People have the wrong idea about what the WCG should be. It's the Olympics of Esports, not the World Championships. The difference here is that the Olympics is a cultural event first, competitive event second, whereas World Championships are mostly competitive. The Olympics aren't about the best X players in the world competing, it's the best Y players from each country competing, ideally with all countries represented. Obviously for an esports event, funding and sponsorships are highly limited for most countries and they can't all afford to send a player there, but the idea is there.
Skillwise, it's not WCS. But the importance of having this worldwide esports cultural event is undeniable.
tl;dr: it's not about taking a list of the best players in the world and having them compete, it's about a cultural exchange of the best players from as many countries as possible.

The WCG has gone downhill over the years, judging by the game selection and the number of countries represented. It's a damn shame, really.

will be easy for soulkey, parting, sora and jim to reach top4 unless they run into each other early on. and even then i'd expect the top3 to be out of those 4 ....

Honestly, the only good thing about WCG now is its theme song.

Didn't follow the selection progress. But nobody from either Belgium or The Netherlands is sad for a "world championship" or "the e-sport olympics".

Sad South Africa never got to participate

I actually like the model, just wish it's stock wasn't quite so low these days.
A hyped WCG tournament, without overlap to other tournaments would be fantastic if it was done well.

Curious who the casters will be Have you asked those countries if they wanted to participate? It's their responsibility to send forth competitors. It's not like WCG invites them, the countries are supposed to host qualifiers and send them. Why are people asking "why is my country not participating"? It's because your country decided not to participate....
Do you know how much it costs to buy a WCG license to host a qualifier? Without WCG direct support (aka: Samsung willing to sponsor a certain national qualifier) it's pretty impossible to run a qualifier, unless you're full of money ofc

Yeah, it's a bit of a pain.
Me and some of the boys wanted to try to host a WCG Ireland comp. The idea was to have an all-Ireland contest, and even of we had no chance in hell of sending people over to the finals, we'd at least have settled the best Irish player.
No however, you can't even do that with an army of people working on it for free (as we would have) because the license is pricey. Can't hope to recoup that for a tournament featuring only Irish players

Wow, WCG are even dumber than I thought, they spend all this money to host a big event and then they not only pay don't for qualifiers but actually demand the organizers of said qualifiers to pay for the privilege of hosting them? Mental.
