I'm also of the opinion that the Star Trek films are good. They're just... it's blockbuster with Star Trek wrap, not an adaptation of the series and if you can look past that then it's really easy to have a good time despite the not-spectacular writing. The Harry Potter movies were also pretty good, though they did have to end up skipping a handful of details (if I remember right, I didn't read any book past 5 and that was a long time ago).

I didn't hate it. I was critical because it's one of the formative books of my childhood and (especially when taken alongside SftD) is one of my favorite books of all time, so I had to nitpick and I couldn't just shut out the inner fanboy. It was beautifully shot, the CGI was phenominal, the actors did a decent job (hard with a mixed bag of child actors), and it got through the story well enough. I had a good enough time.

French publishers already split English and American books in several parts, Royal Assassin from Robin Hobb went from 3 to 13 books zzz (unsurprisingly I imported them). Honor Harrington books are also split in 2 after they start passing 600 pages, even when it's not the pocket edition.

The wording of the story itself isn't too "heavy" (you can look into Zola and Flaubert novels for how you can abuse the shit out of our language to kill brain cells and breed boredom), at least compared to the original version. It tends to be very straight-forward during dialogues and action scenes actually (the way dialogues are written tended to remind me of the very simplified language used in the Bible I had younger). ^ I resort to cursing in English in some situations where I find equivalents sound sharper than in French. Prob. wouldn't if TL wasn't one my most frequented sites though, makes me practice English a bunch. Pretty much only do it when I'm alone to (so there's ironically noone to hear the difference; I guess it's to vent out better then >>)."Fucking" has that "spit out" thing and you can just slap it anywhere so it's way easier to use. In French you'd use something like "saleté/saloperie de" (longer) or "foutu" (not that sharp of a sound) so you can't really use direct equivalents. "Son of a bitch" is more insulting in French than in English too. When French people whine or rage in soloQ most of the time it's a combo of stfu, you're trash/shit/a piece of shit with insults like noob or fag, or whining with "normal" sentences punctuated by random "bitch" or "fag" intersped here and there. They aren't very creative. (In case you're wondering, I rage in English with long-winded sentences explaining what's going wrong and why, calling out people without cursing at them, because I've got a niche to fill.) He's drunk, but he can pretend it's both if he wants to lessen the blow. it's not hard to read it's just very slow. I read it a couple times in middle school but went back to it a couple years ago and couldn't make it through, just so plodding, especially in the beginning.

I mean, I like Tolkein and taking things slow and even I sometimes find myself skimming all the articles I'm reading rather than actually reading them start to finish.

I like to go back and watch older movies and see how long and different they are. Anime movies are also really like this, probably one of the reasons I like to watch them. Trust and Betrayal, the original Ghost in the Shell, Ghibli flicks - they take their time and stop to smell the roses, so to speak. I just feel like a lot of modern movies are all about "tell the story quickly so we can get from A to B and show off our cool SFX and action scenes!". I'm not the biggest fan.

Blockbusters have always been that way, at least since the idea of a blockbuster has existed. Even other mediums have had their 'blockbuster' style works, like plays that were specifically written to be understood by masses of poor and uneducated people to sellout massive theaters and drive ticket sales(sound familiar?) as opposed to high art. If you should be mad about it it's because Hollywood is taking novels that probably shouldn't be blockbusters and fitting them to that style.

If I go to watch a movie for explosions I will indeed be disappointed by the lack of explosions. For example, I intend on going to see Thor this weekend, and while I'd like for there to be SOME semblance of a story related to the comics, I more just want to see the God of Thunder and his demigod brother kick some ass and save the world in glorious fashion from a fantastically powerful villain who does unbelievable stuff. I want to see Natalie Portman's ass, and the woman I go with will want to see Chris Hemsworth's bare chest, and we'll both probably be very entertained. I see nothing uncultured about being able to relax and enjoy something made for relaxation and enjoyment. When I want high art I seek out high art, blockbusters are not where you should go to find it.

Just like Cheep is different from cool people. Anything special going to happen at Blizzcon you think? We shouldn't be expecting LotV news yet, should we?
