One of the catch-22's of systemic oppression is that it'll kill you (/your people) slowly if you don't fight it, but fighting it will kill you faster. So you're saying that there's no way to stop it? Come on, we've come a long way. We used to oppress women, gay people, non white people, and non white people from any poorer ethnic groups, or anyone from other religious groups. Now we mostly limit our systemic oppression toward bronys teemo players and filthy casuals. Say what you want about going backwards in some respects or whatever, the overwhelming trend in civilised countries is toward general fairness. The countries that continue to be cunt-tries tend to enforce their cuntness with excessive guns and violence, or strong religious movements. (e.g muslim countries, christian countries when it comes to anti-gay rallies and such) I think it's fair to say education and free discourse combined with new generations of people less set in their beliefs tends to solve the problems if they are identified. On August 04 2015 07:38 TheHumanSensation wrote: Posts on the forum, regardless of whether or not they generate any discussion, display values that are considered ok by TL community standards unless they are derided by other posters or punished administratively. People being offended isn't much of a problem, but comments that target certain groups in and only in conjuction with unequal power relations will in turn cause systemic imbalances that cause real harm to many people (irl, not on TL). The power relations in a forum are basically admins and everyone else. Any other kind of power is just perception and social pressure or whatever which means not a whole lot really. You're taking things a little too seriously here. Someone posting something doesn't mean it's considered "OK" it means it's not bad enough to warrant a ban or warning . Plenty of people post really dumb shit and get away with it mostly because nobody cares that much. (i.e not on the issues you seem to be talking about since there are a lot of people who take it super seriously no matter the context). On August 04 2015 07:38 TheHumanSensation wrote: This isn't necessarily what's happening here. Most posts on TL don't go super far into territory of "you're not welcome here", but there's a lot of posts that objectify women or promote cisnormative discrimination of queer people, for example. This alone would be basically a matter of people being offended, which isn't much of a problem. However, having a mod say "please don't make posts of the form "please don't talk about topic X"" creates a problem of normativity. "Objectify women" -Pretty much the whole purpose of every Kpop video is to objectify women, and the same with pretty much all boy bands, they are like romantic/sexual objects.. Are you basically saying that pretty much all forms of pop music are evil? I mean I kind of disagree with the whole fight against objectification thing, since just it's basically just a product of sexual desire, it doesn't degrade anyone at all. If you find someone sexy and objectify someone, if they suddenly turn ugly you don't suddenly start wanting to have deep conversations with them. There are 7 billion people on earth you can't have an interest in everyone. Sexual interest can lead to romantic and intellectual interest and vice-versa. Just because some people treat women like trash and have no respect for them does not mean its caused specifically by objectification of them. It's more like if these same people suddenly had no sexual desire they would still have zero respect for women but they wouldn't have to interact with them so much so it wouldn't bother as many people, but they still wouldn't let them vote. It's not that they don't value them because they only see them as a sexual object, they already don't value them for anything but sex so they become a sexual object to them. -"Promote cisnormative discrimination of queer people": I'm not sure where you're finding such malicious agendas on a gaming website, but if you're talking about people using the word faggot that's clearly a massive stretch. (Maybe not clearly, I'm sure you disagree) On August 04 2015 07:38 TheHumanSensation wrote: Normativity, most often discussed in the forms of heteronormativity or cisnormativity, is basically the social power something holds by being the normal position - ie, the burden of proof is on the other side. Sometimes normativity can be ok, like when someone is saying WW support is good and we expect them to justify it (which people tried very hard to do). Sometimes normativity is very problematic, like when certain groups of people (genderqueer people, for example) are expected to justify their existence while others (binary people, for example) are not. The problem in this context is that Zess is asking us not to directly challenge normativity. On a broader social scale, this is a problem because it locks systemically oppressed groups into the "slow death" option. Here it's not nearly so grandiose a problem (as LLL doesn't have any real world systemic or institutional social power), but it does protect and systemically reinforce the potentially-problematic posts. So it's not like an awful response or anything, just kind of inadequate. Especially in a post that also says LLL is supposed to be a "welcoming community". There's nothing inherently wrong with this. When a bunch of grown men started watching an infant girl's TV show about magic ponies it's fair that they have to fight to justify their existence and become the proud bronies they are today. Blindly accepting everyone's choices doesn't necessarily make sense. However in the case of genderqueer its obviously completely different as this is pretty far from a social choice. Obviously some people believe it is and they are just going through something similar to a teenage emo phase and thats why its an education problem leading to the oppression. On August 04 2015 07:38 TheHumanSensation wrote: One problem with both what Sonnington is (hypothetically) doing (as per your description), and what you're doing assuming that you're being satirical, is that you're being satirical but actually reinforcing the damage that the group you're satirizing is trying to do. For example, someone being absurdly racist to make a satricial joke is still being non-ironically-racist (in terms of the actual power relations employed and reinforced) unless the joke is used in a way that it highlights the absurdity of racism and in turn helps to combat racism. "Unless the joke is being used in a way that it highlights the absurdity of racism and in turns help to combat racism" Which pretty much the definition of satire as a case in point? Is it really reinforcing the damage? Will someone who isn't racist become more racist than he was? Or more likely you think the closet/open racists will become unboldened by the support and use it to further their racist ways? It's possible, and then you could be weighing the cost vs benefit. However I suspect it's more like "people who are victims of racism will see this and feel even more victimized/isolated". Is there any real proof or studies done for things like "people who hear racist jokes more likely to accept racism" or "people who hear rape jokes more likely to think rape is just fine and dandy"?. Yes racist people will tell racist jokes but it doesn't mean telling racist jokes makes people racist or more accepting of racism. On August 04 2015 07:38 TheHumanSensation wrote: To elaborate, Sonnington put a lot of time and effort into our previous discussion that in turn took up a lot of my time and effort, and then made a similarly dismissive comment towards me later on when I said something like "please no". If Sonnington was merely being satirical to make a point, then it should have ended upon receiving serious critique, as Sonnington should have agreed with my critique / I would have actually been agreeing with Sonnington's original point, in theory. This didn't happen and we quite clearly actually disagreed with each other. So it's not satire, or at least not successful satire. I mean, Sonnington doesn't seem to think it's satire either, just calling it jokes, which they are. Sonnington wasn't making "jokes" because there was no punchline per se. He just means he wasn't being serious he probably didn't want to google the word satire. The previous discussion was making a mountain out of a molehill and attacking a complete strawman of whatever sonnington was saying. Sonnington was being dismissive (if he was I can't really remember becuase the whole thing was so stupid) maybe it's because you were being super dismissive of him? Saying things like "oh go educate yourself" or whatever you said. On August 04 2015 07:38 TheHumanSensation wrote: So, in a weird way to end this post, I have to say that I don't think the claims that "Sonnington's comments are so obviously stupid that they have to be satire or he's an idiot" are true. There's lots of easily accessible research material you can find if you want to learn about how the latter is significant. Regarding the 'ok' thing, I don't think we actually disagree. I'm saying that they are creating/sustaining/reinforcing the validity of X-type oppression, although it is almost certainly not their intent to do so. For example, objectifying women is in many cases just a specific instance/form of misogyny. I do agree with you that much of the discourse supposedly about objectification is overly concerned with (over-/hyper-)sexualizing women, which isn't the same thing as objectification and also isn't problematic for the same reasons as objectification. The cisnorm thing was in regards to many of the things that come up in LLL from discussion regarding 'ladyboys', and sveeral other related topics. As I said, in and of itself, it's not much of a problem, so again I don't think we disagree necessarily. Yes racist people will tell racist jokes but it doesn't mean telling racist jokes makes people racist or more accepting of racism. To clarify: I was specifically regarding when satire fails in it's point. Successful satire would be as you describe here. Also to clarify: We are conceptualizing racism (for example) differently. You're using a common perception of racism that frames it as acts that individuals do. I would refer to this concept as discrimination, or individual oppression (as opposed to systemic or institutional). I was referring to systemic racism, which is when racist attitudes, values, norms, and social practices become normalized or accepted in a society and begin to benefit from the power relations ("perception and social pressure or whatever") of that society to perpetuate themselves. It's a property of a society rather than a property of individuals. So to answer your questions, no, I don't think failed satire will cause someone to become more racist or more people to become racist (although actually the latter probabaly happens, too), but I do think that failed satire can reinforce the attitudes/values/etc as listed above. Obviously if we disagree fundamentally with the existence of social power dynamics and such as I've described then we're just not gonna get anywhere, but otherwise again I don't think we disagree with each other here. I think it was the third thing, possibly absurd comedy (but not satire)? I'm not particularly familiar with types of comedy aside from this one specific critique of failed satire. I was indeed being dismissive. I'm also ok with Sonnington being dismissive towards me, which has basically only happened once and he's been pretty good about it otherwise (please note that I made a typo and used the word "similarly" when I meant to say "similar", here). To clarify: By "please stop" I meant to convey the idea that I personally don't enjoy the posting of such ideas, but not speak for other forum members. Also I think the actual post was something like "could you not do the "especially girls" bullshit". Despite my long posts I'm actually pretty lazy with referring to previous pages so I'm not 100% on that one. I'm not against dismissiveness and I'm often very dismissive, particularly when it comes to basic questions that can be found via google. (2): The post regarding Zess is completely unrelated to our previous discussion or my opinion of you / your posts. (3): Uh, well, sort-of? It's related to women, who are an oppressed group in a very broad sense, so it "has something to do with an oppressed group" in that sense. However, I don't think your post is problematic or furthering the oppression of women. For what it's worth, my answers to your questions would be as follows: + Show Spoiler + Have the K-Popsmiths crossed the line?: no. Are these pretty young ladies wearing proper attire?: fuck the notion of "proper attire". (technically a "yes" I suppose?) Are their stunning dance moves pornographic?: idk it seems to me like sexual people masturbate to everything Is this video over sexualized?: no Are the K-Popsters moving further and further into deviant behaviour?: yes, but I don't think deviant = bad in any context Also actually regarding the first question, I do have further questions that you might be able to answer. My interpretation of "k-popsmiths" is the people in the back who write songs / choreograph dances / direct videos / etc. Maybe this is the wrong interpretation. How much power do these people have, in terms of the production of k-pop stuff? For example, could they in theory coerce the singer/dancers into producing this song/video even if they weren't comfortable with it? If this is the case, then I have concerns and line-crossing becomes way more of a possibility to me. If the performers are doing this completely out of their free will and such, then I'm all for it. | ||
