Ursula K. LeGuin, Left Hand of Darkness. Gender studies ahoy.

Hovers on the edge of canon, though moving more and more firmly into solid canon status.. Frequently gets flamed for being "sci-fi" by canon elitists so that's a bonus.

Would 1984 or Brave New World it your criteria? I recommend both, mostly because Brave New World is basically our world atm.

Both 1984 and Brave New World are:

1. Not American;
3. Not really involved with racism/feminism;
4. Super commonly taught in schools.

In addition, Brave New World was published before 1940.

So you basically gave him suggestions that failed every single one of his criteria. RIP.

Meh, i don't understand the problem. i do the cooking so its not a problem. if you feel guilty because the other person doesn't eat meat thats your own guilt issue not the vegetarians. unless they are being a martyr about it. fuck those people. its just as dickish as talking about how great meat is to a vegetarian. we don't give a shit.

EDIT: ghandi i know that feeling man. beautiful here too.

I don't feel guilty at all. If I felt guilty I wouldn't eat what I do. The big problem is there are basically two reasons you're a vegetarian: it's a moral standpoint and you are going to be directly opposed to what I eat, or it's a 'health choice' and you are in my opinion just wrong and neither of those are great foundational oppositions for a relationship.

Everything I eat short of a cheat meal/snack has meat or eggs in it. Everything. I would need to completely alter my food prep to make this work. I get that compromise is involved in successful relationships, but compromise is generally not 'totally change a major aspect of your life.'

yeah. i mean i'm starting to wonder about the vegetarians these guys have met. are they actual vegetarians, or are they people on a diet.

i've had girls tell me they are vegetarian because they dont eat red meat and then at chipotle be like: what, don't you want chicken on your burrito? then there are the kinds that are vegetarians for the past couple weeks and start to talk like they know everything about it. bitch you're on a diet you aren't a vegetarian. But the good ones are great. and i'm just going to say, i've never met a vegetarian that hasn't been real eager to service my vehicle.

So no one can become vegetarian because they don't like meat? no one can be raised vegetarian and not hold the beliefs of their parents? no one can just like vegetarian food better? thats some ignorant shit man. If someone is asking you to change a major aspect of your life for them that's a problem with the person, not their lifestyle.

EDIT: also my apartment now smells like corn bread and cookies.

I highly, highly doubt there are people that 'just don't like any meat, or eggs, or fish, at all, full stop.' But even if there are, the bolded point here is INCREDIBLY important.

What are we going to feed our kids? I'm certainly not of the opinion that a vegetarian diet is what my kids should be following. If my wife believes it is, that's going to be some argument.

I think there are a lot of generalizations coming in from both sides of this argument. Clearly people are capable of being in a relationship with a vegetarian when they are not one themselves. Soniv and Dandel are not those people, which is fine, they have every right (even have experiences with it not working out). Still I'm sure there are thousands of happy couples in that exact situation right now.

Edit: Which is why this entire argument is dumb because it's all just personal preference.

The world according to garp.
Excellent book, even had a movie made out of it, not commonly taught in schools.

I remember that book making me furious at the a couple of the characters.
