Guys, I'm in desperate need of an American fiction novel written 1940 or later, and it can't be either
A: commonly taught in schools (if it's removed from the American canon, that's actually preferable) or
B: suck ass because boring books are no fun. Oh and
C: Have some sort of easily decipherable symbolism allowing for potential easy essays to be written. Racial or Feminist issues are a bonus. This whole part is less necessary than A and B though.

Also, if one more person suggests The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged, I'm gonna give up on life. Seriously fuck Ayn Rand.

On another note, it's pretty funny how so many people are talking about this incoming blizzard, and I'm just sitting here in the prettiest weather I've seen in months ^_^

Would 1984 or Brave New World it your criteria? I recommend both, mostly because Brave New World is basically our world atm.

Both 1984 and Brave New World are:

1. Not American;
3. Not really involved with racism/feminism;
4. Super commonly taught in schools.

In addition, Brave New World was published before 1940.

So you basically gave him suggestions that failed every single one of his criteria. RIP.

Oh, well, I don't read a lot of American lit, hell, I don't read a lot of books published after 1950~ since I dislike the writing style. Those two just came to mind because of easily identified social criticisms/fairly easy plot.

yeah. i mean i'm starting to wonder about the vegetarians these guys have met. are they actual vegetarians, or are they people on a diet.

i've had girls tell me they are vegetarian because they dont eat red meat and then at chipotle be like: what, don't you want chicken on your burrito? then there are the kinds that are vegetarians for the past couple weeks and start to talk like they know everything about it. bitch you're on a diet you aren't a vegetarian. But the good ones are great. and i'm just going to say, i've never met a vegetarian that hasn't been real eager to service my vehicle.

I don't feel guilty at all. If I felt guilty I wouldn't eat what I do. The big problem is there are basically two reasons you're a vegetarian: it's a moral standpoint and you are going to be directly opposed to what I eat, or it's a 'health choice' and you are in my opinion just wrong and neither of those are great foundational oppositions for a relationship.

Everything I eat short of a cheat meal/snack has meat or eggs in it. Everything. I would need to completely alter my food prep to make this work. I get that compromise is involved in successful relationships, but compromise is generally not 'totally change a major aspect of your life.'

So no one can become vegetarian because they don't like meat? no one can be raised vegetarian and not hold the beliefs of their parents? no one can just like vegetarian food better? thats some ignorant shit man. If someone is asking you to change a major aspect of your life for them that's a problem with the person, not their lifestyle.

I highly, highly doubt there are people that 'just don't like any meat, or eggs, or fish, at all, full stop.' But even if there are, the bolded point here is INCREDIBLY important.

What are we going to feed our kids? I'm certainly not of the opinion that a vegetarian diet is what my kids should be following. If my wife believes it is, that's going to be some argument.

Eggs aren't restricted by a vegetarian diet.

For example red. my parents stopped eating meat before i was born, i was raised vegetarian. i don't eat it because i don't like the smell of meat and i love vegetarian food, and i cook for myself so its not a problem. the only time i ever ask someone not to do something because im vegetarian, are when assholes in school would shove their food in my face when i was like 10. If my wife wants our kids to eat meat, thats fine, i don't mind. saying don't ever date vegetarians because of the bad ones is no different from saying don't date jewish people or christians or indian people or people without college educations. If having your significant other eat meat is that important to you, whatever fine. but thats YOU. not the vegetarians.

Still I'm sure there are thousands of happy couples in that exact situation right now.

Edit: Which is why this entire argument is dumb because it's all just personal preference.

the difference is that dandel is claiming no one should date vegetarians unless they are one. thats some bigoted shit. if it was "i don't date vegetarians" then whatever who cares.

While you might not mind if your kids and wife eat meat, whoever is doing the majority of cooking is gunna be annoyed to have to cater to both. So there's that.

I read it more as "you're probably gunna have a hard time dating someone with different dietary restrictions than yourself." and less so "vegetarians are whiny bitches that you shouldn't date".

I never said 'don't date because of the bad ones.' I have no ill will towards those who are strong in their beliefs. If a vegetarian mother wants her kids to eat vegetarian, I have no problem with that and don't think her a terrible person(well, maybe a tiny bit because I think it's not a good diet, but there are plenty of omnivore parents that feed their kids shitty diets as well). I'm not talking about a mega outspoken, out on the streets protesting about how cows and chickens are treated, will nag you the entire meal if you order a steak on a dinner date vegetarian.

I can't call you a liar, but even in posts in this mini discussion you've shown disdain for having to cook meat for roommates, mentioned that you have a genuine dislike for the smell of fried chicken, and a general dislike of the smell of meat in general, and yet you're saying you'd have no problem preparing meals filled with meat for the rest of your life for your wife and family? I doubt it. Maybe you're a better person in this aspect than I am, but I'd expect a level of resentment to be there, even if very small, and that is poison for a relationship.

I mean the cooking issue shouldn't be a problem. every vegetarian should know how to cook for themselves, and its not difficult to cook meat in a separate pan and then add it afterwards or during plating. if an extra pan is causing problems in your relationship. you have a crappy relationship or some built up resentment from something else. People order out fairly often as well, and thats obviously not a problem. if you are dating a whiny bitch who is a vegetarian, the problem is the whiny bitch part, not the vegetarian part. I've never had issue preparing meals for myself and my friends who all have different dietary needs. If vegetarianism is a problem, allergies must be a deal breaker even moreso.

My disdain for having to cook meat for my roommate was he was trying to cook something that has some of the more pungent penetrating odors, and then didn't know what he was doing and i had to do it for him because of that.

my issue was the smell of fried chicken and his ineptitude and making me do it for him. we also aren't emotionally and physically attracted to eachother. i don't think not liking the smell of certain foods means a damn thing. i have no issues with the smell of chicken that isn't fried, or any beef or most pork or anything. just fish/fried chicken/bacon in general its fried foods because the fat splatters everywhere and the smell is inescapable. If they wanted specifically those foods, they can do that themselves. thats hardly a reason to get upset. if they are the kind of person who doesn't ever want to do anything for themselves thats more poison for a relationship than anything else.

I accept your unwillingness and inability to understand my point because of your heavy bias towards people you've never interacted with just because you share an answer to a life choice.

its not about what they eat, its the fact they are specifically avoiding something usually because of strong beliefs and if you disagree fundamentally you might have issues

like if you are a vegetarian you'd probably want to convince other people that your lifestyle is better and if you can't even convince your SO where are you

Those are good ideas, but I've read all of em. RIP.

Also read 1984 (read most of Orwell's stuff) and Brave New World, although neither really fill my criterias, but thanks anyways for the suggestions Crusnik ^_^

Cheep, that book looks really interesting, but I'm not sure I could make a good argument that it's an American novel, specifically (just from browsing it on Wikipedia, that is). Do you have a fallback option in case it doesn't fit the criteria?

This right here is pretty fucking dumb. You don't have to have "strong beliefs" to hold a vegetarian diet, or any diet in general. It can literally all come down to a matter of preference. It's like saying that if somebody is religious then they have to be a zealot. Well then, time to not date anybody outside of our own religions or not date anybody religious if we're not part of one.

It's the difference between dating somebody that drinks and somebody that is an alcoholic. The issue isn't what they consume, it's how it affects other people.
