Taeja vs Dark wasn't quite as good as I'd of hoped and Taeja lost -. -
Can't believe Zest almost lost to Hydra.
Life vs Bogus is about as evenly matched as it gets.

This tournament is super stacked and I'm sure we'll have plenty more good games. But when one player gets unlucky and another gets lucky and the difference in the result is thousands of dollars and hundreds of WCS points there is a problem. Whether or not you want to talk about it to preserve a "positive atmosphere" (or willful ignorance and complacency) is irrelevant. Sorry I'm "dropping the ball" by not ignoring an issue.

That's sort of how competitions work, one player wins big while the other screwed over to make things exciting.
I really don't think you need to worry about Life. He's doing great on prize money, he's not wearing an "I need a sponser" jersey, and he's almost got enough points to qualify for blizzcon already.

Swap Inno with anyone from the online qualifiers and you get a ridiculous first round matchup.
herO gets Inno? omg unfair!
Rain gets Inno? omg still unfair!
anyone gets inno? soooo unfair
whichever champion gets Inno (or any player deemed one of the best in the world) is a little unfortunate, but that's the fucking tournament. someone has to face him. get over it.

Yeah, I agree honestly. Among tournament formats, Bo5 single elim really isn't that bad. Surely nothing compared to the gsl format, but for a weekend tournament it does the job

Personally I blame you guys. After that awesome write up the other day everyone has like 12 players they want to see in the semi-finals, at least.

Just now watched Life vs. Innovation. Such an interesting match-up, and I felt like Life was on point. Really sorry to see him bomb out so quickly. I love watching Life play against top terrans these days, it makes for such tense and exciting games.

For what it's worth, here are what the seeds would have looked like if you used WCS points coming into the event (I used the Liquidpedia table, subtracting out the points that they've already earned for Katowice). In the case of a tie I just used alphabetical order, though you could use some other tiebreak if you wanted. herO drawing Taeja seems to the be most "unfair" first round matchup, though given the way Taeja played today that may be hard to say.
1. Life (2650) 2. herO (2525) 3. Maru (2200) 4. Rain (1225) 5. Innovation (950) 6. Dark (750) 7. Solar (700) 8. Fantasy (500) 9. Hydra (500) 10. Zest (375) 11. Bbyong (300) 12. Cure (300) 13. Patience (300) 14. Trap (300) 15. Taeja (150) 16. Flash (50)
1. Life. v 16. Flash 8. Fantasy v. 9. Hydra 5. Innovation v. 12. Cure 4. Rain v. 13. Patience 6. Dark v. 11. Bbyong 3. Maru v. 14. Trap 7. Solar v. 10. Zest 2. herO v. 15. Taeja

Bizarre about the whining about seeding the last few pages. Significant salt levels detected. The element of "luck of the draw" in tournament play has been around since the beginning of time, of course some people will end up having easier paths than others for the given tourney. This seeding system did make a lot of sense for IEM specifically, and I thought DarkLordOlli was explaining it best and perfectly rationally. I just find it odd this even became such a huge issue for some of you.
Before this matchup occured, you could argue Life was unlucky to draw Innovation, but then also, Innovation was a bit unlucky to draw Life. It just wasn't Life's day today... when you're on the top you have to bring your A-game every single time because all the other great players (along with their teams/coaches) will be studying you extra closely and have a giant target on your back. Awesome Bo5 in the end. And happy to see Zest come back after horrible recent times, and I thought Dark was insanely impressive in his demolition of Taeja... but I have to wonder how much of that might have been Taeja's suspect recent form?

whichever champion gets Inno (or any player deemed one of the best in the world) is a little unfortunate, but that's the fucking tournament. someone has to face him. get over it. Agreed. Additionally you can't do seeds based on your subjective appreciation of who's better than who. You need a clearly determined system to do that. Since IEM doesn't award "IEM points" the way WCS does, they had to use their own method of having no winner of an IEM vs his runner-up until the finals, and that's what was best.

This, and the fact that INno vs Life is just so cool to see, no matter if it's in ro16 or ro4, we just have to enjoy it, it's much better than if they just didn't meet at all...
And if Patience beats Maru, will it be unfair seeding too?

Life vs Inno was pretty good for the most part To be honest, I think TaeJa would have taken the series if he wasn't basically in retirement. His production didn't slip but he forgot to get upgrades at points, he had enough game sense to go into tanks for Dark's corruptor style but didn't find Dark's 4th in the last game until it was already over (although IMO Dark mindgamed that one a bit by not spreading creep in that direction) and he took several pretty bad engagements including lots of friendly fire from his own mines. I think he would have won if he still took SC2 as incredibly serious as he used to.
Rain vs Fantasy was one sided in that Rain got behind early in the first two games, did his darndest to defend/catch up but couldn't do it, and in game 3 Fantasy did the good old 11/11. With Zest vs hydra I agree there was a comedy of errors going on, but Zest's hold in game 5 was pretty marvelous.
