The tragedy of round robin groups

Well, they are the best way of ensuring that the best player actually finishes first. Everyone plays everyone on equal terms, no luck of the draw.

So if a match ends up being irrelevant it's only because someone has been playing exceptionally well.

There is luck of draw in the order. It might happen that player A gets eliminated only because player B beats player C, because he gets to meet him at a point when the game does not matter to player C at all (while when A played C, it still mattered). There are definitely arguments for each system, but "no luck of draw" is not a valid argument for round robin.

What mistake? This is exactly what I remember. Nothing else could have happened. Perfect description of reality as I perceive it.

Some production issues and an unfortunate time zone for EU, but I still had a blast with WESG and all it's awesome qualifier tournaments. I hope they do this again.

They are in it for the long run and have tons of actual money to burn so definitely!

Here's a thought:

WESG should become another WCS global event where the winner qualifies directly to Blizzcon. So there would be IEM as well as WESG.

And they should stop subtracting a seed from Korea or Circuit according to who wins the direct seeds at the global events. So at Blizzcon we would have 8 (or 7) players from Korea and Circuit each plus the 2 players that won the global events, regardless of region.

That would mean the stronger region could have two players more than the weaker one, but it would be based entirely on strength at the global events. So Korea could have 9 to Circuit's 7. Or the other way around (when pigs fly).

So Blizzard could keep the separation of regions meaning foreigners are represented at Blizzcon, but there would be a small countermeasure balancing things out ensuring the strongest players qualify. A bit of both.

The format should change first then, too little Koreans participated in the main event of this tournament to give it such an important role

For the event itself I would like to see it in the Dreamhack style where one game occupies the main stage for one entire day.

Great to have a final with 7 games after 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-2, 3-0, 3-0 and 3-0 in Ro12, quarters and semis.

And congrats to TY for the win! $200k is a damn fine prize in this tournament.

TY's road to $200k:

South Korea qualifiers:
Win vs BYE
Win 2-0 vs Rogue
Win 2-0 vs soO
Win 2-1 vs GuMiho
Win 3-0 vs INnoVation

Asia-Pacific Qualifiers:
Win 2-0 vs PSiArc
Win 2-0 vs aconcises
Win 2-0 vs SwEEt
Win 3-0 vs PiLiPiLi
Win 3-0 vs XY
Win 3-0 vs Maru

Main event:
Win 2-1 vs ShoWTimE
Win 2-0 vs Jim
Win 2-1 vs Cham
Win 2-0 vs PSiArc
Lose 0-2 vs Kelazhur
Win 3-0 vs Stephano
Win 3-0 vs Neeb
Win 4-3 vs Maru

Kelazhur was the only one to beat him and TY beat Maru twice. Winning the Korean qualifier was a big one, since that's where the hardest competition was found, evidenced by the two Koreans ending up in the final.

Thanks for the recap, his run is indeed very impressive :D.
Nice consolation prize for Kelazhur having been the only one to take a bo3+ off of him.

Nothing like their match on Daybreak in the IEM qualifiers. Lots of quick action, getting down and dirty in the early game and a whole bunch of doom drops. Pretty entertaining all in all but no big tank chess game.
