Weird, I was pretty sure that the two games were pretty much equal speed, but melee does look faster. Is it just the players in that game being more skilled?

Which two games? If you're talking Melee to Brawl you're out of your mind X_X.
Melee to P:M is PRETTY Close, I still find melee a bit faster, but P:M easier to follow.

Brawl is a slower game and doesn't have a few mechanics that allows for faster gameplay.

This wouldn't actually work, once you have 10 cards in your hand you can't actually cast another flare without having one drop to the void. You would deck around the same turn that you "killed" him with your 15 turns of hero power.
