*KeeN defeats Nestea head to head and takes 3rd in the group in case Gom has a wild card group. It is possible but Gom hasn't decided according to Wolf and Khaldor. Maru and FanTaSy advance to Code S!
I know i said I wouldn't be able to make this thread and still made it, but I 100% cannot do Group D later tonight so I'd appreciate it if someone else made the thread and updated it. OP is premade HERE

probably the group with the most # of recommended games out of all Up and Downs groups. Today is the last day for SPL in WoL too. Lots of games to be played today :o

Really? I think HerO has a pretty good chance. HerO's PvT is pretty good and Nestea been slumping.
I'll say Fantasy + Hero, or Fanta + keen Fantasy hasnt even switched over to HoTS yet I think he's a lock. And he just broke his drought. Hero's still been playing WoL for SPL so he has a good chance Keen has one of the best mechanics out of all of them so he's a good choice.. I pretty much think Nestea will be lucky to be 3rd in this group

Look, I love protoss but hero tried teching to everything (besides stargate) AND take a third. He even had an Obs in maru's base and saw him pull his SCVs too. Greedy play is countered by an all-in such as that

Maru was the most greedy, taking even more tech earlier and they had the same amount of probe. Hero could not do anything at that point because he had to wait for storm, so taking his third was logical. Edit: And his cloaked banshee hardly killed a probe.

no he didnt even try. There were turrets up at every base before the mutas were even out
Considering how late it was and the fact that Nestea didn't have his lings at the third to pressure it (he had only one to scout on attack move so Fantasy got wind of it), Fantasy was so economically ahead I think infestors would have been a better choice. Fantasy was simply too prepared for mutas.

yeah Nestea was just way behind after that marine pressure. He lost 16 lings and 7 drones. his Lair didnt start until after 10 min. There was no chance for mutas to do anything unless Fantasy just went afk or forgot his ebay somehow, but even then his upgrades were ahead of Nestea so no chance of that happening
amazing that Fantasy's won 2 games already and maru only 1 and yet maru is still predicted over fantasy for 1st place...
I suppose Maru beat the other top contender whereas Fantasy "only" beat the two underdogs?
It might be because Fantasy lost a bunch of games recently (what was it 8 in a row in proleague and then 2-0d by Shine who had like a 1000 rating because he was like 1-8 in proleague) so Maru is just heavily favored over Fantasy and Fantasy's rating probably got tanked. Shine's rating will probably go up after last night's games though so it wont look like as bad of a loss
Really surprised Maru is ranked that high, and I knew Fantasy was doing poorly, but that's a bit of a shocker that he fell so low. Makes the current predictions make sense though.

20:00 +1 vehicle weapons started for Maru Maru moving around for another point of attack KeeN stims in and Maru sieges Maru kills all of the marines of KeeN Maru takes a 50 supply lead Maru sends another force into the 3rd of KeeN and kills the OC KeeN ggs! KeeN falls to 0-2 Maru wins and improves to 2-0!
Man that was a fun fun game, I agree with Khaldor turning point was KeeN's failed drop, but I was shocked how poorly he defended the banshees too, Maru played very well can't say a bad thing on it!

If you told me that this guy had won 3 GSLs, I would have laughed in your face. He's playing like he's on the brink of retirement right now. Iron Squid was his only decent showing in a long time.
This is not the real Nestea he is astrally traveling into the future to buff Zerg in HotS. His advanced AI is now playing HerO and while it is sophisticated it is not up to HerO's level but it is enough to cover Nestea's tracks however I see what you are doing Nestea!

I'm no pro, but I get the sense that this is a bit of a sloppy game - good number of things both players could have done better, both mechanically and strategically
ex - Nestea having no creep connection between bases early, missing the proxy probe, losing 4th to a single dt Hero - poor reaction to scouting spire not getting blink/pheonix range early enough
really like Nestea's dedication to air upgrades tho, he's up to 2-2 if I see properly will let him fight straight up with mutas, and helps with Broods later

Btw, that looked like a typical 2011 PvZ. Stargate into 2 base colossus vs hydras, then zerg goes to mass mutas, controls the map, threatening the base trade. Not bad at all :D

Not a bad way to end WoL PvZ(for me anyway). Muta base race, standard stuff. Better than a 40 minute GGLord WInfestor turtle fest. gg. Bad decisions on both sides though.

It's a change from the normal I guess, terribe for me but that's my least favourite stye to watch of ZvP historicaly. Mutalisks are retarded against Protoss to watch. There's none of the diceyness you get vs Marines, where you can't screw up or you'll get shredded. Mutaling ZvT is sexy though, ofc

1. No scout of Maru all in (Maru playing very well, of note). 2. Getting abused by mutas, largely due to slow blink and storm and some poor building placement.

I wouldn't be surprised if the team environment at EGTL is pretty bad right now. Stephano also played pretty poorly yesterday, and was only saved by the fact that his group was ridiculously easy

forgetting blink on stalkers is a common mistake. like, you know, sometimes, you're like, "this is the blink button," and instead you make another nexus next to mutas.
Dumping gas as he kept making phoenix without upgrading range, not getting a single HT when at 1.3k gas before his templar archive get sniped first time, not engaging perfectly vs IM "Baneling A Move" Nestea, Ya Hero deserve to be in code A

KeeN has played a strong game, he's not going to code S anyway.
the former dullard turned insightful commentator Wolf gives us a keen observation about the orbital command play by MVPKeen, the army positioning and overall strategy was enabled by this play and i for one owe him a debt of gratitude for pointing this out. WP keen.

For whatever reason, Nestea chooses the latter. I don't know why.
Seems like Nestea almost consciously avoided making infestors, which I think is quite questionable, especially when you can't make your mutas work. I mean, is it even worth it to build broods if you don't have infestors to support/defend them?
Nestea not getting ezpz group in up and downs anymore how he wished to have huk in this group hahaha so he can get away with his sloppy play...Why embarass yourself when already established yourself in the sc2 scene and earned respect throughout eSF...just be a team manager or coach like Boxer

Yeah dude, if I were an older fringe Code S player, I would totally quit too....
Inc Nestea collapse 20 baneling into a thor again and donate hive units...Maru is not the kind of player to let you get away with that so i guess he is basically out already

If hero wins both his games and maru wins, maru and hero advance. If hero wins both and maru loses. Maru and fantasy advance. Like in any other case right?

EG-TL situation is so bad, it has the moral at an all time low in the house, The players are playing terrible. Even stephano isnt looking as impressive anymore, Look at HERO, looked god awful today..
Shine is the Jackie Robinson for KeSPA players. No KeSPA players made it through Up&Downs, until Shine broke down that barrier! And the very next night, Fanta comes through too! Looking forward to celebrating March 3rd, 2014 as "Shine Day."

Hero does not have a spectacular PvZ history.
He was at one point one of the most notable PvZ specialists, gradualy fell off though of course.

It's pretty funny, Fantasy used it against Keen, then Maru used it against Fantasy.
Fantasy's first 2 games were both proxy 2 raxes against Keen and Nestea, and he won both games. Maru also proxy 2 raxed Fantasy, and attempted to do so to Nestea but cancelled upon seeing gas.

He'll be 3rd in the group, so if there is a final spot to be filled, the 3rd place winners from the U and D groups play for that seed, so there is still a very slim chance Keen makes it.

While foreigners haven't exactly done extremely well, "annihilated" isn't the word I would use to describe 2011 Huk and Jinro, 2012 Naniwa, and currently as yet to be seen Stephano (3rd place in Ro32 - remember that would have been enough to keep him in code S in 2011 iirc)

If Scarlett somehow manages a Code S seed, it would have definitely been a crazy year for her, going from NA unknown to Code S player within 12 months.
There is a pretty big difference between GSL and MLG events in terms of difficulty, I think she would be annihilated just like every single foreigner so far
Especially since she excels at broodlord and Infestor control and seems super high level in ZvZ. Those seems to be skills that are less useful with HotS, atleast at the start.

Way more foreigners have tried the GSL they just always lost in the qualifiers or if they got a seed in the first or second round of Code A and then left Korea. Select, Ret, Haypro, TLO, Mana, Sen, Moonglade, Sheth, Sase, Fenix, Thorzain, sjow. Probably some more especially counting the qualifiers. All of those players got Code A or Code S seeds at some point.

Well, if he's going to say "every single foreigner so far", it makes sense to include every single foreigner's results so far. In which case past results are certainly relevant. But either way, past results still certainly count. Nestea hasn't been any more impressive than Naniwa in the GSL in the past year (actually less so if I'm not mistaken?) but who would knock on Nestea's accomplishments (all of which were mostly achieved in 2011). MMA has also been very meh lately, but he's still very well liked and respected, and people had expected him to do well in GSTL. Past accomplishments have always been notable. A random masters player could probably beat Fruitdealer if he played a game of SC2, but that doesn't make his win worthless.

Stephano is already in code S? So I assume that they can't seed him again.
Edit: To add to the point about past results, Boxer would get annihilated in the GSL (when was his last relevant GSL result?) But that doesn't mean he would ALWAYS have been annihilated, like every GSL attempt of his so far or something. In the past, he was certainly still pretty good. Saying that every single foreigner has been annihilated so far doesn't really make any sense.

I really feel like this might be the end for HerO as a top player. He's been playing nothing but embarrassing games ever since his hot streak, and he's such an emotional player that I feel like he's rapidly spiraling into a place he can never return from.
You can say that HotS will be a new game, but it's not as if WoL is what's holding him back. His problem is psychological, he's not going to magically regain his confidence with the new expansion.

I love parallels, even if they're really badly drawn. Sure, you can easily argue off of this that terran has "so much more to do" vs zerg, but zerg is always more of a strategic race, especially when you look at zergs who are really meticulous with their engagements (DRG, stephano) versus those who don't. Just my thoughts at least.

I doubt it. Being on Liquid means that he'll be attending plenty of tournaments, and he's bound to get a decent result sometime, considering that most Kespa players won't leave Korea ever except for maybe MLG, and most Korean teams can't afford to send players abroad that often.

You can't micro Vikings unless you're pulling them back from stalkers or trying to kiting against Battlecruisers (like 1 in a 100 TvTs get that far..), same as a BL. I think its laughable to say that there's such thing as BL micro when all you do is pre-split, the same way I find it funny when people try to say "viking micro"

This isn't a few games, this is a huge streak not only for the EG-TL in the proleague but also for individual play.

If Scarlett somehow manages a Code S seed, it would have definitely been a crazy year for her, going from NA unknown to Code S player within 12 months.
There is a pretty big difference between GSL and MLG events in terms of difficulty, I think she would be annihilated just like every single foreigner so far
No foreigner did win GSL so far, but many didnt get annihilated, especially Jinro, Idra, Huk, Naniwa and Stephano.
Aren't those all the foreigners that have been in GSL? And can we please use recent results for a change, Jinro, Idra, Naniwa haven't been in GSL for months. HuK's ro8 days are long past.
If someone claims "annihilated just like every single foreigner so far" we can`t only use recent results, no. Please follow the discussion.
And they have been many more foreigners in GSL: Ret, Sase, Mana, Grubby, Haypro, Thorzain, ...
Remember Torch and Artosis back in the open seasons?
Still remember Torch going for BCs in one game against another Terran (was it Virus?). Hilarious. The game was on Metalopolis iirc.

Lol, every thread, it's a joke.
PL threads were the worst though. Those like me were excited to see the Kespa guys, the novelty, as we'd missed it in BW. But no, instead of having cool discussions and getting psyched up about a prestigious tourney, every thread is just bitching about EGTL, their managers, their players with 93% of it based on nothing other than conjecture

Thank god they don't do seeds anymore...

They made sense at the time, given that a hell of a lot of Kespa players were either unknown or mediocre, with quite a few bombing in the GSl, or being average at best with a few exceptions. The training regimes are of course well-known, but equally it wasn't ridicuous to take the Kespa work ethic as being there, but come to the conclusion that it hadn't yet started paying off.

Didn't see all the games granted. HerO plays a kind of high-risk, high-reward style a lot of the time, relying on his multitasking and whatnot more than other Protoss players. When it fails he still often looks 'good' but fragile, it's a natural consequence of the style. Gumiho is the best example, his multitasking is insane and glorious to watch, even when it fails you don't think 'Gumiho's a scrub'. At least if you're me!
Players like Killer are sooo boring and cookie cutter that I don't know, you just go 'meh' when they lose. Tbh I was surprised to see Killer in U+D given he had looked to be falling over for quite a while.

I dont mind - if they want to play in the GSL - go there and play. Recieving seeds, then going last place in your group and dropping from GSL is not really nice addition.
HerO is mentally done I am so sad watching him. He was crying before the beginning of that game I mean thats bad.
Honestly, we all should be rallying around him and cheer for HerO win or lose and keep his spirits up, or else where is he going to find the strength to continue, it is us who need to be his light and his brothers in TeamLiquid.
I am praying for you HerO please find strength wherever you can and stop crying I can't stand it anymore. T_T
Hate to say this but NO TEARS; ONLY DREAMS ok? Please! <3

There is a clear difference, Korean fans are much harsher online. TL is too polite to be a normal internet forum even in foreigner's standard.
TL is polite because it's one of the few heavily moderated gaming sites of this size. I don't get how you can say Korean's are much harsher if you read any other site that don't have TL's high standards. TL was much worse when sc2 first launched as well, time having weeded out some.

LOL thank god they don't do seeds anymore. I suppose Stephano is the only one recently who actually deserved his seed, all the other foreigners dropped, with good reason.
are we just sticking to this thread for Group D too? I don't imagine there'll be much chatter, my 2 monitors are taken by the stream and the 2 IEM streams lol
edit: anyone can make the thread for group D it's premade in the resources thread, if you're going to watch just make it. you just have to update results.

Serious or not it is slowly happening though. More and more KeSPA getting into Code A/S each season. Also the very high possibility of last WOL championship going to KeSPA.

game 1> Many persons here said he was trying to tech to colossus and storm. He had actually already 2 colossi so he wasn't trying to tech to it, it was already done. Taking a 3rd and storm at the same time is pretty standard, unless your opponent goes allin which was the case (and Hero scouted a part of Maru's army when it was leaving to push). But even if HerO doesn't take the third, I don't see a toss defending such a strong push without storm anyway. What should he do with these minerals ? He would have had a few more zealots ? Or should have he built some canons ? Now he would have delayed the attack another 15 seconds and storm was done so too bad for him.

Very well played by Fantasy. So glad to see him in Code S together with Flash. A final between the two would be a dream come true. Will probably have to wait a while longer until that happens, but you can always hope.

Two Protoss in Ro8 of the current GSL. That's just as many as Terran.
sOs is the best player in PL. 4 of the top 10 players in PL are protoss.
It's been longer since a Terran won GSL than Protoss.
Protoss has never been a super dominant race like Zerg currently is or Terran once was.
Protoss has almost never to my recollection had a player who is legitimately good at all 3 matchups simultaneously. I mean Rain did seem to achieve that when he was first on the scene, and came close to 'figuring out' PvP. The matchups never seem to have stabilised until the end, and when they eventually did, ZvP's end state was just sickening to watch from both sides. The stats may never have beared this out as much as the instinctive 'feel' that 'Wow, Protoss is functionally retarded in this game.
Equally they can get pretty good results and make good runs, at any time really bar the 1/1/1 era, so the race still 'wins things'
The reason many Protoss players love HerO is because of his style. We don't want Protoss to just win, we want them to win in a non-retarded way. Parting's PvZ is a case in point, pretty bad/average until he discovered ONE allin that was ridiculously potent, and he can ride on its coat-tails to win. Parting's Pvz is possibly the most overrated single matchup in the history of SC since I can recall watching.
This is not a bash at Parting, indeed his Pvt style was so beloved precisely because it was awesome to watch, nuanced and interesting to watch.
To be fair that's actually pretty accurate. I've been rather inactive and the last matches I saw Creator play were pretty terrible, but yeah he is just all-round solid. Still reliant on dumb timing-attack-or-die vs Zerg, but agreed.

Nice fail. Switch has been a whole year now. Players should be even and the results are leaning that way.
bad try. full transition to sc2 in proleague only started december last year, while the hybrid started around may last year. did you even see these guys play at the mlg kespa invitational which was june of last year? they were chobos. how is 9 months of valid sc2 experience (at most. and i'm being generous here since hyrbid proleague was iffy as they had to practice for broodwar as well) equal to around 3 years of sc2 experience for the non-kespa players? the kespa players are performing way better than their sc2 experience suggests, especially compared to the non-kespa players.
^ sure. but that is definitely not equal to 3 years of experience, which was my point.
imagine this flipped table scenario for a bit. it's the kespa guys who have 3 years experience, and the newcomers with 9 months of experience are the non-kespa players. what do you think the outcome of the current gsl will be? the way that scenario plays in my mind is that non-kespa players wouldn't stand a chance, just like in broodwar. of course we will never truly know, but it's not hard to imagine it turning out that way and that says something.
^ good for you. my interest here is to objectively dissect and understand this situation with the kespa players. i happen to be a fan of mvp, among other things, who is an esf player.

if the newcomers were as skilled as the esf players it would be the same as it is now. 3 years of experience doesn't matter when the metagame and balance has changed so much over those 3 years.
the kespa players started playing when the game was pretty much figured out and there were only minor balance changes. they learned everything about sc2 from the esf players.

I would say most of the reason for that is the team environment and strict practice schedule. Also, Kespa players understand better how to evaluate and fix holes in their play. This definitely gives them an advantage, but not an insurmountable one. If the situation were reversed, and the ESF guys were just now transitioning from BW, as long as they had the desire I still think they'd put up respectable numbers because they'd be working harder in order to catch up. Experience has diminishing returns, anyway.

i disagree. the difference between very refined play is huge compared to just good play. it wins you games. you get this from experience through constant practice and trial and error. it takes a lot of time and dedication. about the game being fully figured out, that's just conjecture. the sad fact is that we will never know for sure because the transition to hots is coming very soon. we won't be seeing people like flash potentially truly pioneer how terran is played in wol, for example, which he did in broodwar.

i agree with training regimen and better evaluation of their play, but i wouldn't count out the fact that kespa has the cream of the crop talent pool. a lot of the esf players were former broodwar players who couldn't make it in broodwar in spite of undergoing the same training regimen. i wouldn't really argue this strongly though because there are a lot of other factors involved in success in sc2.
true, experience has diminishing returns but considering that kespa has only 9 months under their belt, i would say experience is still a huge factor at this point. 9 months isn't enough to fully develop one's potential. again using flash as an example, he has just started training his harrassment style going into his code a matches as he stated in his interview. i don't think he's even near his full potential in sc2 yet.
I kind of view some of the ESF folks who were formerly in Kespa houses as not necessarily being less talented than many of their Kespa counterparts.
Perhaps not every Korean actually benefits from that practice regime, and could flourish in a less regimented environment. I mean there are massive differences in practice schedules within the foreign scene, coexisting withthe idea that Koreans are all the same and all practice 10-12 hours a day, and benefit equally

Are you high? Given 7 or so months only MVP and a handful of the other ex-A-teamers with the necessary mechanics would be competitive. You're severely underestimating how demanding it was to learn and play BW at the highest level. Flash and co. would run rings around the Zergbongs of ESF.

First SC2 was going to be return of the foreign scene, which we all know how that turned out.
Then EG-TL considered being favourites in proleague. I don't know what the excuses are for their results but there are probably a number of them.
Then of course the great talent of Stephano in GSL. Well he probably wasn't lucky with the map pool or something.
Now Kespa A-teamers are catching up and in a couple of months they will just wave goodbye to the rest of the field.
I will be back for the new excuses then

Yeah but you're in no point objective, because you're presupposing two entities "an esf player" and "a kespa player", which make no sense when looking at actual results. Sola is no Effort, and Virus is no Mvp. Just the same as Avenge is no Rain and Trust is no Squirtle.

false. kespa and esf are two different entities with different training philosophies and regimens. it's quite natural to compare them actually based on the results of their players playing the same game. what i am obviously after is analyzing and understanding what is/are really behind kespa's success as a whole in sc2 in light of their still limited experience (in terms of time spent playing the game vs esf) in sc2, not results of individual players.
Yeah but no, like I said the results prove you wrong, given that provided the same limited experience a player can be as successful as RorO or as unsuccessful as those B-teamers we don't even know the nick of. A player's result depend too much on his personal skill, multitasking, resistance to nerves, and commitment, to analyze this in an environmental-only fashion like you're trying to. Obviously it's a factor. But it's not the only one, and honestly I doubt it's even the most important one.
Also, I'd like to add that besides thinking that you're wrong, I still don't see why we should care even if you were right.
^ who said i'm taking training environment as the only factor in their success? a lot of factors determine success in sc2, like i said in my reply to a different poster above. read it before you put words in my mouth. if you don't get what i'm trying to do, then i don't know what to say to you. i will just say that it involves basic principles of regression analysis. make of that what you will.

Well if "only" is the key word you didn't say it was the only one, that's true, but the rest of the factors aren't kespa or esf dependant so the only real reason to view them as two separate / opposite entities is their training regimens.
