Evil Geniuses is hiring full-time (and part-time) web developers and web designers.

Since you’re reading this on TL.net, you most likely know who we are and what we do. But in case you don’t, we are Evil Geniuses; a fast-moving, highly-skilled new media agency which works with technology and other consumer brands interested in advertising to and engaging video gamers.

We’ve worked with Monster Energy, Intel Corporation, Kingston Technology, Anheuser-Busch, SkullCandy, Papa John’s, and many others on projects ranging from the design and development of digital marketing campaigns, to executing live event activations for tradeshows, to producing online gaming shows and tournaments.

We’re a fast growing company which has been featured in the New York Times, Forbes, CPU Magazine, Game Informer, and more publications than we can remember. But this is all a fancy way of saying we do a lot of cool stuff online which is viewed by millions of gamers each month.

Okay, that’s who we are, but here’s who we need.

The truth is we’re now gaining new clients so regularly that we can’t keep up, and in order to do so we need to increase our manpower substantially. So, we’re looking for US-based web developers and web designers who are eager to work within a highly creative environment of progressive people on projects which are just flat-out fun to create.

You’ll be given a supportive team of colleagues eager to make sure you have the freedom you need to do things the right way. We are constantly pushing each other and ourselves so we will expect no less from you. We want people who are aggressive in learning new technologies and techniques for fun, and also when projects demand it. We’ll give you projects which are exciting and fun, but which will test your skills.

And while we love people who aren’t gamers, we love gamers much more. Yes, that’s a cool thing called “favoritism,” folks! Given our projects are almost always gaming related, you better love gaming! And be engaged. Immerse yourself in the company, the gaming culture, and in your projects. We want people who understand what it means to embrace the opportunities they’ve been given.

Now for the nitty-gritty…

Web Developer
  • Experience developing in a Linux server environment (PHP, Ruby, Python, and/or JavaScript – node.)
  • Experience with front-end web technologies and methodologies, such as: HTML, CSS, Unobtrusive JavaScript, web standards and accessibility
  • Experience with a variety of transport technologies and methodologies, such as: REST, JSON, XML, etc.
  • Experience using internationalization and localization in your given programming language(s) and respective frameworks
  • Experience with Git or Mercurial SCM. We might accept SVN users, but be ready to explain yourself
  • Capable of developing custom backend solutions as well as leveraging existing third-party packages
  • Ability to understand why Warhounds were not a good unit to balance the game

Web Dev Bonus Points
  • Design-pattern informed software design and not just the trendy ones
  • Open-source contributor (show us your street cred)
  • Mobile development experience (native, mobile-web and/or cross-compiled)

Web Designer
  • Expert knowledge of CSS/HTML/JavaScript as it pertains to design
  • Experience with web usability, browser compatibility, and optimal site architecture practices
  • Experience working with mock-ups and basic layout concepts as design foundations
  • Expert knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign (Flash / Fireworks are a plus)
  • Strong time management and communication skills
  • Strong understanding of new web technologies, social media, and their capabilities
  • Ability to work with team of creative thinkers
  • Inability to produce Widow Mines, play as Phantom Lancer, or think Zed is underpowered

Web Designer Bonus Points
  • Have experience with product marketing, packaging, and UI design
  • Expect revisions to your work; don’t assume your work is perfect
  • Never stop learning; be someone who continues to improve

And now onto the treasure boxes that you’ll want to open…
  • We’re interested in hiring for both part-time and full-time positions
  • Salary will all be discussed privately
  • Being local to San Francisco is a plus, but not required
  • Having a wide knowledge of game genres and competitive formats is useful

Ok! Ok! How do I apply?
Please submit all resumes with updated portfolios to apply@myeg.net using subject line “<Web Developer / Web Designer > Application – <Your Full Name>”.

Other than that, you’re all set. We’re excited to post this job listing to the very community which has been so supportive of Evil Geniuses and the initiatives we’ve run over the past decade. Adding new faces to our company family is something we’re always eager to do when we can, so we encourage anyone even slightly interested to apply!

Thank you, and we’ll talk to you soon!
Evil Geniuses

Awesome to see EG actively pursuing new hires. Purely from the outside looking in, the staff/management there simply has to be stretched incredibly thin lately with everything going on..especially in development and design, given that is a necessity in almost everything that is done. Good luck boys!

We're open to non-US, but we prefer US simply because of timezones and availability. Submit your application and we'll take a look regardless

Okay i can check 95% of the required skills even if its 2 jobs... the 5% im used to Subversion at best, and even worse we have cvs in the office for the legacy bnecause chef choose to stick with it aaaand im not us based + sucking foreigner english. But seriously thats a bunch of killer requirements for, i guess, a little money you get you'd get anywhere else ;...; So lets say you get a promoted fresh university guy with some good projects he made and you pay 40.000€ a year. Id be interested what they pay for the love of esports

Happy with my job right now but love the qualifications for the web dev position. "We might accept SVN users, but be ready to explain yourself" gave me a laugh. I'm sure you guys will get some good applicants, hope the fact that you'd be working for the esports Yankees doesn't stop folks here from applying :p

Seriously though looks like a great job, I'm sure working for EG is fun.

Being local to San Francisco is a plus, but not required

I think anyway France is too much. Too much hours more, too much €/$ for the plane, too much accent when I speak english.. huhu.

I loved to try but I need now an internship, not a full job and I don't think I could have a chance. Perhaps back in 2 years, but I'll prefer blizzard (Web/game Dev/design studies for me ^^) :p

Glhf for guys who'll try

None at all! Pretty easy to teach yourself. Plenty of websites out there to learn from -- Nettuts, Webtuts, Smashing Magazine, websites like those are great resources. Not too hard to get up and running on your own, and you save the money of going through a college that typically is a couple years behind current trends.

Job ads pretty much always look intimitating. The hardest part is getting the experience tbh(well assuming you are decently smart), the rest comes if you are motivated and want to learn.

I'm a freshman in college doing half of that haha. It just depends on when you start and what you do. I've only really had a year dedicated to learning programming.

Do you think it will be ok to telecommute despite time difference?

I live in canada...

I'm in high school, but I have experience will all of the above as well as .NET (unfortunately) + work experience at a company where I was a developer.

I can definitely satisfy part time requirements.
I think I will submit my resume anyways

Thanks

"Experience with Git or Mercurial SCM. We might accept SVN users, but be ready to explain yourself"

Haha love this. I love git and I'm so glad many organisations are starting to make the transition.

I am just about to finish a contract. I am definitely going to inquire, I'd love to be a web developer for an esports organisation. However I would need to inquire about moving to the US hopefully they'd let me work on a visa. Also the pay matters haha.

I think my resume would definitely allow me to get in if I did live in the US already, I'm just hoping its that good that I can get a trip to the US. I have extensive experience in almost every web-development language, TDD/BDD, teaching Agile/Continous-Delivery to large organisations, setting up servers for large organisations, front-end design for smaller contracts, and understand server-side-MVC combined with client-side-MVC and such web design patterns on the webdev aspects.

There's an enormous difference between "doing it" and doing it well/properly. The former is simple, the latter will take many years regardless of your innate ability. If you don't already have a reasonable portfolio/pedigree, I'd be surprised if they'd consider you. If you're the one in ~50K that just transcends the experience prerequisite and is just insanely gifted, you're almost certainly not going to be working for Evil Geniuses anyway.

Surprisingly high requirements for a simple site. Currently they dont' use any JS or CSS frameworks (other than jquery that everyone uses), so no MVC type js like backbone/ember, and no responsive css like foundation. They probably want to hire someone who can just totally transform the site. And web services? Currently I can't imagine too much database stuff going around there .. (player bios, sponsors... perhaps). Anyway I think there might just be some closet rockstar developer that lurks the forums here.

"Open-source contributor (show us your street cred)"

^- Best way to start a portfolio is contributing to your favorite OSS projects. It will get noticed.

Open source isn't just a good way to build a portfolio; it is also an excellent way to improve your skills and meet cool people! I think you'd be surprised at how useful those connections can be when you are looking for jobs. Software is about people as much as code, open source software even more so.

I second this. Graylin is extremely active, but I bet he welcomes any help.

Thanks for the shoutout Imbu, Fyrn. I am always looking for both technical and non-technical contributors; software isn't all about code! Contact me if interested

But in case you don’t, we are Evil Geniuses; a fast-moving, highly-skilled new media agency which works with technology and other consumer brands interested in advertising to and engaging video gamers.

How was there no mention of the word 'e-sport' in this sentence?

They didn't tell you that bachelor or masters in financial economics don't mean shit unless its from Ivy League University or Oxford or... you get the point. I have a bachelor and masters in finance, right now at my 3rd year of PhD in Agricultural Economics. Planning on getting a second PhD in Economic Theory in another country (if I successfully publish my research). Then spend a couple of years to get FRM or CFA. By that time, as I hit my 40s, I will be a competitive financial economist on the global market. This shit is not for everybody because you need to invest a huge amount of capital and time, and also make a lot of sacrifices. It is kind of bad that they don't tell you this when you are a kid applying to a college for the first time without proper guidance. Trust me, professors, university staff, they all know it, they just trick you into it. These crooks don't make it to Wall Street so they scam children.

In all seriousness though, would love to apply, but I'm going to school for CSS (software design) and only know frontend web stuff, plus still have a year of school left good to see them expanding though, EG is a great organization :D

Are you sure? Even in old over-regulated Germany, you are allowed to work outside of your main job, only limited by special agreements in your work contract, which usually exclude you from working for competition, or in anything where you could get into trouble with the law or regulations.

It's perfectly legal. And you can make a shit ton of money doing it because you actually have some great fiscal advantages if you are already employed and decide to be self employed on the side. Check one of those two links for the basics (dutch and french).
