Those are good ideas, but I've read all of em. RIP.

Also read 1984 (read most of Orwell's stuff) and Brave New World, although neither really fill my criterias, but thanks anyways for the suggestions Crusnik ^_^

Cheep, that book looks really interesting, but I'm not sure I could make a good argument that it's an American novel, specifically (just from browsing it on Wikipedia, that is). Do you have a fallback option in case it doesn't fit the criteria?

"The Poisonwood Bible", "A Confederacy of Dunces", and "White Noise".

A: commonly taught in schools (if it's removed from the American canon, that's actually preferable) or
B: suck ass because boring books are no fun. Oh and
C: Have some sort of easily decipherable symbolism allowing for potential easy essays to be written. Racial or Feminist issues are a bonus. This whole part is less necessary than A and B though.

Also, if one more person suggests The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged, I'm gonna give up on life. Seriously fuck Ayn Rand.

On another note, it's pretty funny how so many people are talking about this incoming blizzard, and I'm just sitting here in the prettiest weather I've seen in months ^_^

Maybe Steinbeck's East of Eden? It's great and I think (or rather assume) that usually only the shorter Steinbeck novels are taught in school. That's also the disadvantage on the other hand, it is pretty long.

This right here is pretty fucking dumb. You don't have to have "strong beliefs" to hold a vegetarian diet, or any diet in general. It can literally all come down to a matter of preference. It's like saying that if somebody is religious then they have to be a zealot. Well then, time to not date anybody outside of our own religions or not date anybody religious if we're not part of one.

It's the difference between dating somebody that drinks and somebody that is an alcoholic. The issue isn't what they consume, it's how it affects other people.

This is actually a good suggestion if both parties are fairly strong in their different religious beliefs. But it also goes farther than that though, because there's a whole bunch of background stuff that they typically don't share, which also causes relationship tensions.

Ah ok.
I would agree with Cheep though if it fits your criteria, Le Guin is an amazing author.

The fact that you didn't go with Czechmate massively disappoints me.

Now that I think about it, that sounds like a dating site.

One of my friends calls himself a vegetarian but still eats sea animals and the only reason is that he doesn't like the taste of land mammals. He doesn't match my definition but despite the passage of time he still calls himself one. He's kind of odd that way.

Also, I feel like diet discussions are really annoying during dinner. In the last one I listened to two people as they went on to each other about how they avoid bread and grains and the rest of us just kind of awkwardly listened in as we ate our burritos, tortilla chips, and rice.

Really? Nazism by itself is a radical idea, I don't see how that qualifies. Of every relationship I've been in since I stopped eating meat, 0 of them ended due to issues about eating meat. It's as impactful as my being left handed.

Whether or not somebody calls themselves a vegetarian doesn't matter. They are one by definition.

The reason you don't identify as an non-icecream eater is because you don't live in a culture that wants to put ice cream in every meal and upon meeting you, people don't assume you eat ice cream.
