I understand and can read it pretty much perfectly. I, like most Estonians, learned Finnish by watching Finnish tv. I basically grew up with Finnish tv, Writing is a bit iffy because I haven't written in Finnish in years. I can do it, but it takes a bit of time

On a side note, the Baltic states seem, at least to me, to be affiliated with their Scandinavian neighbours in the exact order they lie on the Baltic coast: Estonia-Finland, Latvia-Sweden, Lithuania-Denmark. Do you agree?

Estonia-Finland link is more or less correct. Latvia and Lithuania are leaning more to Russia actually.

Why is this you think, the are not quite part of the same language group as we have established. Is there a strong russian contingent in these small countries?

Yes, and they are not really welcome from what I've heard.

I advice you to study european history btw (or history in general really) to understand how these languages geographically spread

I have a fleeting understanding (for lack of better words) of European history. I am European just to be clear and I have "heard" there are a lot of Russians living in these baltic countries. Do they think of them selves as russians rather than Lithuania's or Latvians (or Estonians for that matter)?

Can't speak for all of them but I lived with a Lavian exchange student for a while and he thought of himself as Russian

Ok, but it would be a pity if these small countries lost their cultural heritage just because of russian immigration. I want Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to remain these small idiosyncratic countries with their own culture.
