Your bewilderment is probably because you're Canadian. Feral cats are prevalent in most US metroplexes, moreso as you go south or into milder climates. There's an estimated 50-60 million feral cats in the US, and the population is growing rapidly.
As a result most cities have Trap->Neuter->Release programs for controlling feral cat populations, and lots of non-profits and volunteer programs as well. You can socialize adult ferals for adoption but it literally takes years and they're never as likely to be adopted as cats who were socialized as kittens. So instead you prevent reproduction and allow them to continue roaming and taking care of pests. Feral cats that have been caught and spayed/neutered have the tip of one ear cut off as a marker for vets and people who do trapping so they know to just release the cat.
Feral kittens can socialized if you catch them early enough. The ones we've caught are past the ezpz socialization window, but they're still young enough that it should only take a couple months to teach them to be friendly with humans.
Most people don't trap ferals, and in fact this is our first time doing this. However, there are more ferals to catch than any city can handle on its own, and stopping kittens from ending up being either euthanized or the progenitors of another colony are good things.
Plus, kittens.

When my cat ran away last year, I discovered there was a massive feral cat colony in the back of my old apartment complex. I learned a lot about humane trapping in those few weeks - including how to release a trapped skunk at 3 AM without getting sprayed.

Wtf?
Am I the only one completely bewildered by this?

Last year we had a stray. We figured someone dumped a kitten in our neighbourhood, that they didn't get neutered and got pregnant. We figure she got dumped cuz she was way too comfortable around people to really be feral, and while she was young, she wasn't that young either. Her kittens didn't make it sadly, even though we started feeding her bout a month before she had them, she was way underfed, and she didn't attempt to feed the kittens at all .
Happy ending ish tho, after she had them, we took her to the vet, got her neutered/shots, and now she's kitty #3 and despite having a real name, she answers to Shithead before her real name. (Nugget, and I didn't name her)

Look at all that gorgeous fluff. Yay kitties.
We have yet to name the kittens. We kept calling them Ginger and Torti since it was easier than "the orange tabby kitten" and "the tortoise shell kitten", but now we need to come up with actual names.
The Wife wants to name Ginger "Rodgers".

We had Lulu/Violet, and at the time, I desperately tried to convince the family to call Violet Pix, but it failed .
Sadly, Lulu ended up passing from an aneurysm about 2 months before Nugget showed up + Show Spoiler +
And cuz I already linked 2, why not.

For the most part, they all get along, tho Violet/Nugget will have the occasional tussle for pecking order, while Ebony just isn't an aggressive cat at all, and just avoids them when tempers flare lol.

Sunaj is my hero.
Shadowfax and Mischief get along as long as you don't lock them in a room together, then Shadowfax gets snippy and cross.
Guess what we did with the cats for 6 hours last night while we were catching kittens! \o/

Making sure they're the best of friends right? o/

I probably should have known better before I promised Monte and his wifey that I could cat sit at the end of this month.

I would cat if I had a decent litter box location and mostly if my wife wasn't allergic. Sad day. Instead I have a catdog.

To be fair, we weren't planning on having twice as many cats when you left.

Whether or not you were planning it at the time I probably should have expected that your soft, malleable, altruistic hearts would find some reason or other to have me watch extra kittens.

TIL that if you put your right hand 1 key too far to the left and try to spell "wiki" youll spell "wuju" so I think that Master Yi was trying to wikipedia martial arts techniques, but he misspelled and found a troll website instead. Thats why he used to carry like 6 swords on him in the old model.

cats are better than dogs because cats are way more self-sufficient. they also dont bark. a cat in this house in sweden used to give 0 fucks, just open the door during winter and hell go out for 2 days before coming back. Not anymore though, hes super old, everyone thought he would die 5 years ago LOL. Now he goes out with us when we go for a trip outside. But we dont need to keep track of him like we would have to with a dog because we know he will be ok regardless.
Cat is possibly the only animal I would ever consider co-habiting with of my own volition. All other animals either suck or have to be kept in cages which is like ???? why do you even have an animal when you have to keep it in a cage, unless you intend to eat it. LOL thats what zoos are for mate.
^^^^^ that dog looks really inbred. Wonder why taht is LUL

Do you hate it when other people have fun playing Hearthstone? Try Mage! No one else is allowed to play the game while you have cards in your hand!

Poor Freya has gunk in one eye. Thor seems fine but they're both going to the vet tomorrow along with their mother (who we successfully caught tonight!).
