos and plans to move abroad. The versatile 27-year-old is reportedly a target for Fulham. Lee Camp has been informed by Nottingham Forest that he is free to leave the City Ground, and Sky Sports understands that he is close to sealing a switch to Norwich. Camp is believed to be heading for a medical at Carrow Road before penning a deal until the end of the season. Liverpool Echo claim Inter Milan's Philippe Coutinho will soon be signing for Brendan Rodgers. According to L’Equipe, Schalke are set to make a €7 million offer to sign Michel Bastos from Lyon in the next few days. The 29-year-old Brazilian winger is under contract until 2015 but the French club are hoping to reduce their wage bill. Yann M'Vila looks to have played his last game for Rennes, the club have admitted. A host of clubs including Queens Park Rangers, Fulham, Reading and Tottenham are understood to be keen on luring the France international to the Premier League. The Guardian believes that AC Milan and Manchester City are getting close to agreeing a deal for Mario Balotelli. An interesting line from the Daily Mail suggests that QPR could make a shock move for Florent Malouda - who is yet to feature for Chelsea this term. DONE DEAL: Galatasaray have confirmed they have agreed a deal to sign Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan.
