I wonder if I'll hit 20k before or after the LR thread of this evening. Not that it'll make me full build, Hexcore unavailable in the shop. Segregation!

That is more reasoning for it not being a thing since well it's perfectly logical and people should know about visual processing from basic schooling.

(I see white and gold in the original picture) On February 28 2015 00:40 Numy wrote: That doesn't explain why it's a thing. I was out at the bars last night and this picture got brought up in like 3 completely different groups of people. It's weird because we assume colors are a constant so when we have two people looking at the same picture and saying they see different colors we lose our minds becauses that's not how things usually work. That is more reasoning for it not being a thing since well it's perfectly logical and people should know about visual processing from basic schooling. Nobody teaches that stuff in basic schooling; most people aren't even tangentially aware of the shortcuts, heuristics, and contextual hints our brains use to process information. Even for people who are aware there's a difference between being told "Hey, look at this neat optical illusion! A and B are the same color.*" and seeing some random image of a dress on Twitter. *SEE: + Show Spoiler + ![]() The connection between the video and the dress is context. The bright background could indicate outdoor light and that the dress is shaded by an awning or enclosure, which causes the dress to look White/Gold. However, the bright background could also (and in reality was) a function of overexposure, which causes the dress to look Blue/Black. How it looks it heavily dependent on which assumption your brain makes, just like in the table tiles illusion from the video. That's why this is a thing. On February 28 2015 00:58 Fildun wrote: The dress is light blue (or heavy blue white) and light brown imo. Go look at mordek's link earlier. That's the actual dress, but I definitely saw it the same way you do when I first encountered the subject. Then after scrolling down and seeing the user-submitted images I saw it as Blue/Black and my mind was blown.

I agree a lot of it is dumb, but you don't find any of this interesting at all? Even just from a social perspective I find it amazing how something like this could just blow up over the course of a night.
