A traditional Japanese haiku is supposed to contain a jxutaposition of two different ideas/images while alluding to nature - including a "kigo" or "season word."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku

Even if you go to foreign lenguage haikus, the kigo and kiru aspects are supposed to be somewhat preserved. In fact, it is the 5/7/5 structure that is the least important and the one that is most often discarded, though ironically, it is the (only?) one that is known when people want to feel clever and post "haikus" on the internet.

I think the main problem is that when you get taught your crash course through 101 different poem formats in school, the focus is just on broadly outlining traditional regulations as opposed to spending time on getting to the essence of what poetry is, which admittedly is a much more difficult topic, and one that is probably unsuitable for a random high school class. Shame, though, it contributes to people disliking/not caring for poetry :[

I think part of it is the "teenager being forced to learn things they may not care too much about/fuck the man" attitude.

I love reading, but I never read books for school. I just wanted to be entertained instead of being grilled on why the curtains were blue (spoiler - they're just fucking blue curtains, not the sorrow of man draped to cover the evils of outside influence).

But you provided me a TIL, and I really like poetry when it's done well.

I am generally in agreement with that popular statement (the curtains were fucking blue), but I think it's dangerous to assume that everything that isn't immediately obvious is meaningless, which happens often.

in addition, that sentiment comes from teenagers' discontent with being forced to read literature in school, even though they are usually being forced to read solid classics where it's more likely than not that there -is- meaning in seemingly trivial minute details.
