The National eSports Event StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty 1v1 & 2v2 Tournament A Season 1.

The NE-SE organization has established a multitude of great features throughout the tournament and game web site for all players to enjoy. The NE-SE structure brings a real opportunity for all gamers to earn cash prizes competing in a StarCraft II tournament. With round by round cash prizes, finals competition in Las Vegas, a fully interactive web site Profile System, some of the largest prize pools in North America and more; we promise we are here for the betterment of eSports.

How it works

It is free to register for the website and get access to most of the site’s features, but to participate in the tournament there is a $20 Entry Fee for 1v1 and a $20 Entry Fee for 2v2 ($10 per player).

Upon registering for a tournament your name is entered into the pool of names with all other registered players. From there, 48 hours prior to game play starting on October 3rd, each player will be randomly funneled into one of the many NE-SE four person brackets. You will also receive an email at that time to inform you that the brackets have been uploaded and provide you with more information. If you beat your opponent in your bracket, you fill out a Winner’s Form and then you will be advanced onto the next stage of the bracket. If you defeat your next opponent you will have won that bracket and, by doing so, won the round.

Each player will have one week to complete both games in the round, if you win the first match of the round. Every round will start on Monday and end on Sunday, providing players with ample time to complete all matches casually. This also allows the NE-SE to be more involved with the community and specific/adaptable to every situation. Each tournament has six rounds, seven weeks of total game play, a one week break before the next tournament begins and there are four tournaments per NE-SE Season.

Round 1 :: $20
Round 2 :: $40
Round 3 :: $80
Round 4 :: $160
Round 5 :: $320
Round 6 :: $640

Total Prizes :: $1,260

Each Round in the NE-SE has a cash prize amount attached to it starting at $20 and doubling every round thereafter for 6 rounds. Once you have won a round, that prize is your claim even if you are eliminated in a future round. In Round 6, the tournament converts to a Round Robin format called the Final Fifty. In this round players will go head to head for two weeks in scheduled matches which will be displayed in a “delayed” live stream. The top four players or teams with the best records will win the round and as a result, win that tournament.
Total prizes to a tournament winner are:

• $1,200+ in cash prizes accumulated throughout all the rounds.
• Unlock the “Upload Picture” capability in your NE-SE Profile.
• A plus two guest list for an all-expense paid trip to Las Vegas to compete in Finals.
• NE-SE Finals :: 1st Place- $30,000 2nd Place- $15,000 3rd Place- $7,500.

As it stands right now each game up until the Final Fifty round of the tournament will be Single Elimination. We are still looking for more feedback regarding the style of the early rounds to determine a final decision by October 1st, 2011.

The last few threads brought it off to a rough start, but it seems like you're taking advice from the critics and no longer lashing back.
I have to say that I'm happy to see that your approach towards the community has matured greatly since I first heard of you. Keep it up and you guys will have a great tournament on your hands. I'll be following!

How are they funding this? I don't see any sponsors or anything on the team website.

Live in Vegas seems really cool though.

You also need to edit the ! away from the ne-se link, otherwise it'll give an error.

To reach Round6 with the "final fifty" you need ~51,000 players. This is very unlikely, so what happens if there are not enough players?

With enough players the payout is about 50% of the entry fees (including the finals).
Numbers for one of the four tournaments:
Total entry fees: 1,024,000 $
Total prizes: 498,560 $

Taking that much money for a "User profile" and "Profile Picture" looks greedy to me. A total of 2 million $ earned by 4 pure online tournaments with one final event that might even make money from streams, sponsors, HD-passes etc. is way to much in my opinion.
I do support every tournament that helps e-sports to grow and aims at bringing high level matches to the viewers, while allowing new players to join.
However, this still feels like a "how to make tons of money from e-sports"-tournament, which is why i will not support it.

But thats just me... Good luck to all the competitors!

I agree with JustAGame. This tournament just wreaks of "how can we make money using SC2". You cant just make money at the start. You need build your way up...and i can see you still have your LOTR Nazgul background for SC2, which is just another thing that tells me you dont get it.

Also if you had so much money to put into this why would you use z33k as your tournament organizers? make your own interface to host your tournaments...

First of all, I must say that this is a very ambitious and cool sounding event! But, I have several questions about your tournament that I am curious about and would greatly appreciate a response:

1 - Are you assuming that you will have a perfect multiple of 4 sign up for each tournament? The way the "mini - brackets" work would be totally unfair if this is not the case. If there are only 3 players in a mini bracket for example (which seems extremely likely), Players 1 and 2 play one game for a chance to play player 3? If this is the case, perhaps changing the rules so that all 3 players play each other rather than having the loser of the first match be eliminated would be better?

2 - Also, as JustAGame pointed out, you need approximately 51k participants for the tournament to work the way you desire it to. What happens if you get, say 5.1k participants instead? Will the prize pool and round structure still stay the same? Will some mini-brackets only have two or even just one player in them?

3 - The structure of the mini-brackets is also kind of bothersome. Lose once and you're out? What benefits do you see to this style as opposed to a more classic double elimination round-robin (which would be more typical of a 4 person player pool)? If the main concern is expediting running the pools, this could easily be taken care of by the tournament web site, requiring no extra work on your end.

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing your responses. Good luck with the event

Has Blizzard done research into whether or not the backers are legitimate? The initial announcements were extremely suspicious and the format doesn't seem viable at all. As this post is their proof of legitimacy and they are going to be taking people's money I wonder if they or the format were vetted.

Specifically, their format calls for either 6 rounds where 1/4 advances into a 50 player round robin, or sufficient 4 person rounds until 50 players remain (the specification is contradictory).

If its the former, 4^6 * 50 or 204,800 entries would be necessary to fill the bracket. This is several orders of magnitude larger than other entry fee competitions such as NASL Open brackets. Profits per competition
would be in excess of 2 million from total entry fees of ~4 million. This is the size of competition the schedule calls for (6 weeks + 2 week round robin with each 4 player round taking 7 days) and what is described on the payout table.

If its the latter, an entrant pool of 1000 (4 times as popular as NASL) would nearly result in losses from the prizes paid out for the final 50 alone (320 * 50 + 4*640 = 18560, 250 players getting their $20 bucks back and you're in red another 5000 regardless of other rounds).

Furthermore, a round robin of 50 over a 2 week period is not achievable.
"At 50 players ...a round robin setting. ...arranged matches for a two week time period."
A round robin of 50 competitors requires 50/2 *(50-1) matches. That comes out to 600 games or 42 to 43 games per day. That is also not something that could happen. Even if every game was 10 minutes long, that's still 7+ hours a day, every day, for all 50 players. Scheduling that would not be feasible.

Can we take this announcement as Blizzard's seal of approval on their legitimacy and that its safe to give them our money?

But then again, just my two cents. I do hope everything works out for this league, as it's really nice to see the community getting more involvement from cash prizes. Maybe we could possibly see some new blood in the SC2 pro scene from this event!

This was already discussed on the last thread. If they somehow got that many people to sign up, they would make money. However more likely is that the entry fees will not cover the prizes for the qualifiers + finals.

As for the final 50 (wishful thinking in terms of sign-ups I believe) it doesn't require you play every other player. Given that it requires 4 winners, you could have everyone play 10-20 games, and 4 overall winners would most likely come out. If these are BO1 instead of BO3, that's not too many games over a couple weeks.

It would be nice if they clarified the final-50 format, but I honestly doubt it will even come up.

Yea, that stuff has all been brought up before. I even made a nice little spreadsheet basically saying everything you did and was told: "That is now[sic] how the tournament system works at all". At which point the organizer mentioned that it was much simpler and that they have a picture in their office or something but we were never told how it was simpler. Still waiting on that.

Some clarification is certainly needed.

Can we get somebody to comment on the format issues raised?

talked w/ the owner, he seems like a pretty legit guy
he got you guys his blizzard license, he's updated the map pool
some people just dont want to believe in good things, who cares if he fucking makes money off of e-sports

if they pay out the prize, and pay for travel for the finalist, whooooo fucking cares if he puts some $$ in his pocket

ya, you'd love to see some more committed to prizepool in that sense, but shit.... let em make money if they can!
