Was Babe Ruth the best baseball player of his time? Who knows? Latinos, Blacks, and Asians weren't playing in the league and the sport wasn't as popular and accepted as it is today. Athletes made very little money and there wasn't a big competition to become a pro baseball player. So sure, we can say Flash is the best Korean player, but can we say he's the best in the world? How many neurosurgeons, lawyers, scientists, or engineers have the skillset to be the best at the moment, but never even heard of Starcraft? The Korean scene is developed enough that you get a very high talent pool-- How many koreans do you hear say they would be lawyers or doctors if they weren't gaming. Compare that to the foreign scene where pro gaming isn't even known to exist to the majority of people, and your average foreign progamer was just a typical nerd in high school who happened to fall into pro gaming. Just as it was pointless to call someone the "best korean" SC2 player before KeSPA made it's switch, it's pointless to call anyone the best player in the world. SC2 isn't developed like Basketball, in which case saying Lebron James is the best player in the world is established and proven. If the talent pool is small being the best means nothing.

If the talent pool is small being the best means nothing. reasonable interpretation, but by that reasoning it's still fair to say that there is no "best korean" SC2 player now, and we'll never be able to crown one unless every korean starts playing SC2 full-time

Until SC2 becomes a major sport that nearly everyone in the world knows about and aspires to be good at if possible, then there still might be some hidden bonjwa somewhere out there. LeBron is probably the best basketball player in the world because everyone with decent athleticism will want to earn those millions. Starcraft isn't anywhere near that level, and the potential talent pool is infinitesimal compared to the world's population. And yeah that Babe Ruth example is good even though I hate baseball

724 votes for Jjakji to 8896 votes for Leenock. 12.2% votes for Jjakji, will be interesting to see how many people voted for Soulkey if he ends up winning.

This is a silly direction to take the argument. You could equally point out that basketball itself is only really a top tier sport in North America, and for the most part the best non-American athletes are likely to be funnelled into other sports. The "world's best basketballer" might actually be hiding out there disguised as a mediocre soccer player. On a tangent, there's a great statistic that's been proved in multiple sports and hemispheres that one of the best predictors of whether you'll be in professional sports is your date of birth. If you're born at the right time of year to be one of the older kids in your school year you're more likely to be a success against your peers, and thus more likely to be continually encouraged to improve. The degree to which the whole thing is nurture over nature is staggering.
