Koreans, mostly, do know varying degrees of English as it is a mandatory subject and many students take it as an extracurricular activity. However they feel a great sense of shame when speaking English in front of people and especially foreign people. It's a shame/pride dynamic and I think most TLers would be surprised at how much English Koreans know and understand.

We all think of these guys as super smart, but not a one can do an interview in English. Look at Dimaga, TLO and Stephano. They all had a different first language than English, but they all can also do English interviews without problem.

Japanese ? English ? I'd like to know.
