I'm failing to see how this would be bad. EDIT: Also, Cixah I'm going to call bullshit on time constraints being a thing here compared to a DotA or League tournament, given the 50 minute time constraint for Bo3 during the Swiss portion. Top 8 doesn't have that restriction, but given that an ENTIRE Bo3 is for most of the weekend expected to take just about as long as a League or DotA game, I highly doubt that the running length for top 8 would be as long as you're saying. League and DotA have both finished 8 team tournaments in a weekend with plenty of time to spare. Double Elim top 8 is 9 matches: 2 Winners Round 1, 2 Losers Round 1, 2 Losers Round 2, 1 WB Final, 1 LB Final, 1 GF If we are already playing with the assumption that a Bo3 is 1 hour, a Bo5 can easily be time-capped at 2 hours, no problem. 9 Bo5s is 18 hours of game time. That's easily 2 days of play no problem, with plenty of time to spare. Even if you don't time-cap matches, 9 hours of projected play time in a day leaves you plenty of extra hours to handle extra-long control mirrors that could run past time.

I'm having a more detailed discussion about this on Skype with MoonBear at the moment. While I can understand that Bo5 top 8 isn't something that will just work, all of the "problems" it causes appear to me to just be more signs of a dysfunctional system.

The dysfunctional system that is wizards. Swiss is a double edged sword because it gets you to a top 8 eventually, but takes too long to do so. I'm fine with Bo3 format though. Let's people be more creative with deck design, specifically side boarding.

Seriously though, maybe they just shouldn't invite 244 players to their 'grand final' or whatever you want to call this final/main event thing. You could trickle that down to more consistent/competitive formats in the qualifiers all the way down, which should give you more confidence in your top players being your top players, allowing you to cut the invite list way down, thus running a far more competitive final event. But I don't know shit at all about the volatility or MTG with sideboards and whatnot.

This is basically a part of the discussion I was having with MB, lol. I personally felt like PTs should just be 64 or 32 man and add an intermediate regional qualifying event between PTQs and PTs if you need to shave down to that smaller # of players. Although it should be worth noting that a PT is just the equivalent of a major international tournament. It's not World Championships, which are still separate (and are Bo5 with a smaller # of players).

Thats the thing, this isn't the grand finals. This is like... A stop on the tennis grand slam basically. World's is the grand finals. This is just top 8 of that open. Worlds has 16 players at it which gives us a champion. You grind at these events to get to worlds.

But that's not an excuse for a garbage format. LCS seasons and major DotA tournaments still have proper tournament formats even though they're not TI/Worlds.

Wizard Event Reporter is also super buggy and a problem when it comes to running tournaments. On August 03 2015 05:41 Numy wrote: Is the meta just garbage for this tour? They have have more downtime than actual game time in the top 8. Just a lot of aggro decks so matches are over faster. If you want some good games I can give some recommendations. (SCG has a lot of good VoDs for example.) On August 03 2015 05:41 Cixah wrote: Thats the thing, this isn't the grand finals. This is like... A stop on the tennis triple crown basically. And yeah the Pro Tour is a marketing event which is also one of the big methods for distributing pro points out to players who want to make the gravy train since grinding GPs only is not realistic.

When a new core is out, the control decks usually take a few weeks to gather there notes of results to see what the bestvset of answers is. This format will need mass removal, artifact or enchant removal, and probably a way to gain life. Ruw is probably the best bet in that regard.
