Eppa, do you mean that a lot of films don't have these jokes, or that a lot of Mel Brook's jokes don't fulfill the clever+funny requirement? ![]()

I'd have to wager 80% of the shows on there are crude for the sake of being crude and completely random with very little intelligence or writing put in. Compare a show like archer to something like fucking squidbillies for example. Even the oldest shows by Williams Street showed the beginnings of that trend toward completely nonsensical humor (sgc2c) and it's just escalated since then. I truly don't understand what makes so many shows like that so popular, and too many cooks is just one more example with slightly less humor and more shock value thrown in. Agree to disagree.

So question for you req: there are a lot of people who don't find monty python funny for some similar reasons to those I talked about earlier (I'm not one of them. I fucking love them) Where do you think the difference lies?

Why is there 11 minutes of some retarded song introducing random cheesey people from the 60s and then some dead cat puppet at the end? (Yes, i skipped it because IT WAS ELEVEN FUCKING MINUTES OF SINGING BULLSHIT CHEESEY PEOPLE.) How fucking absurd that people could find that entertaining whattttttttttt Must do more research on this shit.

I fucking love them) Where do you think the difference lies? Well, they're both absurdist humor. But the brilliance of Monty Python (and much of British humor as a whole) lies in the fact that everything is so straightfaced. The most insane or stupid situations are brought up, but everyone acts with the deadpan like "oh well, pip pip and all that" and the scene keeps going. Like, look at the self defense sketch: The premise is stupid. But everyone treats it so seriously and with that standard dry wit that you just get caught up. That's the thing of it, I think, is that Monty Python has the pace and comedic flow/timing/whatever to make you really into it and invested. Whereas the Adult Swim stuff is just throwing stuff up in front of you and basically screaming "ISN'T THIS STRANGE? HAHAH IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE IT'S RANDOM AND DISTURBING/OFFENSIVE". There's nothing remotely like a joke or anecdote, it's just things that would make you laugh if you were stoned.

The whole thing is an absurdist/bizarre parody of 80s sitcoms intros and tropes. It takes things past 11 but it makes a whole lot more sense if you regularly tuned into shows like Full House, Growing Pains, or Family Matters as a kid.

It's a parody of how long those intro sequences were. I got that. It needed to be about as half as long to be funny. And the random "violence and disturbing images" did nothing to add to the joke, it was just trying to be shock value and failed.

It is just about length - there's no joke, there's no punchline, it's just the same thing escalating for 11 minutes. "You don't get it" is just internet for "I want to sound like I know what I'm saying more than you but I actually don't have anything constructive to say".

I found it hilarious but that well may be because I've been watching a ton of late 80s and early 90s sitcoms.
