Support TeamLiquid by ordering Papa John's pizza and unlock Esports Tiers! Win free TeamLiquid mousepads, Liquid shirts, and pizza parties! All this and more if you sell your soul for pizza.
There comes a time in every fan's life where he realizes that he must eat pizza for the good of the realm. This is that time. We all want to see more mainstream companies invest in esports. "We have the numbers! - we're bigger than some of that stuff on TV!"
These are thoughts that you may have likely had at one time or another. This week, we will have an opportunity to introduce another mainstream company to esports. EG, Liquid, and ROOT, alongside OneMoreGame.TV and the DotA 2 League, will be working with Papa John's this week to show them what our teams and fans can do.
The process is pretty simple. Papa John's will be offering 50% off its pizzas this week to esports fans located in the United States. Alongside this discount, there is a progress counter (tied to the number of times the discount has been used) that will unlock goals at certain stages. We will be giving away special prizes like Liquid mousepads and unreleased Liquid team shirts, with a final goal of a pizza party at an upcoming North American live event.
You can read more about these goals at pizza.gg. If you go through pizza.gg click on one of the icons to be redirected to the Papa John's website (choose wisely - whomever you click on will get credit for referring you). Click on "Order Now" and enter Promo Code "PIZZAGG" at the top of the page.
We don't want you to eat till you're sick, but if you feel like eating a pizza (or two or three or ten) this week, please consider using Papa John's and help us show them what we can do!
For those that live outside the United States or want to help but don't particularly want to eat pizza themselves, you can order pizza for your friends in the United States, because we really need the extra food here. Also feel free to instruct them to write ESPORTS on the box.
guhhh I don't eat pizza anymore in my efforts to get healthier
Maybe I'll indulge this weekend.
But I know that if this goes into a long-term partnership of some sorts there are lots of people who play mafia at events, and we usually get many pizzas
oh knows they dont offer delivery for meh. What's the process for instore take-out (in my opinion this should show a much greater level of commitment--I would go to their stores over ordering the much easier Dominos...) Hear that? a fat nerd willing to go to the store just to support esports.

you can order and cancel**, but still counts the code
**don't actually do this, but I had a friend whose roommate worked at papa johns and to get free pizza would put in an order right when his friend was about to get off shift/close, cancel the order after sufficient time for it to be well underway/started, and said employee would just take it home since otherwise it would go in the trash. Only a couple times I'm sure he was a good employee and not just getting free pizzas all the time
My little bro is having a big high school graduation party this week and he's going to have pizza there. Guess its going to be from PapaJohns. How can we say no to 50% off pizzas and supporting E-sports at the same time?

I dislike Mr. Papa John. (Largely because he's very much a non-thetans kindof guy, and kinda political.) But Papa Johns, as a company, has been fairly okay.
And dammit, they have good pizza and breadsticks.
TL, you're not hurting eSports, but you may be dealing a blow to my waistline.
FOR ESPORTS AND PIZZA!! gg no re, dinner tonight. Maybe tomorrow night. And this weekend.
I looked at the menu and there is not one thing that is even remotly a pizza.
If you go to Napoli and order a BBQ Chicken Bacon they might punch you in the face right away. If you are lucky. If not they will call the mafia and you will end up at the ground of the next ocean. After you got punched in the face. Twice.
But hey they support eSports so fuck that and buy pizza! Or whatever they call pizza. I mean i would never do it because my cholesterol would be over 9000 just looking at that thing. But hey maybe i´m wrong and its awesome because as a matter of fact i have never tryied or heared of that thing but maybe that is because i live in Germany where you can buy a "real" pizza for arround 10 $. Btw how expensive are these things i couldnt find prizes on their webside.
to cut a long story short: American pizza should be illegal but supporting eSports is always awesome!.
I know esports needs all the money it can get but I disagree with this move by TL.
I've been a member here for ten years but this is the first time I think TL has made a mistake in regards to a sponsor. Papa John is not a company that should be promoted. They've been cutting the working time of the employees just to have them being denied proper healthcare.
Papa John's come to Europe and we will support the shit out of you!! So much love for getting involved in e-sports!! we all welcome you with open arms and full bellies!!!

Italian here, I agree with you but as far as i've seen these are the standard American Pizzas. Here in Italy it's pretty common to eat a pizza without so many things like a Margherita (the original one with only mozzarella, tomato and oregano) but i've never seen it in a American menu (maybe one time).
But who cares? I can't buy them here but i'm happy with the fact they support E-sport

I hate 50% off deals too. Goddamn, wish they would just charge 150% for their shit instead. I also throw my money into the sewers regularily.
Great partnership! I've always wondered why TL didn't do something like this sooner. google ads usually don't make much revenue. I will order a slice this week.
I'm really torn. The CEO being such an vocal and disingenuous jerk over political matters means I've refused to get their not bad pizza for like 2 years. But this may just be enough to at least call time out over the boycott...

Some people like to complain about nothing.
I see working with an established, huge pizza company that's in many countries around the world, and see progress in eSports.
This guy looks and sees TL and PJ trying to dupe us out of our money.
I mean hell even if this did nothing and the Esports scene benefitted in no way, shape or form from this, you still get a goddamnned tasty pizza at a bargain bucket rate...
Nice, the 50% off deal is great, they do it the day after local sports teams win, but in Minnesota that can be few and far between. I'll definitely check this out, it's hard to beat a large pizza with like 8 toppings for $10.

Papa John's always has a 50% coupon code floating around. Even though I never order from them I have friends who do and let them know. And yes this code will spread if it's the only 50% off code during this time. I don't mind TL doing this partnership(money is money) but I just don't agree with Papa John's open business practices and have stayed away from them for years. Sad to think that TL's gain will also be Papa John's gain as well.

even better for ESPORTS :D
TOO MUCH SENSE! But I'm sure the marketing team and Papa John's has factored in a certain amount percent for imposters.
awesome i usually never ever get PJ because with delivery its kind of expensive then going up the street to a local pizza place but with 50% discount and supporting esports at same time you can def count me in
Nice! I always take advantage of these deals even when they aren't related to esports. It's one of the few times I get to order a pizza with a bajillion toppings and it still be cheap.
Note: Papa Johns tastes like ass if you put on 9 toppings. Not recommended. 5-6 is the sweet spot before it starts tasting like shit. Yes, they did warn me, I just didn't care. Same goes for Dominos.

There definitely isn't always one floating around. I mean, it's not exactly rare for them to have them out, but the greater majority of the time there isn't one. They aren't very profitable when people use them, it's more to attract customer bases or regain lost customers. I'd say less than 10% of the time they have one of these going on, although there might be other good deals like when they had $9 unlimited toppings large pizzas. But 50% coupon code is def one of the better and rarer ones that come out.
And yeah, it will definitely spread, because it'll get posted on retailmenot and all the other coupon sites. I check them everytime I order something just in case... they're fairly good at getting them from experience.
Open shop in Poland and I will eat lunch there every now and then... but seriously out of EU they have shops in Portugal, Ireland and UK. Also in Ukraine and Russia...

It's not just to attract old customers, it's mostly a marketing exploration tool. You analyze the impact that the promo code generates, adjust for the rate of dissipation of information to the non-targeted demographic (non-esports people/people who hear from word of mouth) and papa johns can determine the true marketing potential in the e-sports industry.
EDIT: Also a lot of pizza snobs in this thread it seems -_-
ugh; its a 30 minute drive to the nearest Papa Johns..... I guess I'm going to have to make the drive though lol. So cool seeing a NFL sponsor also sponsoring E-Sports!
I wonder what the actual goals are. How many millions of pizzas do we need to eat!?
You don't have to agree with a musician's politics to enjoy their music or an actor, their movies. Are politics so divisive to some that it prevents them from enjoying something that they might otherwise? Anyways, I'll be ordering some 'pizza' (quoted for you pizza snobs) this week.
I assume they do not send pizza over the atlantic. If they did I would be super impressed. If it was still warm upon arrival I would be even more impressed
fucking hell... why isn't this offer here in denmark... are you kidding me.. i would live off pizza for the entire week, both for the discount but mostly to support e-sports!
I'm allergic to pizza (gluten allergy) and I'm still going to order a pizza just because of how awesome this is. Maybe they even have gluten-free options!
Just a bit sad that i can't do much with it as an european. Don't know anybody in the US, so can't send a pizza either, and there's not even a guestbook or something where you can say how much you like this idea even if you can't participate.

Comes out to $7.16 if you go to the store and pick it up yourself. I haven't had a pizza delivered in years.
Sounds like an awesome opportunity for any of our American buddies. I wish that I could take advantage of it. If this does really well, it could lead to more in the future I hope
If I was in college, I would support by eating PJ pizza everyday. However, now that I'm back home, I have no incentive to order since there's a pizzeria down the block.
They are the only pizza place that doesn't deliver to me, I guess over 2 miles and I'm out of range (I am 3 miles away). Otherwise, I would gladly support. ^_-

Just ordered Papa John's for the first time ever. I had to drive to another town and pick it up cause there isn't one here but it was worth it, good pizza and supporting esports.
So I got a buffalo chicken pie and it came out to 9.76, of course you cant get delivery until 10$ so i added a ranch dressing for 50cents lol. Came like ten minutes ago pretty good deal. esportsssss
I'm gonna order some papa johns to get my e-sports meter up LOL, because that is truly the only important part of life. My life is henceforth of the same value as that meter.
Wow, just had pizza today but from Pizza Hut. If I had known about this, I'd have gotten it from Papa John's Oh well, there is always the rest of the week >_<
So my friends and I are having a get-together later this week, and this sounds like a great way to support e-sports and satisfy the munchies at the same time. I didn't see anything in the first few pages of this thread; how long is this offer going to last?

Well they should invest in something like this. Watching an esports tourney is like watching a regular sporting event. And what do people in the US usually eat while watching sporting events from home pizza!! Im glad big companies getting involved there is lots of customers that would support them. Glad this is happening this week gonna take advantage of this not just to watch Code S and AM Ro16 but also NBA playoff and the UEFA champions.

Sorry- but I'll stay with making my own pizza store-bought or Little Ceasars which is about 5 minutes closer than this towns' Papa John's. =-(
(Or WILL I get a prize for sure, if I get my Meter up?) Am I understanding this correctly? =-/
The meter is in general for everyone. Once it hits the tier in which teamliquid/other team gives out shirts/mousepads/etc, it will be done through random giveaway. The meter isn't an individual thing. Also, you probably shouldn't be in it for the prizes anyway. Support the esports scene!
If this was Chiptole or Baja Fresh or Stone Oven I would be the biggest supporter of this. With the sedentary lifestyle most gamers have, pizza consumption should be deterred in favor of healthier alternatives.
However, I'm glad that such a mainstream company has a willingness to support the scene.

I bet they'd be better off doing this during a big tournament weekend instead of this timing, though I'm not up to date on all tournies so there may be on coming up soon.

yeah i'm wondering the same thing,
you get 50% off - thats the sickest deal for a pizza i've ever seen in my life you support e-sports - in the best of ways IMO you get to eat pizza - win win win
right now it says there are over 8000 people active on TL, of those lets say 50% is US... So 4000 pizza's should be ordered right now...
COME ON PEOPLE, LETS GET THAT E-SPORTS METER MOVING !!!
Well, this would be the first time I feel really disappointed with Team Liquid. I've always assumed they hold both themselves and the people they do business with to a higher standard.
Hopefully it's mostly lack of cultural awareness by Nazgul & co, but it's deeply disappointing nevertheless.

I think its a stereotype well placed, if you ask me. If you're health conscious then thats fine, but it seems reasonable enough to suggest that "lots of gamers probably like pizza, therefore pizza and games should go well together". Although you definitely could apply similar logic to cigarettes, it just doesn't have that same click as pizza + games (a classic).
Meanwhile I'm starving because I can't be fucked to pay FULL price for a pizza, wheres my 50% off?
I wouldn't even if I could. Papa John's is the kind of corporation I don't want to see mentioned alongside e-sports, ever. Big miss from TL right here.

1) He's killing esports because he doesn't like an owner's "own opinions."
2) He should leave because of those opinions.
Do you understand exactly how hypocritical and just plain jackassed you sound right now?
I'm willing to overlook a lot of what the asshole Papa John's CEO has said AND the fact that their pizza is overpriced for hte shit it is and order a pizza or two, but I can't really understand the sheer stupid that's poured into defending companies when they say something/take a stance that's rather inflammatory or just plain short-sighted. You sound a lot like the "OMG, gay people hate Chik-Fil-A for calling gays heathens" people who in the same breath declared that liberals were un-American for boycotting them.
Good on TL/EG/Root on getting this promo chance, hope it works out. Sad it couldn't be with someone else though.

I'm sadly allergic to milk proteins and sause. I'm a sad panda when it comes to pizza QQ.
I was also wondering about that. I want to see what tier they are on so i can cheer on everyone! So one question. Depending on the tier we are up to, EG/ROOT/TL do all the tier up to the one that it's on? Or are they only going to do the tier that it is set on?

I have family with allergi to milk protein as well, and it's possible to make a decent pizza without it. The dough is easy anough, but obviously you can't use regular cheese. It will still be miles better than anything you can buy from a fast food pizza chain though.
I'm just spitballing here, but you know, if you want to buy pizzas and somehow help those who were hurt in the Oklahoma tornado disaster, I bet we can find a shelter in that area and/or a Papa John's, where people can order pizzas and have it delivered there. Or maybe homeless shelters in different areas that would certainly never turned down free food (I imagine).
If people are interested in doing that, I can spend some time today calling around to a few places to see if they would accept free pizzas from the internet.

There was a post on reddit from EG.LectR that said the numbers/tier progress would be updated later today. He implied that the volume so far was huge by saying 'we need to create more tiers' or something to that effect. Would be nice if the progress was realtime, but I doubt that realistic. They (EG/TL/Root) probably get a daily update from PJ and have to manually edit the progress bars.
An idea occurred to me yesterday, I know there are either no Poppa Johns in europe or they just aren't doing the offer there but if you really want to support e-sports and want to do a selfless good deed you could look up a homeless shelter in the united states and order a 1/2 priced pizza to be sent there...

Glad to hear this, I was checking the progress bar every now and then and I can't believe that we are still on Tier 1 -.-

Wow that, is a really good idea
An even better idea would be to donate half the money to a homeless shelter and use the other half to sibscribe to a stream or buy some merchandize from a team.
If you aren't even gonna eat the pizza there is no need to drag Papa John's into this

of course there's a reason to drag papa john's into this, it's their promotion

I don't need to critical think to recognize complainers and negativity. If this debate isn't intellectually stimulating enough for you, why don't you take your complaints to Papa John's...or better yet find yourself a forum full of like-minded individuals who like nothing better than to complain and squabble.. oh wait.. lol I'm done with this thread. got pizza to eat - in the name of eSports.
With the apparent pizza explosion, I have a few questions for Nazgul: now what? 1 day into this, I'm pleasantly surprised to see how successful this community event is turning into and excited to see TLO might actually switch with iNcontroL (though I hope he won't be cursed). Was this something purely done to get fans cheap pizza or are there additional benefits for the teams or individual players? What do TL, EG and ROOT stand to gain? Will there be a more permanent sponsorship deal in the works? Is there the impression PJ was looking to see if they should integrate further into tournaments?
Haha only one day into this and we have 4/10 bars complete. I would love to know how many pizzas actually need to be ordered to fill the bar. Kind of ambiguous.
I think this is just a ruse to temporarily boost sales. How can someone with such poor PR for being bad to his employees sponsor a team? Sponsor multiple teams? Nice joke.
May be good for the eSports wallets but it doesn't do our public image any favours. 'Gamers eat ridiculous amounts of takeaway food to show their spirit!'
What you want to do is make a co-op effort with some fitness company. 40% off fitness benches for nerds. Has the added bonus that if the sponsorship ever falls through the nerds will be so shredded they can take money by right of conquest.
Doing my part for ESports and a full belly: got a double bacon, six cheese on my lunch break at work today. Gonna finish it when I get home after work.

You're being too negative, bro. Eat that pizza and smile.

This x 100000000. I support eSports all the time (financially and otherwise) but I do draw the line at greedy, loathsome, soulless corporate scum like the owner and face of Papa John's.
I am not anti-capitalism. I'm happily employed for a company that pays me well and respects/protects me. Read about the owner's policies, political stances, agendas, etc., and then decide if you can still stomach his (fucking horrendous) pizza.
I will support eSports to the day I die. I will not support Papa John's.
Not trying to be Debbie Downer but in the midst of all this joyful consumption, this point does need to be raised.

Your killing eSports. Get out of the scene. peace. Papa Johns pizza is decent. The owner's policies and stances/agendas?? shit i forgot you can't own a pizza company and have your own opinions.
They may be sponsoring my favorite thing soon..... Sounds like a good policy to me, also ill buy some pizza cuz its pretty good and 50% off.. not to mention its for eSports. If you don't like papa johns.. fine... but seriously.. papa johns is bad because x y z.. go hate monger somewhere else.
edit: 50% off.. Pizza... eSports... and you have a problem with it LMFAOLOLO
ps. cold eSports sponsoring pizza and alcohol while im watching GSL ftw
Wait.
Nope. killing eSports by perpetuating negativity. Who cares what the owners beliefs are? Who cares that you don't want to buy them? keep it out of TL. Be excited or move along. No need to sit around and crap on a good thing.
Wow...this is frankly just a weird mentality to have...we must all praise the great papa john and never doubt him! dissidents will be exiled!
Son, there's a difference between not liking negativity and being a papa john zealot. You got quite the imagination.

bro, maybe you should eat some pizza... maybe some Papa Johns pizza? Support a little bit of eSports with a little bit of pizza? nah? ok.
Only one day and we're 4 tiers down? This is awesome! I was really hoping we'd at least get to 7/8, but at this rate we'll get to 10 easily! Should look really good for Papa Johns if we reach tier 10 before the week's even half way over =p
I'm confused by the tiers, do they give away everything randomly as they go or does the end of a tier mean no more prizes? I can't really be bothered to go out of my way to try some pizza I've never had unless I can tell myself it's for a reasonable cause: gambling for Dota couriers.
I feel that we are giving too much attention to Papa John's pizza. The players are spamming the advertisement on twitter and TL makes a big ass post for it. When it is a sponsor for a tournament it is ok, but when it is to buy the brand's product and maybe they will be interested in esport and make good events, it looks like they get a much better deal than us... Hats off to their marketing team. It is nice to have a big company getting interested in esport I know but we shouldn't be starving for it.
dam it, my delivery driver didn't give me a receipt cause it was cash, and when I asked him for it he said it was in his car and I didn't want ot make him walk back cause it was raining :/ God dam I have so many problems in life, don't know how I deal with it.

Pretty sure that "maybe they will be interested in esports" isn't the situation. I can't imagine all of this work and promotion by EG, Liquid, and Root, unless Papa Johns has already made promises to them if they hit certain sales.
This is still going on right? I tried to use the code and it didn't work... I called and the lady was nice enough to give me the promotion anyways. I just hope that it goes towards the promotion since i didn't order online.

Getting a company like this into e-sports is huge which is why everyone is pushing for this.

This is showing them how responsive and engaged the community is here. It will show them that marketing here in esports is cost efficient and effective. This is only going to open more doors to better things if it goes well.
Ordered mine tonight, but ironically pizzagg cost me more money than it would normally cost. If you check the left sidebar, their "Early Week Mania" special offer listed all large pizzas up to five toppings or specialty for 9.99 (Mon-Wed). Via pizzagg, my "The Works" large ended up being 10.90 with tax... one cent more than their sidebar special (10.89 with tax).

Yeah, well, it's a bit too cost efficient. It's like they throw us a bone and we instantly turn into the sleeziest of salesmen and most gullible of consumers, no matter the company or product.
The pizza spam over social media the last few days was at the level of penis enlargement mail spam. That door does not lead to better things.
Ive always ordered Papa Johns since forever, this just makes me love them more. For those hatin, this promo is meant for you to try their pizzas, if you dont like it..no one is forcing you to buy again. Papa J is a huge company, enough to be the main pizza sponsor of the superbowl.
It's great to have such a large, mainstream consumer company involved with esports. I hope they get a large turnout from the coupon so papa johns and other companies will be open to more sponsorships and partnerships in the future. Ordered a thin crust veggie and ham last night! Delicious.

Oh well, anything for esports!
That's odd as I got my "The Works" for $9.10 after tax.

Yeah, i'm not sure what you're doing wrong. I've already ordered twice, and after tax it was 7$ flat for a large cheese, and 8.50$ for a meat lovers. (Or whatever they call it.)

I don't know about you guys, but I'm most pumped for the EG/TL clan war. Maybe because I can't afford to go to any tournaments anytime soon, and EG.LoL isn't necessarily my "favorite" League team.
Anyway, I doubt it, but Papa Johns should pull a Valve and add more tiers. We beat them by a full 5 days. Seems to me like someone had too little faith. If this power can drive so many ill-fated pitchforks and emails, it sure as hell can order a few pizzas offline.

That means no one gets credit for directing you to the promotion, but Papa John's will still obviously see that the promotion was used.

Chillin. At least if it helps out the overall cause then that's the most important part I care about. Will try to order again use the appropriate picture.
I am a bit confused so are we automatically entered in the prize pool by the email we used to register on papa john's website?

It is, at least in Edmonton where I am... Honestly it has been the last place I would think to get a pizza until they did this. Also the Pizzagg offer wasn't available here anyway. :C
Look at that Papa Johns meter! Go e-sports! Yay Wish there was one by me, a pizza would go down so well right now. And what better deal could there be?
For those that live outside the United States or want to help but don't particularly want to eat pizza themselves, you can order pizza for your friends in the United States, because we really need the extra food here.
Poor and hungry US citizens need extra food, how sad (Trollface)

Really? Wow, that sucks man. Usually Papa Johns is pretty good. Granted it isn't nearly as good as the local Pizza I can get here in NY, but for something fast to feed the family at $10 per large (regular special), it is pretty good. Wonder if something was wrong with your local one..strange.

No ive been seeing this stuff everywhere like in dota 2 theres a item called satanic and here's the caption for the item "Immense power at the cost of your soul. "
I want nothing to do with anything like that even if its supposed to be a joke

Oh, Ok you are one of "those" christians. Might I interest you in a cup of Kool-aid and a pair of black nike's then?
The Pizza.gg website asks us to click on an icon before we order. Will we get to see the data on who got the most clicks? I'm curious how popular Machine is vs Incontrol, and that kind of thing.

I don't know where he is getting that information, as the papajohns site says good through tomorrow...the 27th...either trying to get people to order pizzas or just wasn't informed correctly and/or papajohns website is wrong:/
online thing wasn't working so i called and told them to make it with SC out of pepperonis. They said they would but they didnt so I just did it myself
really, really torn. glad it went well for TL, but i really wish that it could have been a different sponsor. aligning your own image with your sponsors image has more value in the long run, although this is a good burst of exposure. I can't help but feel that TL sold out, obviously a smart move regardless.

Some people don't agree with the founders political views, some people don't want a fatty food to be connected to gaming, and some people just don't like pizza.

These are all bit.ly links, so you can add a + sign at the end of the URL to see the statistics. iNcontroL's: https://bitly.com/11IMkO1 (18,354 total clicks) Machine's: https://bitly.com/10U6xyX (3,547 total clicks)

I'm sure this is not the number of pizzas ordered, since it monitors the number of times people followed these links. The real question is - was the number of pizzas ordered closer to 10% of the clicks, 1% or 0.1%? Since the total clicks is ~300k, this would translate to between 300 and 30000 pizzas. I can reasonably believe it was 3000, but I don't know about much more than that. It would be way more interesting to have real pizza numbers, but I don't think those will be as easy to get.
Don't want to get into a which game is better discussion here, but I'm frankly a bit shocked by the LOL numbers. I'm also pretty surprised that EG WOW got as much as EG Dota2 and EG fighting games. Maybe even more surprised that TLs SC2 division did worse than ROOTs, and that both were less than incontrol and demuslim on their own - could have believed Stephano and Huk being up there for EG. Maybe having a mug shot up is a better sell than just a team icon.
I'm not surprised at the EG-LoL numbers, because if you visit www.pizza.gg it's the first option in the list of participants. This pizza deal was posted on literally hundreds of deal sites (such as on slickdeals) and I could see many of those people clicking on the first selection just to get to the next page. Unfortunately placement holds weight in any voting system.
Glad this happened! Got some half off pizza and supported some esports. . .when are we going to see these tier prizes though? Idk about the gift stuff but where's my eating contest with machine?! I'm surprised I haven't seen anything about that stuff yet.
