Hardly. TL never made a League team instead of a DotA one. That is the specificness that made DotA2 feel like a slap in the face and what is making HotS feel like the other side of the same hand.

We got a subforum, moderators, etc. before DotA did, despite the DotA/HoN thread existing for years before us.

Getting a LoL team is pretty costly these days.

With NA teams moving upward, so is the cost of maintaining such a team. It's way more costly to do one for LoL than for.... whatever that game Blizzard is making.

Idk I don't find this "TL Narrative" unbelievable or particularly sellout, it was probably something like
Blizzard: omg guys we need pro teams on our Blizzcon TL pl0x?
Team Liquid: idk maybe?
Sheth: omg I love you TL
Team Liquid: omg I love you Sheth
Sheth: omg guys I play HotS now
Team Liquid: OMG
Blizzard (evil villainy voice): everything going according to the plan...

Yea man, they sure supported LoL staff so much. They sure did a lot to help the LoL staff grow. They sure gave the LoL staff opportunities to grow their section as well. It's not like we were a corner of their website that was shunned. We were totally supported all the time! We have plenty of LoL staff who stayed on because TL was so promising for LoL!

/s

Seriously. The LoL staff couldn't even get articles featured. These same analysis articles which people from Inven(I believe) were translating into Korean for Korean readers.

he's not talking about TL at all. when League first was a thing dota players tried it and dismissed it as an awful game that wasn't going anywhere. because it kind of was an awful game.

And what attention that DotA2 gets that LoL doesn't would you want
A separate board?
Maybe some official articles on the game?*
A pro team to root for?
More people on this forum?

all of those things are worthless except the last one and there even are people who bitch about how influx of new forum-goers sucks.

*not insulting the writers here, but if TL sucks dick at promoting the articles there are other sites to publish them on and it's no big deal

And they did do exactly that. Which is why people saying TL LoL was supported bothers me. It is an exaggeration that somehow keeps being repeated for some ungodly reason.

I mean yeah, saying that TL supported LoL any more than give us a board to post on is certainly an exaggeration and it does rather suck that the writers got dickall (I mean some of the articles were legit good. There was one on jungle Evelynn in some Korean games like year+ ago and it was really good)
but wasn't writers being shafted a thing like, over a year ago? Are we still bitter about that now?

OK let's be honest. The TL reports on LCS were barely catching anyone's attention.

Pretty sure everyone was upvoting like crazy here but not a single one hit more than 50 karma on /r/leagueoflegends. It was just poorly ran and was not capturing the intended audience.

Idk, I don't care about articles but looking at them they looked to average like 7 responses even on this forum. Doesn't seem like it was catching too much attention of TL people either.

OK I mean no offense to the writers who wrote those articles, but those articles were grossly missing the point. Like seriously, no one was interested in reading a wall of text in the form of a 5000 word essay. Promotions or not, they sucked.

I bet if Teamliquif put my RP calculator on the website I will attract more traffic in 2 days than those articles combined.

In any case, it is already too late for Teamliquid to do anything about LoL, and no one is actually interested to be that bold. Overall this website has been extremely conservative. For example it has been asked for years to make a feature which notifies the user when his post got quoted - it's a simple feature and some people decided that forcing users to refresh is better. Now let's look at how reddit does it.

I feel TL lacks visionary business leadership. The same model that worked 10 years ago won't work now. It's more or less a slow death at this point.

i don't think TL is dying at all. if anything i feel like the only thing that died was the starcraft 2 crowd and the rest of the community has slowly been growing.

I mean that does bring an interesting point, when we look at the LCS articles like these:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/league-of-legends/425659-na-lcs-summer-week-8-write-up
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/league-of-legends/444137-eu-lcs-s4-spring-week-5-review

when would you read something like this?

The analysis articles were gaining traction when they put them out. You are actually wrong about them. There were front paged articles from TL. Interviews by Chexx, some analysis articles, I think the worlds analysis one reached front page too.

I admit my memory isn't the best though.

The problem with analysis articles was they were quickly obsolete because of Riot's patch cycles. But they were most definitely excellent articles, the ones I didn't think were that good were the LCS updates, they should have been way more concise, especially since bo1's don't mean jack shit. More effort should have been focused on playoffs.

Basically the reason TL LoL coverage was unsuccessful was mainly 2fold

1. Riot wanted to maintain absolute controll over the scene and coverage and was able to pay the best writers from each community website to write for them instead, even from TL we have Neo, Fionn, and Chexx. Can you really expect to build up a strong community site and do coverage if the people making the game are actively trying to prevent you from doing it while producing Riot-approved superiorcontent?

2. Covering NA/EU - like why would you cover the 2 weakest scenes, compete against RIOTESPORTS, and devote manpower to writing about something that everybody who follows LoL has a thousand sources to when what TL does best is the opposite of regular coverage that's churned out. Why the focus wasn't on using our roots and connection in Korean Esports to cover the strongest scene in the world in something unique, valuable, and pitched for the hardcore fans was beyond me.

Those two were a pair of reasons why TL LoL coverage would never have succeeded in the end no matter what. All other reasons like "lack of TL support" are all excuses to cover up something that fundamentally had no hope of working given the path it was taking and business environment it was competing in.
