*diatribe about back in my day blah blah 90s kids grumble grumble*
In other news, I finally finished my placements and through some unknown calculation error or some shit, I got placed in Silver I despite not playing all year and going 4-6.
I kinda wish I DID end up in Bronze because now I'm going to be tempted to reach gold before season's end again

..so, with all the MTG talk that pops up in here and after watching Day9's mtg introduction show I went and downloaded xmage and spent all my free time this afternoon struggling to comprehend deckbuilding. Even after reading the rules and then restricting myself to just the latest expansion set my head still hurts.
At least the AI isn't constantly beating me anymore!

If it's your first time playing, it's probably easier to play with a core set rather than the newest expansion. The cards tend to be more straightforward, cover more fundamental mechanics, and less tied to set-specific themes.

At least the AI isn't constantly beating me anymore! Should always copy decks that are already out there to understand deck motifs. Then start with building side deck for your current decks, then you can start transitioning into building your own decks. Haven't played MtG in like 8 years, so I'm pretty fucking rusty, but that's pretty much how I remember how I learned to play and deck build.

If you're playing casually, then netdecking is not going to expose you to most of the card pool. If you're interested in being serious, I don't even think constructed is the best place to start--Limited teaches you basic gameplay concepts in a controlled environment much better than the far-too-large card pool of constructed formats.
