See that shit is just bullshit. Why is this in the game? I lose to fatigue while having complete board control due to his unstable portal getting one of the 2 cards that would win him the game.

Obviously this is a specific example, but the idea is that is has huge impact (and you can mulligan for it) on the early turns, and can still be useful later on. Heck, considering it's expected value, it's not even a bad top deck (which Undertaker is, for example). It's also mostly "free", in that the drawbacks are pretty weak, it doesn't require setup, it's a 1 for 1, etc.

I don't see why the set needs to be "thoroughly studied" when a lot of the argument against high-variance high-impact RNG cards is that they're superficially un-fun to play with/against. It's precisely the knee-jerk/face value assessment of these cards and NOT the long-term evaluation that makes them un-fun and poorly designed. That's the realization that WotC made that started steering them away from those kind of card designs in Magic. It also doesn't help that the format doesn't allow for longer games (bigger decks) to smooth out RNG impacts. I get that card games are quite heavily based on RNG inherently, but specifically adding it to cards, in such quantity and with such game-changing power is pretty fucking stupid. It turns the game into a thinly veiled coin flip lol.

Not really, with the way the game works the only classes that would be able to do it are trap classes. That's not true. You can put "whenever an opponent casts a spell, counter it and destroy <this>" on a minion. There's already precedent for minions that interact with spell casts (e.g. Lorewalker Cho), it just happens that none have used the counter effect. It's more likely that Blizzard shied away from effects like countermagic, mana denial, or hand disruption (though the two former ones exist in limited forms in Counterspell and Loatheb/Mana Wraith) because those mechanics could be seen as "un-fun"--despite the fact that their absence has a lot of impact on how the game can play.

![]() My freeze mage decklist. Cards to consider: Loot Hoarder for Novice Engineer (more pressure as its 2/1 as opposed to 1/1, but if you can't waste 2 mana to ping it things go sour; prefer novice due to instant effect) Counterspell x1 (hard to find room for this without removing x1 Ice Barrier, which is awkward and dangerous, but useful if you're looking to deny a heal, though this is less effective since people tend to use healbot, or can guarantee a Doomsayer-Frost Nova clear) Antonidas (don't like it, but it can be used to draw more fireballs if you ever need it: unlikely, this deck has 57 damage between Alex, Pyro, and a full Thalnos x2 sorc rotation; sacrifices critical inconsistency for the possibility of beating GvG Warriors; not werth) Play minion card draw first. They're weak early pressure, and AI can be used with the x2 sorc combo to quickly cycle through the deck if you're looking for a card.

One was a persisting affect in a 1/4 form, and tinkmaster was a polymorph battlecry, both of which gave you an immediate payout upon playing. Unstable unless it pulls a 3 cost or less minion doesn't do anything immediately and forces you to play it in the following turn. A lategame Unstable isn't game breaking, really only on T1-2. pagle was a 0-4 actually but still didn't win games to the extent that unstable portal does would like to note that i just lost another game to unstable portal black knight

I don't know shit about the HS specifics here, but that much is easy to logic through.
