The players CAN SEE the countdown timer.
So no, polt did not see it as a lost, he was trying to force a draw which was what happened.

Well if you know it you just have to check your unit damage and the building health in order to guarantee the last hit.

Agreed, but obviously Strange didn't know that detail, and I wonder if even Polt knew that burning detail. Should not be such a niche detail that even progamers don't know about it
