Icy Cup is a Two Day, 8 player invitational live tournament. Inspired by the style of Home Story cup, players and community members will gather at the luxurious eSports Canada studios for a double elimination tournament.
The Plan:
In order to fund this effort, eSports Canada has created an indiegogo.com fundraiser (which is like a KickStarter that allows friendly Canadians to use it) Our original goal was $650, but we've thankfully exceeded that due to an outpouring of support. Further donations will go towards increased prize pool, improvements in production, feeding players better, and possibly buying CombatEx a shirt with sleeves for once.
The Indiegogo campaign can be found at: Icy Cup 2013
Donations of any size are greatly appreciated and will help us grow this and other events in the future as well as directly support the participating players. eSports Canada is a non-profit organization.
Time and Location:
July 13th & 14th, Just outside the beautiful Toronto, Canada.
Henry "hendralisk" Zheng is a Canadian Zerg player who is currently playing for compLexity Gaming.
Henry is a mainstay in most Canadian tournaments. If he doesn’t win it outright, he is always hovering around the top.
Henry is a fierce competitor and his opponents know it. with practice partners like Scarlet, Major, and Kane, Henry has found many ways to take his game to the next level
If you look up Wasif “CombatEX” Kahn on Liquipedia you will only find these words: “CombatEX is a player.” with a link to a discussion about CombatEX’s past.
Known for BM he has tried to turn over a new leaf but the eSports community has been hard to change their opinions of him. Still you can't deny his abilities -- what other NA players have taken a game off of PartinG?
Maru "MaSa" Kim is a Canadian Terran player currently playing for ROOT Gaming.
Do you ROOT for ROOT!? With two Terran players in the tournament, MaSa may find many of the Terran faithful falling in love with his play. Besides, MaSa is always a strong player to root for.
Appearing in online and in-person tournaments as often as schooling will allow, MaSa can always be found deep in brackets and should never be taken lightly.
Casters will include ESC Jovian, ESC Songers, Hosted By Jon Quinn, with occassional guest casting by players and probably sarcastic interruptions by [UR]EnderSword
Top 10 Reasons you should watch:
10) Hockey is over 9) Canadian Players are very handsome 8) We will determine once and for all who the best Henry is 7) Not watching is the same as stabbing eSports in the face 6) StarCraft is fun to watch 5) I think we're getting one of them fancy giant cheques 4) You can play a drinking game based on how often we say 'sorry' and 'eh' 3) We'd totally watch your tournament 2) Turtle Doves 1) Canada is the Best SC2 Country in the world! (except for that other country which is objectively a bit better)
Can't wait to see everyone there and watch my wife bug them for interviews. I may do some random stuff myself.. and there will be Bacon.. take that as you will. See you soon my Canadian brethren!
For this first Icy Cup we decided to hold it with local Ontario players since we couldn't afford to transport people from far out. We had no idea we would get this much support and crowd funding! We will definitely be making this a tradition. We are working on ways to make it available to other locations in Canada as well as have online qualifiers instead of invite only. We are just so excited to hold this event and hope to give everyone a great show!
We got out of the blocks much faster than we expected, but would still like to make this bigger and better, so if you've got some money to donate towards a bigger prize pool and better tournament, please go for it, any amount big or small helps both make this time better and ensure we can keep trying more ambitious things in the future...like inviting french people.
Can you actually "attend" this event? Or just watch stream? Someone said something about attending and that would be cool :D. Otherwise excited to watch ;p

Like Home Story Cup is, this is actually just at Ken's house out in Pickering, So we're quite limited on space and so on.
We'll have a few players, volunteers and some esports media people there, but unfortunately can't have it open to the public to attend.
As of right now 5 are claimed and 5 of those remain, so that's an option if you live nearby and have the money to contribute. If not of course the stream will be on for most people to view. If this goes well it would be great to expand for our next project and get a bigger audience in etc..
It'd be awesome if someone decided to arrange a viewing party or something as well.
This is so awesome to be a part of and I think all the ESC people deserve some love for doing this, while working full time jobs, they do this shit out of their love for esports
look forward to this and I promise to be as Canadian as possible

JawesomeART just provided a concept drawing of the trophy he is making for the Icy Cup! Let him know how awesome it looks: http://i.imgur.com/BPfSFjs.jpg
Can I ask why you're closing the IndieGogo campaign before the event? I suspect you'd get more donations during the actual live event, especially if you are shouting out donors.

We wanted to know in advance what we'll be giving out in terms of mousepads, flags etc. As well we needed time to process transactions so we can pay our players on time.
This support is incredible! If you want to continue to help, make sure to tell your friends about the event. If we break some high numbers in views people will start to take more notice of Canadian eSports!

Go Go Canadian eSports!! Need more events in the GTA area :D NASL was a fucking blast!
I'm very, very sad I've yet to be able to make it out to a bar craft yet but it's always some horrible timing D: Next one I swear haha
And more on topic, this event looks sweet I'll defintely be watching online! Hope the numbers turn out great, judging by the indiegogo campaign it should be a good sucess!
Definitely try to make it for the Next BarCraft, and if you're into Dota 2 we're doing a pubstomp for that in August too.
Date getting close, there's like 30 hours left to Donate, we want to have this prize pool and stuff as high as possible, so if you're able, please do donate.

That makes sense. Thanks for the reply.
Since your original goal was to get $650, were you at all surprised to break the $2k mark?

I was hopeful we'd get to 2k, and I'm very happy we did. 2k was my kind of stretch goal when we put it up, but I wasn't sure we'd get there and I'm delighted we're now beyond.
The original $650 was largely symbolic because we know that's how much Take started out with for the HomeStory Cup, and that's our role model for this type of event.
I think we will try to put up some way for people to donate more during the event itself, but for the Indiegogo system, it wasn't feasible to do so we'll have to set something else up like a paypal link. We don't want to have the players waiting to get paid or anything.

Knowing these players as I do, I think this would be a Lethal dose for at least 6 of them, not to mention an illegal dose for 2 of them
Only a couple hours left to donate. i am absolutely floored at the community support. Guys we promise to make this show as incredible as it can be. We have had teams of people working on everything from the trophy to the assets to the players handling for weeks to months now. We are all taking this very seriously and are excited for this opportunity. We are honoured to represent your Canadian eSports Passion though this and future Icy Cups!

Well we were unsure we would hit $650 so getting to $2440 is really unbelievable.
Yeah there were a couple changes, Combat EX can no longer make it and so OneTrickPony will replace him and Believe also can no longer make it so he is being replaced by Moosy. Updates are here: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Icy_Cup
I would've preferred some sort of qualifying tournament, there are people in the area playing at a much higher level than some of these guys. Anyway GL~

Who in particular? We'd love to keep them on our list for future events.

These really are the ones who have been winning local tournaments we hold, I'm not really aware of any others around at a higher level of play.
But with that said, we hope to have enough success here to be able to expand it into both a wider region, and include qualifiers.

You should have asked around I would have loved to come =P
This thing is totally live now. MaSa vs OneTrickPony is on right now. Both players have been using drops, really looking forward to what we're going to see in game 2.
It was asked so I figured I'd make a poll for it. Only put the old generation pros on here. And Scarlett because it didn't feel right making a poll about Canadian starcraft without her.
Personally, I'd say Slush narrowly edged out Kiwikaki as being the Canadian king of special tactics. Though there's probably something to be said for Grrr... as well I would think.

No Testie?
I mean yeah, Grrrr wins easily, but I feel like Testie at least deserves a mention.
Sad that CombatEx couldnt play, but I am still impressed by the first ever Icy cup so far guys! and I'm stoked to see the future games and future Icy cups

Weird, they appear updated for me. Dunno what's up with that.
If you're logged in, you get to see updates even if they're not reviewed. However the fact remains that 11 changes are still pending, which presumably correspond to bracket updates.

Not sure why tub insists on sitting back and lets hendra take his side of the map when at one point he had a colossus/stalker/vr army versus roach and hydra. It's going to cost him the game. Knowing me I've spoken too soon though
i seen scarlett retweet someone about someone alt+tabbing during a game and getting a regame or something? didnt see it in thread , what was that all about?
Man, I love this tournament. I just get back to my buddy's place for this evenings pre drinking and we throw on the stream while cracking some beers and bam, I get a shout out for contributing to the prize pool. Got a big ass grin on right now, I'm not gonna lie.

Drunkenboi alt tabbed (hit the window button actually), asked for admins to resume from before the incident. Admins declined. Seemed like a fair Decision to me.
Day one was a blast and from what I am reading I think most people enjoyed it as well. Day 2 should bring more games and the same friendly atmosphere. We are working on fixing a couple of the production woes (namely one main camera dying on us) and hope to make Day 2 that much better.
Some of the players and production team are already awake and getting set up. We also have a few new special guests today so even more reason to tune in. If we break our record for viewers today...it will be a good day
