Its the other definition of upset (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/upset?s=t) the third definition applies here as "to set out of order". Things being in order would have been Life beating Sjow, but SjoW upset the brackets.

He could be playing for Joffrey Lannister and I would still cheer for him.

It is like a emotional negative state such as "surprisingly annoying " or just "unexpected occurrence with emotional - either positive or negative -implications like confusion"? In the context of a competition, an 'upset' is an unexpected result, so your latter definition is what you should look to. An upset would result in negative feelings for the fans of the favored competitor/team who lost, but surprisingly positive feelings for the fans of the winner. In general, there may be confusion about the result. EDIT: someone beat me to the answer. Oops.

In this instance talking of 'an upset' means a surprise result. Sort of like Tahiti beating Nigeria in Confederations Cup would be an upset! It is not referring to a negative emotions that may occur due to the result, but purely the result being unexpected.
