i don't think any 2 mana card should have the potential to outright win you the game wasn't UTH changed from 2 to 3 a while ago?

The right circumstances is the key. Unstable portal basically requires no circumstances to instantly win you the game sometimes.

Why hello there pane of glass in the stuck door I'm trying to open, yes, I'd like you to shatter on my hand. =\

"Win you the game sometimes" is still only just a sometimes. It's up to Blizz to see if it's hiking up Mage's winrate too much or if despite it being strong doesn't unbalance the game.

I mean, as with many other things in GvG, it's not just the impact, but how the randomness of the outcome is too high relative to the impact of the effect.
I'm not sure why Blizzard considers this to be good for the game, especially when the community had a thorough discussion about this issue when Tinkmaster/Pagle were staples of constructed play.

Pretty sure blizzard made their stance on rng pretty clear recently, and it was that the best players play around it or some such jive.

That seems contrary to unstable portal design lol.

That's only really possible if the impact and variance of a card's effect are in line with one another though, especially when good play from one side or another affects the randomness in a way that reduces the variance.
The thing with Unstable Portal is that it's random component has zero direct interaction with the board state while having high inherent randomness. Because of this, there's no real way to "control" the randomness of Unstable Portal the way you can with other cards because what happens on the board doesn't affect what Unstable Portal does (whereas something like Mad Bomber can be controlled by altering the state of the board).

But is this effect so detrimental that they should redesign the spell? I'm not going to argue that it's true it has no counterplay with high randomness, but does is destroy the game's balance so much that it needs to be fixed? I'm still not convinced.

Unstable Portal is just a poster child for a lot of cards in GvG that are designed that way. It's not a one-off example, it's a bad design philosophy endemic to the entire set.
It's just getting flak now because it's what people are losing to.

There's also nothing you can do against your opponent playing a portal except hope they pull something trash. At least you can set up and interact with all the new Cairnemechs and stuff like Mind Vision or Thoughtsteal come from your deck so you can get an idea of what they could have to play around.

Has GvG been thoroughly studied enough to call the impact of the GvG cards overall detrimental to the game by basing the game in more RNG then what is playable. I think every reaction about "x card is bad" is still too early. After a couple of months of people countering op strats with even more op I'll be more convinced. So far it just seems very knee-jerky.

The games balance doesn't matter. Nat pagle didn't destroy the games balance but it created experiences which were detrimental to the games themselves. They redesigned the card because of this. They nerfed Freeze mage because of non-interaction games not because it was overpowered. Unstable portal is the same as both of these situations in that it's non-interactive and it creates experiences that they said they don't want. Seems they either didn't learn from these situations or just don't care anymore.

I don't see why the set needs to be "thoroughly studied" when a lot of the argument against high-variance high-impact RNG cards is that they're superficially un-fun to play with/against.
It's precisely the knee-jerk/face value assessment of these cards and NOT the long-term evaluation that makes them un-fun and poorly designed. That's the realization that WotC made that started steering them away from those kind of card designs in Magic.

Pagle and Tinkmaster were different than what Unstable is though. One was a persisting affect in a 1/4 form, and tinkmaster was a polymorph battlecry, both of which gave you an immediate payout upon playing. Unstable unless it pulls a 3 cost or less minion doesn't do anything immediately and forces you to play it in the following turn. A lategame Unstable isn't game breaking, really only on T1-2.
