News Champions League May Become A 64 Team Tournmanet & No Europa League European football's governing body Uefa is considering ditching the Europa League in favour of extending the Champions League from 32 to 64 teams. It means seven English clubs and five Scottish teams could qualify for European football's elite competition. Source Posted in both Threads in case others don't see

Also, Liverpool both won the competition from finishing 4th in the league the previous year and they would not of even been in it years ago for finishing that low. I do like the idea of more teams getting money, but i think we will start seeing more "fluke wins". Teams who finish 5/6/7th in their leagues getting to semi finals/finals and even winning the competition because "they had a good run" i think diminishes the value of the tournament. Look at the Europa league now for proof, teams who finish 3rd in the Champions League should walk that competition, but they don't. Man Utd and Man City arguably had the best teams/squads in that competition last season and both got beaten, United by Bilbao, who right now are very poor La Liga side, and City by Sporting Lisbon who are an average Portuguese team. No one really cares for the Europa League because the big teams are not in it? If the final was Man Utd vs Man City which it arguably should of been (on paper i know) then it would of probably got a lot of viewers. This is how i would do it (posted in champs league thread too) Champions League - 1st 2nd from Spanish/English/Italian/German/Dutch/French/Portuguese/Russian leagues - other leagues go into qualifiers. Then a straight knock out competition with seeds based on leagues for the first time. Then that is the elite of the elite imo. Uefa Cup 2.0 - 3/4/5 of the elite leagues wrote above go straight into group stage, then qualifiers for the other leagues. Then they go into a knock out competition too. Super Cup - Winner of each competition plays eachother for a chance to move onto the Club World Cup (makes more of a meaning to this competition then too) That is how i would do it. With less teams playing in the champions league, it should mean that tuesday could be champions league night, and weds uefa cup night. meaning less stress of fixture blockage too.

Then have a Europa cup for the others The top 20clubs in Europe dream about an european league (closed would be perfect but they don't even bother to claim that :D) but for everyone else it's a slow death so it's no going to happen. Nobody will want your solution because it's a clear cut in the income of top football clubs and of the club of minor championships who play c1. btw the PL champion might go down with like 2points in 6match not sure if it's worth doing him any favor :D (or the Ligue 1 champion btw :p)

So for me I would just gladly accept this format: 1. Reduce top9 countries top flight competitors to 16 clubs (who has more than that) 2. Bottom 2 drops out from each domestic leagues. 3. League champions from each top9 countries gets spot to Champions League 4. Countries outside of top9 (cup winner is allowed to enter too) enters Europa Cup where champion is granted spot to Champions League. 5. Champions League is round robin and total 18 games (home/away) for each team. 6. Most points after season is over is crowned as Champion of Europe. 7. Bottom of Champions League country drops out and is being replaced by Europa cup winner. Only problem is how to allocate country points, aka how to get top9 countries.

But if they really make it for 64 teams, they should change the name as someone mentioned earlier, I mean it wouldn't be Champions League, more like Europe League/Cup.

For me knock-out football is crap compared with league football - because there's no need to try to win. That's why you get rubbish defensive teams like Chelsea/Inter winning it. You can't win the premiership (or any other league) if you can't attack well. You're gonna get lots of draws and worse teams are going to pick you off away from home. If the champions league actually was a league it would be WAY more exciting and you would have great matches between the top teams every year. I don't agree that there is a money issue here. A league like that would draw WAY more viewers and more money overall. Top teams would make so much money from the tickets you could spread the TV rights out among all the lesser teams and everyone would end up better off.

Btw Portugal is in front of France in the Uefa Ranking, altough by the end of the year we'll probably be behind. Calling Ligue 1 a top 5 and leaving Portugal out doesn't show a lot of knowledge. I know that the french league is CLEARLY better than the Portuguese. But we're talkin about TOP clubs here, and you can't leave Porto and Benfica out to have montpellier, or marseille, or even Lyon...
